Hello and Welcome to the Forum.

Please delete any HijackThis Folders and Files you have now.Use Add/Remove Programs and remove HijackThis. What you have now is out dated.

you can get a complete installer that installs HijackThis to C:\Program Files\HijackThis, making an entry in the start menu and also providing a desktop shortcut from http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe .

Click on the link and select Save, save it to your desktop and double click HJTsetup.exe.

Open HijackThis and select: Do a system scan and save a log file.

When the scan is finished, Click Edit> Select All> Edit> Copy> and paste its contents here plese use the [Add Reply] button below.
Thanks so so much LDTate! The pop-ups are killing me and everytime I open Windows Explorer another window pops up…annoying…Here is the log:

Sun Java Test

Sun Microsystems has fixed five security bugs in Java that expose computers running Linux, Solaris and Windows to hacker attack.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

These are Optional fixes and aren't bad except for the ALCXMNTR.EXE file.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Delete this File if listed:
ALCXMNTR.EXE

Empty Recycle bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi: thanks for asking, I couldn't find any of the old SUN JAVA programs at all in ADD/REMOVE SOFTWARE. However, I loaded the new version off the link you provided above.

I could not get the JAVA test to work, it didn't do anything when I clicked on the button. I tried closing/opening my browser to no avail.

I'm Pretty sure that I got all the things removed from your list of things to remove in HJT. I didn't see any ALCXMNTR.EXE file.

(The Trash is empty now too.)

Question for you: is SMARTCHIPS search engine bad or is it slowing the computer..I removed it like you said but told the other girl who shares this PC I'd ask you what the deal is.

And the computer seems to be behaving fine…so far…

Question for you: is SMARTCHIPS search engine bad or is it slowing the computer..I removed it like you said but told the other girl who shares this PC I'd ask you what the deal is.

I know nothing about SMARTCHIPS. It's still in your log. If you want it as your homepage / Search page that's your choice

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.searchchips.com/

Good Job

Log looks good :D  How is it running any issues?

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.
