I have tried to rid my system of spyware/adware/carp** for the last week or so using adaware/spybot/ewido, to no avail. I keep having popups occur even when I am not browsing.

I came across HijackThis in my search for help!

Don't worry about being "pushy" (I didn't think you were being "pushy"). Most days we're "up to our armpits in alligators", and logs can get passed by, unintentionally. :oops:

Your Java needs updated:

The latest version out is jre1.5.0_07

After updating you must remove previous versions via "Add/Remove Programs".

I need this post reopened because I spoke too soon about the problem being solved!
I just had a pop-up occur. This pop-up shows that it came from IE, but I am using Firefox to browse. I need help in further troubleshooting where this problem is coming from.

Please download and run Spybot-Search&Destroy and Ad-Aware; they are the standard programs for finding and cleaning malware off your system. Here are links to both programs, and instructions for their use.

Get Spybot - Search & Destroy from Spybot Search and Destroy
(This is the NEW Version 1.4)
Get AdAware SE Personal from Lavasoft
(This is the NEW Build 1.6)

Download and install these programs if you don't already have them. If you do have them, make sure they are UPDATED AND CONFIGURED AS DESCRIBED here:

Configure Adaware

Configure Spybot

Reboot after running each program.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
Under Firefox choose: Firefox cache and Firefox cookies
Click the Empty Selected button.


Please try this free online virus scan of your system:

Panda Activescan
Accept default settings.

When if finishes, save the report.

Reboot.

Hello Micah, I followed your instructions but got stuck at running the Panda Active Scan. It seems that the active x app cannot install. I have been trying to figure this one out pretty much all morning…… I will keep at it, and reply back with the logs once I am able to run the scan! peace

Maybe you can try this one:

Trend-Micro Housecall
Put on 'Autoclean' and delete what it can't clean.

Or this one:

Etrust Security Advisor
Choose 'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful.

I'm not sure they have the option to "save a log" when complete.

But, we'll do the best we can with what we have.

Boot in "safe mode" and run ATF cleaner per previous instructions.

Boot back in regular mode.

Any popups recently?

Hello again,

I did as instructed.

I booted back into regular mode. I opened IE and got a pop-up almost immediately. The pop-ups are always adds for some kind of security software. Usually it's for sysprotect or some junk like that.
