I have run Spybot S&D, Adaware,Spysweeper, Registry Fix, Xoftspy, and still the simplest of Windows tasks can take forever. I would appreciate some expert advice.

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.


Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.



Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"




Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.


Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Thank you for your kind reply–

I did as you said. The latest HJT log is below. I'm sure you will notice some new things as I continued to try other apps to fix the problem. At the moment I have Outlook, this forum page and Windows Task Manager open. I seem to be getting large spikes in CPU usage…don't know if that means anything or not. I will watch over the next day or so and provide further observations.
