I recently had a bad infection that I had to use the HJT logs board to resolve. The cause of my problems is gone, but it has still left behind some unplesant side effects. One is that explorer.exe crashes all the time when browsing any folders, and the other being that firefox has a very hard time running flash/shokwave/java apps without crashing. For firefox I've reinstalled all of the plugins but it didn't fix the problem. I haven't tried reinstalling firefox itself yet but will shortly after I backup my bookmarks and make a list of extensions.

For explorer.exe, I don't know what to do. I never had system restore enabled before my infection so that won't help me. I was thinking to do a repair installation of windows from my windows disk, but wanted to know if it will erase any information on my C: drive. If it will then I'll have to back up a ton of info and for that matter, I might as well reformat. Also will doing a repair installation also make me have to redownload windows updates and the like?

On a side note, my Catroot 2 folder is missing… not sure if that would cause any of these problems though.
Ok, never mind the Catroot 2 folder being missing, I just checked and it has been replaced apparently.

Heh, the thing I'm really looking for here is to try and get my system working without having to either reformat or burn a dozen or so DVD's.
Ok, at the moment I really don't give a carp** about the errors in firefox anymore. But I'm about to start ripping my hair out over these explorer.exe crashes. I'm amazingly frustrated atm, so I'll apologize up front for it. Explorer.exe crashes whenever I browse through any folders. This makes simply moving a file from one directory to another, or simply trying to get a shortcut from a desktop folder near impossible. I wanted to attempt a repair installation, and was told, by a source I don't really trust, that doing so wouldn't risk losing information on my C: drive. I have alot of info to lose on the drive currently so I really want to avoid reformatting or anything that could result in data loss. I was going to call Microsoft Customer Support, but realized that it would use up my last free call. (really pisses me off that they charge you after 2 calls to fix their flawed product.) I went to go ahead with the repair installation, figuring just dayam it all and risk data loss, out of frustration. I put in my windows CD, boot from it, and select the Repair Console option by hitting "R". Then it prompts me to select which windows installation I wish to repair… so I select the only one listed option 1 and hit ENTER. It then prompts me to enter a password for the Administrator account. I have no password set for the administrator account so I simply hit enter leaving it blank (which is what I have to do if I turn off auto logon.) It then says that the password is incorrect and prompts me again for the password. I hit ENTER again. A few more frustrated key-poundings and it says that it will just reboot (due to too many incorrect password entries). Now I am at a loss. I have no clue what to do. I am about an inch away from saying screw it all and just trashing the system. The only thing that has stopped me so far is that I have alot of data that would be hard if not impossible to replace. I want to back it up, but can't even browse the folders to see what needs to be backed up without explorer.exe crashing every minute or so. Please, any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
I looked at your log in the malware forum.

There were a few "loose ends" not taken care of.

I don't know if they are the source of your problem or not.

Please post a new HijackThis! log into this thread and let me take a peek.

Then also do this:

Copy the text in the following quote box into Notepad:

dir c:\WINDOWS\system32\{*.* > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Save it to your desktop as ff.bat.

CLOSE NOTEPAD!!!

Now, the ff.bat file on the desktop. A Notepad window will open up.

Please paste it's contents into your next post.

Volume in drive C has no label.

So much for "loose ends"….

Go to:

Start –> Run

In the box type in sfc /scannow then hit (or click OK)

That's:

sfc[SPACE]/scannow

A SPACE is required after sfc.

This is the windows "system file checker".

It will scan for corrupted windows files, and replace them if found.

Have your windows CD's ready. It will ask for them if necessary.

Let me know how it goes.

I am at work, and may not be able to reply for a few hours.
:)
Well, I ran that and right away I got a window popping up saying "Windows File Protection. Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache. Insert you Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1 CD now. It is already in the drive, and yet it isn't being recognised. I took the disc out and reinserted… got the autorun to install windows, but no update on the message box, I hit retry and same as before. I'll give this a shot in safemode and see if it works then. BTW, thanks alot for the help. EDIT: Ok scratch that idea, it won't work in safemode. The dos prompt window shows up but has nothing in it and disappears and nothing happens. Rebooting and trying again in regular windows mode. EDIT2: I ran it again in windows and just kept hitting the Retry key every time it asked for the windows cd. The little blue progress bar kept moving, so no clue if it actually did anything or not. I did notice that sometimes it asked for the windows XP pro disc and others it asked for the Windows XP pro SP1 disc. The disc I have is Windows XP Pro SP1a. EDIT3: I need to get some sleep. Been running on next to none (which I'm sure is doing a wonderful job of enhancing my mood). Be back in a couple of hours or so.

