Reboot and see if it made a difference.

If not,
go to Start> Run and type in msconfig , when it loads , select Diagnostic Startup and lets see if it starts up without loading all the programs and drivers on your system.

Do you have your Windows XP installation CD ???
askahlon,

This is just a suggestion, its your option. Just so you know I did this on a gals computer I work with and it fixed it pretty well. This is not a reinstall of windows, this is a repair feature. It will copy the OS over the current installed one and replace any missing or corrupted files. You may have to redo all your service packs, not sure it it will keep them all or not. Follow the instructions for the XP Repair install, remember not to do the repair from the Recovery Console, you bypass that and then do a repair of windows.

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm#RI

Let me know if this helps.

Ken :D
Ken, Thanks for your post. Sorry I havn't got back to you any earlier but been busy at work for the last few days. I tried the XP repair install but still the same problem.
Before you jump to the above recommended forums, run this quick scan.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Do not run Option #2 yet, it will damage your system if your not infected.
Do you still need to run Fixwareout to start your system??

Run it this way, I need to see the report.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

* Save it to your desktop and run it.
* Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
* The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
* You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
* Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt

Now lets check some settings on your system.
(2000/XP) Only
In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet

Connections category
otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually

local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet

Protocol (TCP/IP)
item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable on some systems

Next Go start> Run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

Post the report from Smitfraud, FixWareout and a new HJT log please.
I do still need to run Fixwareout to start my system.
Here's the reports you asked for;

askahlon, We may have found something in your Smitfraud log, but I want to doublecheck it before I have you run Option #2. Be back in a bit. Ken :D
askahlon, :D

This was totally hidden on your HJT log.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Let me see this report and a new HJT log and let me know if it made a difference.
I've still got the problem.
Here are the reports;

askahlon, :D

This is either a windows or a hardware problem, I am out of ideas. Hope you find your answer in one of these forums. At Tom Coyote, we suggest a reformat and a clean install of windows as the last resort or if someone is so badly infected that it compromises there online security. This may be an option for you because something is terribly wrong somewhere. I hope you find an answer for it and dont have to resort to a reformat.
