the bgates.exe still there. Thank you.
Hi Misty, :D

What you have is a Sony Rootkit, it was installed without your knowledge when you put in a Sony Music CD, it s there form of Music Copy Protection and is causing havoc on most computers that it was installed on. I understand there is a class action suite againt Sony for this and they quit including this in there newer CDs. It can be a stickler to remove. A rootkit uses stealth technoligy and goes undected. From what I understand, the latest version or Microsofts Windows Defender has the capabilities of removing this pest.

You can download it here.
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/s…re/default.mspx

After you download, install and run the program, post back with a new HJT log, just a few minor things to fix, nothing earth shattering.

Ken :D
Hi Ken, I've installed windows defender and scanned it, didn't find anything. Just downloaded symantec, can't find Rynknos. And still getting those messages virus found. Please help. Thanks.
Misty,

Added by the Sony/XCP DRM security software. This service is part of the digital rights management system utilized on certain Sony CDs. If you remove this service, you may no longer be able to play certain CDs from Sony on your computer.

If you have this service, then there is a good chance you also have the Sony XPC DRM rootkit.

Misty,

Outside of the Sony problem, your log looks ok. I need to do somemore reading on this matter before I offer any advice on it. I will get back to you tomorrow.

This is what we are up against,
C:\WINDOWS\system32\$sys$filesystem\$sys$DRMServer.exe

O23 - Service: Plug and Play Device Manager ($sys$DRMServer) - First 4 Internet Ltd - C:\WINDOWS\system32\$sys$filesystem\$sys$DRMServer.exe

Do not delete these, its going to take more than that, it could damage your system if done wrong.

This is from a program we run called Rootkit Revealer for other Rootkits that was run on a pc with the Sony Rootkit.

But the most disturbing part of the tale came when Russinovich ran his standard rootkit-removal tool on the post-Sony PC.

"Users that stumble across the cloaked files with a RKR scan will cripple their computer if they attempt the obvious step of deleting the cloaked files," he writes.

Sony also has an uninstaller , its at the bottom of the page. You can give it a try. I understand it works.
http://cp.sonybmg.com/xcp/english/updates.html

I dont need the Ewido log.

How are things running now since we got rid of that other bad file??
Misty,

After further research and some feedback from the people that are experts at this, this is the conclusion.

The fact that the O23 - Service: Plug and Play Device Manager ($sys$DRMServer) - First 4 Internet Ltd - C:\WINDOWS\system32\$sys$filesystem\$sys$DRMServer.exe service is showing means that the rootkit is no longer active. The rootkit hides all files and services that start with $sys$. Since these are visible its not active and its fine to leave it installed.

So it looks like you are ok :thumbup:

Hoe are things running now??
looks like everything is good now. I'm just wondering how did I get bgates.exe? my kids went to runescape and myscape, is there any website you now for us to avoid? Anyway thanks a bunch, you've saved my 2 computers. God bless!
Hi Misty,

I don't see bgates.exe on your log file anywhere. What exactly is it doing, I need your help with info on this so we can work on a solution.

Try installing both Ad Ware and Spybot and run the scans. Paste the reports into this thread for me to look at.

Ad Aware may be quite large and may need two posts

Please use the links in my signature to download and install both of the following free programs.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4

* If you have the older version 1.3, remove it via ADD-REMOVE PROGRAMS in the Control Panel.

Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Add-Remove Programs scroll to that program and click on Remove.

* During Installation, just follow all the defaults.
* Go to Mode and click on Advanced Mode
* Then to Updates Search for Updates
* If you get a Bad Checksum Error, just choose a different download location.
* Then to Settings/ File Sets and take the checkmark out of Usage Tracks
* Then to Tools/ Hosts Files click on Add Spybot S&D Hosts Files.
* Then to Tools/ IE Tweeks and put a checkmark in Lock the Hosts Files
* Then to Immunize. Up at the top by the GREEN SIGN, click on Immunize.
* Then to Search and Destroy/ Check for Problems
* Let it scan your system
* Then to Fix Problems and fix all it finds.

RE-BOOT your computer.

AD-AWARE SE PERSONAL 1.06

If you have an older version of Ad-Aware, no need to uninstall it, it will prompt you to uninstall it during
the set up process

* During installation, follow all the defaults.
* Start the program and Check for Updates
* Choose Perform a Full System Scan
* Take the checkmark out of Search for Negligable Files
* Run the scan
* When it is done, Right Click on One of the Entries/ Select All/ Next and let it remove all that if finds.
Misty,

Who knows where this stuff comes from, you have to be so careful what you download, email attachments and the list goes on. You mentioned you had kids and they are big on games and downloading games from unknown sites is a big risk.

It looks like your good to go, see nothing bad in your log. :thumbup:

Here are some free programs and tips for keeping your system up to date, and to help keep all the riff raff out of your system.

Be sure to follow the instructions for System Restore because everything we removed is backed up in that program and if you ever use it to revert your system to an earlier date, you can reinfect your self all over again.

Download and Install CCleaner
* Click on Run Cleaner
* Run the Issues Scan < When it asks you to backup the Registry..Say Yes
Tutorial for CCleaner

Now that your clean, we need to erase all possible older infected files that may still be lurking on your system.
* Clean out your TEMP FILES
* This procedure should be run from SAFEMODE for better results.

To Enter SAFEMODE

* Go to START/ SHUT OF YOUR COMPUTER/ RESTART
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu.
* Use the UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the ENTER KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD

* Go to My Computer/ C: Drive/ Documents and Settings/ Every User on this Computer Local Settings
and delete all the contents of the Temp Folder and the Temporary Internet Files Folder <–Just the contents, not the folder itself.

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Temp and delete all the contents of the Temp Folder <– But not the temp folder itself.

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Prefetch and remove all the contents of the Prefetch Folder. <–But not the Prefetch folder itself.

NOW RE-BOOT NORMALLY

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
* When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now Empty your Recycle Bin

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your
system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

* IE- Spyad IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains
in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed,
although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

* Firefox Browser
It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use
