Hi, strange happenings, started last week.
First I get the shield saying downloading updates, (I am set for auto updates), but nothing happens, when I check update history, last updates were 4 on 13 July 2006.
Then next day when I boot up I get a balloon saying new hardware found, well I knew there was no new hardware so ignored that message, but then my printer wouldn't work, so unplugged usb and power for a bit and all was well.
Anyway, I've had the shield a couple of times since, with no downloads, my browser page sometimes clicks off and times when trying to dial up, it says phone line is busy, when I know it isn't and the whole thing seems slower.
I run Ad-Aware, Spybot and AVG every day, all latest versions and updates, all clean, have also run online Bitdefender and Ewido, also clean, tried Windows Live Safety Scanner, it found 2 viruses, but 'stuck' at 24%.
Sorry if this is abit long, but thats the way things happened.
HJT log below, hope you can help. Thanks.

XP Home SP2
IE 6
Ad-aware
Spybot S&D
Spywareblaster
CCleaner
AVG
Windows Firewall

Not seeing anything bad in your log. Did you uncheck items with MSConfig? If so, recheck the ones you unchecked, and restart, post a hijackthis log.
Hi, LDTate, thanks for your replies.

"My guess is your tracking every topic here:'What To Do If You Have No Response In 5 Days?'
You only want to track your own thread."

Did as suggested and unsubscribed from the 'What to do if' thread, so hopefully that will help.

No, had no items unchecked. When things started to go funny I had a look into Task Manager, Processess and noticed, that I had more running (32) than usual (28), wmiprvse.exe, wuaclt.exe, alg.exe, reader_sl.exe which looked new to me, so not sure if these are goodies or baddies, or if I need them running. They are not in my Start Up, so do I need them or should I just 'End Process' them?

Here is latest log, and thanks again.

Please go HERE and do a online scan.
Let me know what is found.

After scan, reboot and post a new HijackThis log

Also let me know how the computer is running now.
Hi, again, sorry for the delay in replying, but I had a problem getting F-Scanner to complete the scan.
Anyway, nothing was found, I've posted scan results and a new HJT log.

Maybe I'm just getting a wee bit paranoid, it was just the sequence of events described in my first post, and the discovery of the .exe's already mentioned, that worried me. Computer still seems to be a bit slower than before.

I was thinking of switching off Windows Firewall and installing Zone Alarm, seems to be more control with it.

Thanks for your assistance.

Hi, again, here is what I found on wmiprvse.exe.

Name Folder Size Type Date Modified
WMIPRVSE.EXE-28F3019A-pf C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch 33KB PF File 12/08/2006 10.08
wmiprvse C:\WINDOWS\System32\wbem 213KB Application 04/08/2004 13.00

I have noticed it before in Task Manager> Processes and ended it and noticed no difference.

Hope this helps, thanks.

That's where it's suppose to be

How's it running? Any issues?
Hi, machine just seems to be generally slow, especially loading internet pages, and sometimes I lose internet connection for no reason. Thanks.
lets see if this will help speed it up.

Backup your Registry…
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run…)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

NOTE: To be extra safe you can choose to only remove the items in RED.
Hi, again, did as you suggested, first run found 337 deleted 87 red, second run found 286 deleted 42 red and third run found 244 all green. Wasn't brave enough to delete everything, so I'll see how it goes. Thanks just now.
Hi, well after running RegSeeker, and deleting only the red items, after a couple of days with no problems I ran it again and deleted everthing found, and so far no problems, so the RegSeeker clean out should've helped a bit. I stilll think my Internet is slow. Many thanks, again.
Shutdown the PC.
Unplug the Power from your Cable Modem / Router / DSL or whatever external devices you have.
Wait 10 minutes and power them back up.

Let me know if that helps.
