I was recently trying to download a Guitar Pro 5 file off Limewire and now I have what appears to be the Tagasaurus spyware. I cannot open my task manager and Limewire starts up wheneve I try and start my computer. I am getting tons of random pop ups.

Here is my HJT log. I did it in safe mode…I don't know if that matters or not.

Welcome to the forum! I apologize for the delay getting to your log, the helpers here are all volunteers and we have been very busy here lately. If you are still having malware problems, I will be glad to help. Please post a fresh HJT log in this thread, so I can be sure nothing has changed and give you an accurate fix.
It's getting very bad. I cannot log onto to my main user name even in safe mode. I had to do this scan on my guest account.

* Download AlcanShorty from here.
Click the download button below and agree to download the fix.
Download Alcanshorty to your desktop.
DoubleClick alcanshorty_en.exe and click install
This will create a new folder on your desktop called alcanshorty_en
Open that folder and doubleclick Run.bat
Once the fix starts, your icons and desktop will disappear, this is normal.
Make sure you have a working internet connection. In case your firewall gives an alert, don't block it,
because alcanshorty needs to download some additional files to let the tool run properly.
Wait for the complete script execution box to popup and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.
——————-

* Download Combofix.zip
Unzip it to its own folder.
Read here how to unzip/extract properly.
Open the Combofix folder and doubleclick combo.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt. Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
one more thing before your next post:

You are currently using HijackThis from a temporary directory, this can cause problems.
HijackThis creates backups, these are needed in case of any recovery issues.
Please create a directory on your C:\ drive called C:\HJT, download and unzip HijackThis into that directory. Run the program from that directory from now on.

STEPS For Creating Folder
1. Please go to My Computer, open your C:\ drive, Select: New >> Folder and name the folder HJT.

2. Download HijackThis to the new folder:

3. Double Click on 'HijackThis.zip' to extract and install HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

4. Close ALL windows except HJT

5. SCAN with HJT and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')

6. POST the log in this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')
Please make sure you post the entire log including the top portion:

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER
I am encountering a problem with the combofix program. When I am prompted to press Y and do so, the program's window and my desktop icons dissapear. My system has not frozen though. I am wondering if I should wait for something to pop up or try something else.

Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

Don't do anything while combofix is running. It will pop up eventually :)

(although I don't have an good estimate for how much time should pass)
I'm not messing with the window or anything. I have it running right now on the computer I am trying to fix. The window and desktop icons are not there but hopefully it will pop up. I'll leave it run for a while and reply if nothing happens.
ok.

post a new hijackthis log. make sure its not in a temporary folder

edit: one more thing.

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Please install an antivirus and firewall first, because it doesn't make any sense to remove malware from your system if no scanner is preventing them from reinfecting your computer.

AVG Anti-Virus, Avira OR Avast Home Edition are good FREE antivirus scanners.
After installing ONE antivirus program, download the latest signatures, and do a full system scan.

Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over:
Kerio Personal Firewall OR ZoneAlarm are good FREE firewalls.

Read Understanding and using firewalls to learn more about using firewalls

VERY IMPORTANT: Never install more than ONE antivirus scanner and firewall on your system! Several together can give problems and decrease their reliability and effectiveness!

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response

(an easy way to get to Add or Remove programs is to go to start–>run and type appwiz.cpl)

You have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

if you receive, while running option #1, an error similar like: ''C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe,
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. choose close to terminate the application.."…then please use option 5 or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition. do not run the fix portion without fixing this first.

in your next post, please include
  • l2mfix log
  • new hijackthis log
