Troubleshooting IE
4/29/2006

Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for this inconvenience.

Error Report:

AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: shdocvw.dll
ModVer: 6.0.2900.2877 Offset: 0006d01f

· Tried to install IE using the CD for the XP Home SP2.
· Tried to install using the run command: rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\Inf\ie.inf
· Also tried using the following: How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP (Q318378)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?…b;EN-US;q318378
· I did the following: open Internet Explorer and go to Tools > Internet Options, then click on the Advanced tab. Uncheck the box next to "Enable third party browser extensions", then restart the computer. If the error goes away, it means that you have a third party browser extension (most likely spyware) that is causing the problem.
The error message did go away but the PC runs extremely slow.

I enabled the 3rd party browser and installed booth Ad-Aware SE Professional Edition and Ad-Aware SE.

I still receive the error message and the computer runs very slow.

Please help.

Run online scans

5/1/2006

I was able to run the eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner successfully but I was not able to run the TrendMicro HouseCall at all. Whenever I tried to launch or start the scan, the page would not load completely. There would also be messages as:
· Page is unavailable
· Page cannot be found.

Sometimes when I surf and open a new window, I would get a blank page with the following message: “host is in the black list”

Please help.

Ewido Security Suite

Thanks for your help.

I ran the Ewido Security Suite. I think the IE error message is gone but my PC runs as slow as molasses.
Also, when I turn the computer off or do a restart, I have to do the command twice before the operation takes place.
I had 43 infections after I ran the ESS and removed 42.
The results follows:

Thanks for your help, dicin2
Spybot S&D lets you kill the 04's, the startups. Start Spybot click mode at the top left,
make sure that advanced mode is checked. Then click on tools on the lower left.
Then system startup, to the right is a double arrow bar click it to expand.
Now clicking on a value you will get a description of the command line. Removing the green
check mark will stop the startup, should you decide that you need or want it back just
replace the check mark. Restarting your PC will complete the change.
Remove the check marks from the ones listed below.

You may also remove Ewido Security Suite.
And update windows to SP2.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option,
however if a virus infects a computer with this operating system the virus can be backed up
in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account
which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because
you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

To help keep your PC clean follow the recommendations in Tony Klein's article
So how did I get infected in the first place?
Troubleshooting 05-02-Pt2

I completed the instructions in the last post and the computer is still running slow. I tried to re-install the XP Home SP2 OPS but it won’t load. I received 2 error messages for Windows Setup:
1. The option to upgrade will not be available at this time because setup was unable to load the file E:\i386\WINNTUPG\NETUPGRD.DLL. % 1 is not a valid WIN 32 application.
2. Setup cannot continue because upgrade functionality is disable and your copy of Windows XP only allows upgrades.

In the past, I don’t believe that I had a problem re-installing.
Please help.

Copy/Paste the contecnts of that logfile into your next reply

Sorry for the delay little eagle has been called away for work, and I will be assisting you

First You are running Hijackthis from a temp location. Hijackthis creates backup file which could easily be erased or lost in a temp location

PleaseCreate a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C:
then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Then Re run Hijackthis and post a fresh Hijackthis log

thanks bamajim
In Training at MalWare Removal University - A Cooperative Effort with TomCoyote Classroom
bamajim,

I ran the 2 Anti Virus S/W and now include a HJT from a folder created on the C drive.
Why is it, if I wait a day or so, the hot link that is e-mailed to me brings me to a different page that is not mine? Why dose it change? I used a short cut that I made because of that..
Thanks, bamajim

Sorry for the delay in responding. To answer your question about the email link; I'm not sure but I did notice you had a couple of different threads, and one in "Older than 5 Days"

To avoid confusion try to keep all of your responses in this thread. It will help us both. Thanks

I've noticed that you have been having trouble completing online scans.

First We need to temporarily disable some programs that may interfere with what we are trying to find and fix

We are also going to turn of the eTrust firewall, because it has been known to cause problems with online scans

I Disable SpywareGuard: Right click the running icon of Spywareguard located in the icon tray, it will open the program.
Then go to Menu->>file->> exit.
Then confirm the program is closed.
II We need to temporarily disable the Real-time Protection on Windows Defender
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click Tools => Options
  • Scroll down and uncheck Use real-time protection (recommended).
  • Click Save
  • Close Windows Defender
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

III Disable Ewido background guardOnce the program starts You will be at the Status menu
Under "Your computers Security"
Click change status on Resident shield to inactive
Close Ewido
IV This to Disable AdWatch Open AdAware SE.
Go to AdWatch User Interface.
Go to Tools and Preferences.
At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options Active and Automatic.
Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
Uncheck both options. You can enable these after resolving your problem.
V To reconfigure eTrustRt Click on the eTrust Personal Firewall in the lower icon tray
Left Click "Shutdown eTrust Personal Firewall
"Yes" to confirm
Please see the note below regarding the eTrust firewall
Next Open Taskmanger (Rt Click a blank spot on your lower toolbar->>Taaskmanger)
Locateadblock.exe
Hilite->>Rt Click->>Select end task
Close Taskmanger

Next Run an online virus scan called Kaspersky1. Click on "Kaspersky Online Scanner"
2. A new smaller window will pop up. Press on "Accept". After reading the contents.
3. Now Kaspersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run.
4. Click on "Next"->>"Scan Settings", and make sure the database is set to "extended". And check both the scan options. Then click OK.
5. Then click on "My Computer". And the scan will start.
6. Once finished, save a log as ".txt" to the desktop.
Copy and post the results of the Kaspersky Online scan
As soon as the scan is finished Re enable your eTrust Firewall, even before you post the results

thanks bamajim
