Hi,

For the last month or so, when I reboot my computer, every other time or so, I get a warning from my Norton Firewall 2005 that an attack has been blocked using the Bla Trojan rule. The following is the text from the Norton log:

Rule "Default Block Bla Trojan horse" blocked (COMP-TUMKUR(192.168.1.3),1042).
Inbound UDP packet.
Local address,service is (localhost,1042).
Remote address,service is (COMP-TUMKUR(192.168.1.3),1042).
Process name is "N/A".

So, it seems to originate from my machine itself. I have done some searching using Google and I have found a few pages that report this. But I haven't found any definite resolution.

Also, it was a month ago or so, that I installed a new GeForce 6200 graphics card upgrading from integrated graphics. A week ago, I had problems with my new graphics card and so removed it and went back to integrated graphics card. For the one week that I used the integrated graphics, I did not get a single warning. Two days ago, I got a new card from the manufacturer and during one of the reboots during installation, got the same warning again. I am also talking to the card manufacturer PNY, to see if they can tell me anything about this.

My computer sits behind a router. I have scanned with Spyware Blaster, Spybot S&D, Adaware and I also have Windows Defender Beta which runs every night. In addition, I have AVG anti-virus which updates almost daily and runs a full scan daily. I also have WinPatrol which monitors startup processes.

I am attaching the HijackThis log below. I would appreciate if someone could help me understand if this is a real problem or if it is something genuine getting blocked by the firewall since it is characteristic of the Bla Trojan.

Thanks very much.

-Raghu

Welcome to Tom Coyote, sorry for the delay in responding.

Your log looks clean, dont see any malware or viruses on it. A couple of problems that I see are that you are running ( TWO ) Anti Virus Programs, not a good idea as they will conflict sometimes and can give you false positives. I suggest since you most likely purchased Norton that you uninstall AVG Free.

Norton suggestes that you update the definition files and run the scan to remove Bla Trojan if its present. Let me know if it found and removed it.

Lets run the trial of Ewido, if something is hidding from us this may uncover it.

Download and install the 30 day trial of Ewido Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.

* Once you have downloaded Ewido Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
* Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
* On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
* Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
* Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
* Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine
* Under Reports
* Select Automatically generate report after every scan
* Un-Select Only if threats were found
* Close Ewido Anti-Spyware <– Do not run the scan yet.

Boot your computer into Safemode

* Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
* Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the Enter on your Keyboard

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:

* Lauch Ewido-Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
* Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
* Ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
* Once the scan is complete do the following:
* If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
* Next select the Reports icon at the top.
* Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
*** make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
* Close Ewido and post the report and a new HJT log please.

Ken,

Thanks so much for replying. I don't know what in the log says that I have 2 anti-virus programs running. I don't think I do. I have never installed Norton AV on my system. I only have AVG anti-virus. I have the Norton Firewall, Norton Ghost and Norton Partition Magic on my system. AVG updates regularly and runs a full scan every morning.

I have followed your instructions and ran Ewido in safe mode. Below is the Ewido report:

————–End HJT log———————————–

Basically Ewido found only some tracking cookies that Adaware and Spybot S&D missed, I guess. Please let me know what you think. Once again, thanks for your help.

raguru :D

I am also attaching a new HJT log. I assumed you did not want the HJT log when I was in safe mode. So, I exited safe mode, logged in normally and then ran HJT. Below is the log:

Yep, we always need to see the log in normal mode, safemode wont show everything. :thumbup:

Disable the TeaTimer in Spybot just temporarally, open Spybot and go to Mode> Advanced Mode> Tools> > Resident and take the checkmark out of TeaTimer

Open HJT Scan Only and with all windows and your browser closed, fix this entry.

O16 - DPF: {3AF4DACE-36ED-42EF-9DFC-ADC34DA30CFF} (PatchInstaller.Installer) - file://E:\content\include\XPPatchInstaller.CAB

You have AVG Free and Symantec Security Suite installed and the security suite contains an Anti Virus program unless you did not install it.

The rest of your log looks good :thumbup: Ewido found cookies but also the Weatherbug program which tends to bring some spyware along with it. You would be better off uninstalling that program from the Add-Remove programs in the Control Panel and using one that is more reliable and spyware free from the Weather Channel.

You can run this safe system cleaner to get all the nooks and cranies cleaned out like your temp files and such.

This will by default install the Yahoo Toolbar, you can remove it via the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel if you wish.

Ken, Thanks again for looking at the log and writing back.

I checked in the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs and I cannot find Symantec Security Suite. I definitely do not have NAV because there is nothing in my system tray that shows any icons for NAV. I also do not have Weatherbug. At one point I had tried to install the Weather Channel one along with Real Player and somehow that installation did not work correctly. I tried to remove it, but was unable to do it from the Control Panel Add/Remove programs.

