Hi.
I have a problem that occurs when I try to download documents such as application forms.
When selecting "download document" there is a double click sound and then a window - "Windows Internet Explorer has encountered a problem". The error report says there is no solution to the problem.
I have gone through your "before submitting Highjack This Log" process and still have the problem.
I've got AVG antivirus + firewall, Spybot, AdAware and SpywareBlaster.
Would appreciate any assistance.
Thanks

Hello PaulGeraghty and Welcome to TomCoyote,

Please tell me are the application forms pdf documents? Are you just experiencing this problem with pdf documents?

Also I notice ewido cleaning the FakeAlert, etc. Please do the following and let's check to see if everything was taken care off.

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

[external image: Posted Image]

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter

[external image: Posted Image]

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Please post:
C:\rapport.txt
Hello Susan 528. Thank you for your help. Yes, it seems to be just a problem with pdf. Here is the results from SmitFraudFix. Let's finish with cleaning up the FakeAlert junk. The ewido scan is important in this fix sequence, so please do it again when asked. We will get back to the pdf problem.

Clean

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.

[external image: Posted Image]

The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Hello PaulGeraghty,

I was not sure whether ewido would find anything or not. Looks like the Smitfraud or FakeAlert junk has been eliminated.

I noticed your hijackthis version is out of date! Please use this link and download the newest version and post(reply) with a current hijackthis log. You will see Download Hijackthis button in the left margin.

Hi Paul,

There are Just a couple of files that need to be fixed and then we will look at the pdf problem.

Disable SpywareGuard:
You have SpywareGuard installed. While this is a great program, we need to temporarily disable (not uninstall) the program because it might stop our fix.
  • Right click the running icon ofSpywareGuard, it will open the program.
  • Then go to Menu, file, exit.
  • Then confirm the program is closed.
Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm

Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable SpywareGuard again.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.
Hi Susan 528

Have done as instructed and have now enabled SpywareGuard again.
Below is latest Hjt scan. Thanks

Hi Paul,

Please try this tip for pdf documents. Let me know if this helps:

Tip - Instead of opening the file in your browser, try right-clicking on the link and selecting Save Target As (in Internet Explorer) or Save Link As (in Netscape), and downloading the file directly to your hard drive (just pick a file, or save it directly to your desktop). While it's downloading, you can continue to use your browser, and after it's downloaded you can just double-click on the file to open it in Acrobat. Generally, printing from the downloaded file is also easier.

Hi Susan. Thanks for the tip. I have tried saving a pdf document with "save target as" and it works. I can then open it from my desktop. Thanks for all your help. You're doing a great job!
Hello Paul,

Glad the tip helped. Your logs appear to be clean. Please be sure and update your Java with the instructions below:

STEP 1.
======
DON’T BECOME OVERCONFIDENT WITH ANTIVIRUS APPLICATIONS INSTALLED!!!

http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic….39eba6ea0b5e8ee

Stay up to date on security patches and be extremely wary of clicking on links and attachments that arrive unbidden in instant messages and e-mail.

"The number one thing the majority of the malicious code we're seeing now does is disable or delete anti-virus and other security software," Dunham said. "In a lot of cases, once the user clicks on that attachment, it's already too late."

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Updates regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
