Hi - Here is my HijackThis log. Your help would be greatly appreciated! My computer is running extremely slowly all of a sudden and when I look at the Task Manager it is at a full 100% cpu usage!

Many thanks! Noel

Hello Noel :D

Welcome to the forum, you have a few things going on that we need to address.

* Click on MY COMPUTER
* Then on your C: Drive
* Then to TOOLS/ FOLDER OPTIONS/ VIEW
* Choose the radio button to SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS
* Take the checkmark out of HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES
* Then APPLY/ OK

Download and install the 30 day trial of Ewido Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.

* Once you have downloaded Ewido Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
* Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
* On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
* Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
* Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
* Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine
* Under Reports
* Select Automatically generate report after every scan
* Un-Select Only if threats were found
* Close Ewido Anti-Spyware <– Do not run the scan yet.

Open HJT Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, check these items and click on Fix Checked

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [wxcm] c:\winnt\system32\l3n\Sys.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [service32] service32.exe
O4 - Startup: PowerReg SchedulerV2.exe

Boot your computer into Safemode

* Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
* Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the Enter on your Keyboard

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:

* Lauch Ewido-Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
* Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
* Ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
* Once the scan is complete do the following:
* If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
* Next select the Reports icon at the top.
* Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
*** make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
* Close Ewido

Still in Safemode, look for and delete these files by right clicking on Start….then click on Explore and navigate to the following files.

C:\winnt\system32\l3n\Sys.exe
service32.exe <– This one you will have to search for, it could be in C:\, C:\WINNT or C:\WINNT\System32

Reboot back to normal mode and lets run a system cleaner to get all the nooks and cranies.

Installing this program will by default install the Yahoo Toolbar. You can remove the Yahoo Toolbar if you wish via the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

Download and Install CCleaner
* Click on Run Cleaner
Tutorial for CCleaner

I need to see the Ewido Report and a New Hijackthis log please.

Ken :D
Hey Ken! Many thanks to you for your help! Ok, I completed all your steps through Rebooting my computer in safemode. When I did this it wouldn't let me get past the Login to Windows for Administrator (although this is a stand alone computer). It showed the mouse cursor but it didn't work and I tried typing in my password but that didn't work either (e.g., no symbols showed up in the password box). Any suggestions? I did not finish the steps you suggested since I wasn't in safemode. Again . . . THANK YOU!! Noel :)
Follow all the steps and bypass safemode and lets run Ewido in normal mode.

Do a search for service32.exe and let me know what folder its in, we can use a tool later to delete it.

Ken :D
Hey Ken - Again, thank you for all your help and your quick reply!! I ran the ewido scan and have included the report for your review. I looked all over for the sys.exe file as well as the service32.exe. I looked manually, I did a search (and had it look through hidden files). I could not find either one even though I can see the service32.exe still in the HijackThis log. I also ran CCleaner scan as well as an Issues scan and had it "fix all". What do you think?

Again . . . thank you!

Noel :)

Here is my new ewido report:

C:\WINNT\system32\service32.exe

* Check Delete on Reboot
* Check End Explorer Shell while Killing File

Open HJT Scan Only and make sure this is gone.

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [service32] service32.exe

Your Ewido log looked ok by the way.

Post a new HJT log and let me know how your doing
Hello again, Ken!

I did all the steps regarding downloading Pocket Killbox and allowed it to reboot my machine but that file is still in my HijackThis log. :(

What now? How can one file be so hard to delete! I am still running anywhere from 50% to 100% CPU usage! :(

Best wishes! Noel :)

Noel,

Did you install this program??? DameWare NT Utilities 2.6

Dameware NT Utilities program that allows remote access and control of a computer. This is a common program for hackers to install on a computer, so if it is installed, and you did not install it, it should be removed.

What about this one…Ultra WinCleaner Utility Suite. ??

Ken
Ken - Are those new files? No, I didn't install either one. I have a program that I can remote into work . . . I am assuming that neither one fits that description. I went into CCleaner and under Tools to uninstall but neither one was there. I also went into Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and neither one was there either. Unless they go but some different names?? So how do I remove?? Thanks! Noel :)
Hi Noel, :D

If your sure that this program is not related to work we can remove it. We are just going to disable these two programs and not delete it yet, lets make sure it does not cause any problems.

Be 100% sure that this is not related to your company.
* Go to Start> Run and type in services.msc then press Enter
* Scroll down to DameWare NT Utilities 2.6
* Double Click that service to open it.
* Click on Stop Service.
* Then change the Startup Type to Disabled.
* OK your way out of the program.

Follow the same instructions for Windows Memory

Open HJT> Misc. Tools> Open Uninstall Manager…then click on Save List and paste it into your next reply.

Open HJT Scan Only and remove these entries.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [wxcm] c:\winnt\system32\l3n\Sys.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [service32] service32.exe

Post a new log please and I would like to see the uninstall list from HJT.