I have removed the XPPatchInstaller.CAB entry that you asked me to remove using HJT. What was it, by the way?

I have downloaded CCleaner and I did run it. I was able to recover about 44Megs of hard disk space. I still have not dealt with the "Issues" part of CCleaner because I was not sure about some of the entries in it. But the machine is running fine. I have not had a "Bla Trojan Rule" warning since 07/30/2006. I still don't know what caused it.

When looking under "Tools" section of CCleaner, it showed the Symantec Security Suite, Anti-Spam, etc. As I said, I have never installed those and have never seen it in action either.

I would appreciate any other tools you recommend. Should I keep the Ewido software after the trial expires?

Thanks again for your help.

-Raghu
Ewido is a great program, after the trial you can still check for updates, run scans and remove what it finds, you will just lose the background guard feature , so your call to remove it or not.

Any of the 016 entries can be removed, you will just be prompted to download them again when you visit the site.

Open HJT> Open the Misc Tools Section > Open Uninstall Manager> Save List , it will open in Notepad, paste it into this thread.

This is your call what to remove, I don't know the status or Norton, whether it was a trial on a new PC that expired, or if you purchased it, if it is out of date and whether you want to keep it. If you keep Norton, then you need to remove AVG Free via the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Here are all the listings for Norton. Ken,

I understand. :( I have to remove NIS using HJT or CCleaner since Control Panel Add/Remove does not show it! I am hoping that by removing NIS, the Norton Personal Firewall won't be affected since I want to keep that. I have a shrink-wrapped NIS sitting here since I got it for a very good price but did not install after hearing about the bloatedness of NIS and the general lack of effectiveness of I-can-do-all software suites.

Its a total mystery to me since this was a PC I put together and hence no software came with it.

I will keep Ewido after the trial since you said it would still provide some amount of functionality.

Thanks once again.

I would suggest posting in our other forum for other computer problems, they are more suited to help you unravel this.

Ken,

Thanks for the links. I shall try to find out why I have a piece of software that I did not install. Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it.

When you get it all sorted out, you can look this over.

Here are some free programs and tips for keeping your system up to date, and to help keep all the riff raff out of your system.

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your
system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* ClickProperties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember, You will have to be in Catagory View to see this

Download and Install CCleaner
* Click on Run Cleaner
Tutorial for CCleaner

* Go to C:\windows\prefetch and delete all thats in that folder, but not the prefetch folder itself, you should be in Safemode to remove it all.

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
* When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now Empty your Recycle Bin

* Make sure that your ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE is up to date and run a full scan at least once aweek.

* Here are Free Anti-Virus Programs if you need one
AVG Free Edition
AntVir Personal Edition

* Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.

* Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

* Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and
give you the option to deny the change.

* IE- Spyad IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents downloads and (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

* Firefox Browser
It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both. When it asks you if you want it to be your default browser, say NO and take the checkmark out of the box to ask you again. After you use this for awhile, you will want to make it your default.

* Thunderbird Mail There companion mail program was highly favored in PCWorld Magazine, this has a good spam filter and is more secure than Outlook Express.

* Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.

* WINDOWS UPDATES - Enable Automatic Updates
Right click on MY COMPUTER/Click on PROPERTIES/ AUTOMATIC UPDATES and put a mark in the radio button
DOWNLOAD UPDATES FOR ME BUT LET ME CHOOSE WHEN TO INSTALL THEM.

* Go to START/ CONTROL PANEL> PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE> REARRANGE ITEMS ON YOUR HARD DISK TO MAKE PROGRAMS RUN FASTER
This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to keep your system running good. The first time you run it, it may take awhile.

Ken :D
Ken, Thanks for the tips. I will do the System Restore thing as you suggest. I already have CCleaner, Spybot S&D, Adaware, Spyware Blaster and Windows Defender and WinPatrol. I have AVG anti-virus and it runs a scan daily. For now I have Norton Personal Firewall and will keep it till the subscription runs out. After that I will switch to ZoneAlarm which I use at work. I already use Firefox and have windows update enabled. I also have a task scheduled to run every night to defrag the hard disks on the machine. I will do the remaining ones on your list. Many thanks again. By the way, I was watching a movie last night called Gentleman's Agreement (1948) in which your city was featured! :) -Raghu
Ken, Just to close the loop with you, I did get an answer to the Norton/Symantec issue on Castle Cops. The gist is that Symantec puts these generic entries in the registry that do not provide much information and hence tools tend to think that the whole deal is installed even though one single component is installed. So, basically Norton Internet Security suite is not present on my machine. Thanks. -Raghu