SFC Reference

Well that certainly answered alot. Originally my CD drive was D: and since I had added a HDD, I named the new HDD D: and made the CD drive Z:. Still copied the folder to C: since I figured it may come in handy.

I ran a new scan with the I386 folder in the C:\ Directory. I got no prompts of any kind during or after the scan. I'm assuming that means no changes were made. After the scan I browsed around some folders and eventually it locked up.

I realized that when you had me do that HJT scan it was after explorer.exe had crashed, so I figured I'd do a new scan pre-crash to see if anything may be different.

Well……

To be honest, I'm not good at giving directions for reloading Windows.

All I do is kill trojans and browser Hijackers.

I'm going to send a PM to dough.

He posts in this forum a lot, and is light years ahead of me when it comes to situations like this.

I hope he can get you back to "new" condition.
:)
Hi bobdolethebananaman,

I got a PM from Micah, asking me to look in on your progress.

First question: Have you got the problem resolved?

Next question: What further actions have you taken to attempt to resolve the problem, that you haven't posted about already in your discussions with Micah? (whether they worked or not)

Next question: If you can get online with MS Internet Explorer, will you please go over to www.pcpitstop.com and Run a Full Test, then Post the "TechExpress link" back into this Forum thread?

First comment: The steps that you've taken so far, with recommendations from Micah, were good attempts to resolve the problem, if it were specifically a problem inside the Windows Operating System. It still might be an Windows Operating System problem, but I'd like to check out a couple of other things with you, first.

I'm concerned that you changed the letter assignment of D:\, after it was already assigned to your CD drive unit. The native Windows CD driver file would have been associated with D:\ which is now a Hard Drive, and not with Z:\ which is the CD unit. I wonder if that's why you're having trouble getting the MS CD recognized.

Please read the following Microsoft knowledge based article on assigning drive letters in Windows XP.
How to change drive letter assignments in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?…b;EN-US;q307844

Did you follow those steps?
The Microsoft article does not say you can't do what you did with drive letter assignments, but I'm wondering.

As a general rule, I allow Windows to assign Drive Letter designations.
And I've never interfered with Windows assignment for a CD Driver.
I wonder if your system would be able access drives and files if you did the following:

Use the Microsoft instructions to change the designation of your second Hard Drive (which is now labeled D:\)
To another letter, late in the alphabet.

After you've changed the above Hard Drive, then go through the same steps to re-assign D:\ as the designation for your CD unit.

Next: Go to device manager and have a look under CD ROM and Disk Drives.
Do you see any yellow or red warning signs.
(Don't attempt any repair yet at this time, if you do find warnings. Just report back with what was tagged)

Next: Does Windows recognize a CD when inserted into D:\

Pause:

It's early Friday evening here. I have some brief obligations, and then a little more research to do before I write my main recommendation. Please follow the above recommendations, if it sounds sensible to you to do so, and respond to the questions. (Hopefully, also post the TechExpress link to your Full Test results.)

I'll be back a bit later this evening.

Doug
No the problem still persists.

The only things I can think of that I havn't posted about is scans with spybot S&D and adaware.

The issue with the windows CD not being recognized has been resolved. It recognizes CDs just fine and even the windows CD just fine, the problem was with the SFC utility specifically, ans was resolved with the link Micah provided. The regristry keys that tell SFC where to look for the files for the DLL Cache doesn't always update when drive letters are changed. I could have simply changed it to reflect the drives new location, but instead I copied the folder it looks for to the C: drive and told it to look there, for ease of use in the future, as per recommendation on that website. I have, at the moment, no problems with my CD drive whatsoever. Oh, and I used the Microsoft instructions to change the drive letters the first time around. Just for the sake of elaboration… The reason I changed the letters is because when you add a new HDD or even sometimes a new optical drive, it will change the letters of pre-existing drives, which can be a pain in the neck. So if you make your optical drives the highest letters in the alphabet possible, then when you add a new HDD, or optical drive, it will just go to the next highest from your lowest lettered drive. (ie. you have one hard drive and one optical drive, you add a second hard drive and it names itself D and bumps your optical drive to E. Naming your optical drive Z will make it that and nothing will change it automatically if you add or subtract drives in the future)

EDIT: Looking at those results I think I'd better run a defrag on C:. Heh, I almost hope that isn't the problem… stupid of me to overlook.
