Hello,

When I turned my computer on this afternoon it said that it had a system failure, and said that
attribute failed #05, I believe. It then proceeded to say that it need to check the file system on C: file is NTFS. It also mentioned disks that needed to be checked for consistency. It took about 10 minutes for it to run through & start up, but now it is running slow for the first ten minutes I'm on, and then it goes back to normal. I ran Clean-up, ad-aware, spybot search & destroy as well as a trend micro scan & they all came back fine. However it did the same thing again when I restarted it, however, it ran through less files, as I believe clean-up may have gotten rid of some. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Here is my hijackthis log:

Thank you very much!!
flutterby,
Whenever I've seen this it's been either the OS software is corrupt or your hard drive is about to crash.

I suggest you backup everything you want to keep.

You can use windows sfc (system file checker) You'd need your XP CD to make this work.
Click Start> Run> type sfc /scannow
(Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow)

If the hard drive is crashing there's not anything you can about that.

Your HJT log looks clean.
Hi, Is it a virus that is making it crash? We just had our computer cleaned & updated about 3 months ago, & it was running great until this week! So, do I need to put the disk in before I run the program? Thanks!

I don't see anything bad in your log.
Run the SFC and it'll ask for the CD if needed.
Hi, I ran sfc /scannow & it did ask for the cd but we were never given the XP cd when we bought this computer five years ago. I put in the OS/XP cd they did give me, but it said it is not the correct cd & it had only made it about a third of the way through the scan. When we had this computer looked at early this year they warned us that the hard drive may be going. Do you think we should just take it in & replace it all? Thanks!

Yes, that's what it sounds like. I'd also do this:

Order Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD
