Hello, I have been working on this problem for several days and feel like I am making little or no progress. On Friday 7/28, I caught a virus. My browser was hijacked and I kept getting phony popups trying to sell me anti spyware software. I knew better than to buy from them but I did go to Symantec because I have used them for years and (until now) I was happy with them. So I bought and downloaded the latest version of Systemworks and Personal Firewall. I also did a little research and found it was a SmitFraud type infection. I downloaded a fixer and followed the instructions. I can't tell you all the steps I took because I didnt write them down (I know I should have) but this is where I am now… When I boot up, everything comes up normally though a little slower than before I installed the new symantec stuff. When I go to open up IE, all of a sudden my tasks in my task bar move around and the existing explorer windows close. I disconnect from the internet by removing my net cable from the DSL router/modem. The explorer.exe process then begins taking all cpu cycles. I lower the priority of the process to LOW and fire up Anti-Virus. I set that priority to "Above Normal" and scan my system. Sometimes it finds a trojan sometimes it finds no threat. When it does find a threat it says it quarantines it. It takes 8-9 hours for norton to do a system scan. I just finished scanning the registry, memory and the C drive and that alone took 3 hours and reported as clean. So I ran a scan with ewido anti spyware and got 28 objects and 37 traces found. I dont know if thats bad but it sounds like it. They all look like cookies but I really am not sure. I ran a 3rd tool a couple of days ago after a "clean" scan and it reported different problems. So, I am confused. I no longer know what I need to worry about and what I don't. I do have a laptop that is SO FAR not acting up. I can connect it to my DSL line and get to the internet and that is what I'm using right now. My concern is how do I get the tools I need on the infected machine without A) Infecting the laptop and B) connecting the infected machine to the internet and transmitting stuff. My immediate goal is to get the machine usable. I really can't afford to spend a lot of money to do this and feel that I can follow instructions if I can get them from someone who can answer my questions along the way. In the end though I am concerned about what infor might have been transmitted already and what I need to do to repair the damage. Can someone please help? Thanks in advance! Gandalf

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new HijackThiS! log file into this thread.

And describe if this helps your explorer.exe problem or not.
:)
Micah, Thank you so much for replying to my post! I know you helpers are busy but I was starting to worry. I appreciate your help very very much. Since it was several days since my initial post, I did try to isolate the problem and kept rescanning with ewido and Spybot S&D. Sometimes I'd find errors, sometimes I wouldn't. I'd fix any errors I'd find. The explorer problem kept coming back. So, when it came back this morning, I went to check for a reply to my post and found your instructions. I am using this forum from a laptop that I hope stays uninfected. I don't know if this thing spreads over a LAN. Anyway, I had to reboot before running HJT because I couldn't get it to start due to explorer hogging all my cycles. I got it running but explorer was again hogging cycles. I fixed the four problems you noted. When I rebooted in safe mode, explorer was still hogging cycles. I went to the folders you mentioned. The folders existed but notepad.exe was no longer there and niether was the 1e14e853.exe (in the other directory). I have hidden and system files visible by default and I checked and this was still the case. There were no other exes in either folder. Rebooted to Normal mode and explore.exe is hogging cycles so badly that I can't get HJT to start even after lowering explore.exe's process priority down to LOW. Tried to start ewido with no luck either. This is where I have mucked around over the last couple of days and somehow gotten the system to start back up "normally" without explore.exe in HOG mode. It will then run for several hours until the problem comes back. I will try to get it back in that mode so I can get a fresh HJT log. I'll write down my steps and post them here with a fresh HJT log if/when successful. In the meantime, if you have further advice, please post. Thanks again! Regards, Gandalf
Before posting a new HijackThis! log, please do this:

Rename this file (HijackThis!):

D:\AntiSpy Programs\HijackThis.exe

to:

D:\AntiSpy Programs\moose.exe

Reboot.

Run it and post another log file into this thread.

:)
There are new malware items that can "hide" from HijackThis! Renaming it, and rebooting, should make them appear, if present. :)
Micah,

OOPS. I missed your reply and didn't reboot after renaming. I am rebooting now and will post another log. Sorry about that. Regards, Gandalf
Your problem has already surfaced:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0ED29C6E-E1F5-4C69-B436-736AB84ADFBA} - C:\WINNT\system32\vtsqn.dll

O20 - Winlogon Notify: vtsqn - C:\WINNT\system32\vtsqn.dll

That's a "Vundo" (A.K.A. "Winfixer", A.K.A. "WinAntivirus") infection.

It hooks itself into explorer.exe and winlogon.exe

Download VundoFix.exe to your desktop from here:

VundoFix.exe

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

1. Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
2. Click the Scan for Vundo button.
3. Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
4. If it doesn't find anything, in the main program window, choose "Add more files?". Type this in the box EXACTLY AS SHOWN:

C:\WINNT\system32\vtsqn.dll

Click Close Window, then Remove Vundo.

4. You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES.
5. Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
6. When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
7. Turn your computer back on.

Post a new HijackThis! log, along with the contents of this file:

C:\vundofix.txt

into this thread.
:)
Micah, Ran vundofix.exe per instructions. Added C:\WINNT\system32\vtsqn.dll and attempted remove per instructions. Got fatal error message: "Cannot import c:\vundofix.reg: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error." There is an OK button but I will wait to click until I hear from you. Regards, Gandalf
Micah, Yes… version 5.1.6. Rebooted in safe mode and logged in as Administrator. I know this is a "bad" thing but I always log in as administrator and have been through this whole exercise. started vundofix, and was unable to add the dll.. I right click and do an add but after I type in the path and click add, I close the window and it doesnt show up on the list. Could this be because it is already gone? C:\winnt\system32\vtsqn.dll is no longer there. Should I do another moose scan? What mode (safe or normal)? Do you want me to try to locate the vundofix.txt and include that? Regards, Gandalf Ps. Though I might sound impatient or irritated, it is most definately not at you. I know we are making a great deal of progress and I deeply appreciate your help. Im just very frustrated.
Boot in normal mode and do another "moose" scan. Post the results. If it's still there, we have at least 3 or 4 more "roads" we can adventure down to remove it. ;)