Ken
Hey Ken! Thanks once again for getting back to me so quickly. I followed all instructions for DameWare (stopped and then disabled). I could not find a file for the Ultra WinCleaner Utility Suite but did find Windows Memory. It was already "stopped" but I did change the Startup Type to Disabled.

Here is the Uninstall List from HijackThis (I had not looked here before):

No problem getting back to you Noel :)

If no ill effects, lets delete both services.

Open HJT > Misc Tools > Delete an NT Service
* Type in DNTUS26
* Then click on OK, it will ask you to reboot, do so.

Do the same for winmem

* Open Pocket Killbox

C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DNTUS26.EXE
c:\winnt\system32\service32.exe
c:\winnt\system32\l3n\Sys.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\os2\dll\winmem.exe

* Highlight all the files with the complete path in the quote and press Ctrl C on your keyboard.

* Go to File > Paste from clipboard
* Set it to Delete on Reboot
* Tick the box that says End Explorer shell while killing file
* If its not greyed out..Click the radio button that say Unregister .dll before deleting.
* Make sure ALL Files is selected
* Click on the Red circle with the white X
* It will ask you to confirm the deletion…Say yes
* It will ask you to reboot, say yes

Post a new HJT log please and let me know how your Task Manager CPU usage is.
Hey Ken!

For step 1, I was not able to get rid of DNTUS26. It said Service DNTUS26 was not found in the registry. I proceeded to step 2 and was able to complete for winmem.

As for Killbox, I wasn’t able to cut and paste all the files (with extensions) at one time so I did them one by one.

I was able to use Pocket Killbox for C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DNTUS26.EXE although Unregister .dll before deleting was grayed out and not an option. I rebooted after this change.

I got the error: “PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been removed by an external process” for:
c:\winnt\system32\service32.exe
c:\winnt\system32\l3n\Sys.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\os2\dll\winmem.exe

I rebooted after this just to clear everything out and because CPU usage is still anywhere from 50% to 100% usage. CPU usage is still in that range after reboot.

Here is the latest HJT log:

Thanks again for helping me through all this!

Noel :)

Good Morning Noel,

Both those bad processes are back :angry:

* Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC, then click the Processes tab.
* In the list of running programs, locate the process: SERVICE32.EXE
* Click on End Process.

Open HJT Scan Only and remove both these entries.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [wxcm] c:\winnt\system32\l3n\Sys.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [service32] service32.exe

Reboot and go back into the Process Tab and see if service32 is gone.

I would still like you to try and run Ewido in Safemode, it may show us if something is hidden that we cant see on your HJT log, it will also do a good job of flushing out a lot of bad files that may be in use in normal mode. I need to see the log from Safemode. Remember, booting into Safemode sometimes takes awhile. If you cant, you can run this quick tool to see if any of your windows files are missing or corrupt.

If you get into Safemode with windows enabled to show all files and folders, make sure these are gone.
C:\winnt\system32\l3n\Sys.exe
C:\winnt\system32\ service32.exe

Click Start>Run, type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things. You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

Lets run the trial of Spysweeper, this is another excellent tool that will show if something is hidden.

Download the trial version of Spy Sweeper from Here
Scroll to the bottom of the page and install the 5.0 trial and not the free online scan.
Install it using the Standard Install option. (You will be asked for your e-mail address,
it is safe to give it. If you receive alerts from your firewall, allow all activities for Spy Sweeper)

You will be prompted to check for updated definitions, please do so.
(This may take several minutes)

Click on Options > Sweep Options and check Sweep all Folders on Selected drives. Check Local Disc C.
Under What to Sweep, check every box.

Click on Sweep and allow it to fully scan your system.When the sweep has finished, click Remove. Click Select All and then Next

From 'Results', select the Session Log tab. Click Save to File and save the log somewhere convenient.

Exit Spy Sweeper.

Restart your computer.

Please copy and paste the SpySweeper log into this thread, along with the Ewido report and a new HJT log <– please include the header also

Let me know also about your CPU usage.

Ken :D
Hey Ken! Good afternoon!

Service32.exe was NOT running under the Process tab so I could not end it.

I did not try to delete through HJT since service32 was not in Process tab and because we have tried it before and nothing has changed this time. (Of course, if you think it might be helpful this time, I will do whatever you suggest. :) )

I could not run the sfc /scannow because I have to get my XP CD's from work (should have them by tonight, hopefully :) ).

I ran Spysweeper and here is the log for that:

After this I was able to get into safemode! I ran Ewido (in Safemode!). Also, while in safemode I delete the 2 files sys.exe and services32.exe. Here is the log for that:

While still in safemode I went into HJT and looked to make sure that those 2 files were gone. Here is the HJT log while running in safemode:
