folks,

no noticeable problems but I thought I'd post to see if there's something lurking. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum :wavey:

Before we do anything, tell me if this file is present on your machine:

C:\Windows\System32\userinit.exe
No "C:\Windows\System32\userinit.exe" on my machine. I take it that is good? there is user.exe, user32.dll and userenv.dll at the above path.
No. It's bad. :(

But you can recover.

Copy from:

C:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\userinit.exe

to:

C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe

The "problem" is this:

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wsaupdater.exe,

If we just remove it without C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe being present you won't be able to log in.

Let me know if you were able to find/copy as suggested.
:)
ah, that sounds familiar now. I did make that change following someone's counsel when I got the "blue screen of death" after I ran some command to fix Windows Defender's updating problems. I'm EXTREMELY wary to go down that path again given that Defender currently works and I haven't seen the BSOD since I did the wsaupdater.exe thing. So I take it that it is difficult to see any issues on my machine without making that change? I really appreciate your help and WILL do the switch that you describe, but I wanted to write and clarify to get reassurance from you if that context would change your thinking….Thanks! :)
