Need help removing popcorn.net and about:blank

Was having bad problems with about:blank taking over my home page but suddenly it seems to have quit. I am sure I am still infected as I have done nothing to get rid of it. My son downloaded popcorn.net and it is constantly popping up trying to convince me to pay. They are SCUM!

Hello and Welcome to the Forum.

Please delete any HijackThis Folders and Files you have now.Use Add/Remove Programs and remove HijackThis. What you have now is out dated.

you can get a complete installer that installs HijackThis to C:\Program Files\HijackThis, making an entry in the start menu and also providing a desktop shortcut from http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe .

Click on the link and select Save, save it to your desktop and double click HJTsetup.exe.

Open HijackThis and select: Do a system scan and save a log file.

When the scan is finished, Click Edit> Select All> Edit> Copy> and paste its contents here plese use the [Add Reply] button below.

Do not post your problems into other open logs saying "I have the same issue, here is my log" etc. This is too confusing for everyone involved. OK, here is the new log. Sorry about the late response, had a family medical prob. I was unable to delet the outdated HJT program as it did not show up in my Add/delete programs list for some reason and no "remove" file installed in the same folder. Downloaded program as specified and the new log is below. As always, THANKS FOR THE HELP

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.


Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.


1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:
Go to Control Panel – Add/Remove Programs and remove any of these that you find there:

License Manager
MovieLand
MediaPipe
AccessMedia or My Access Media

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.


Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Done.

A couple of notes: After making the view settings changes none of the programs listed below showed up on add/delete list. After rebooting and opening IE, no annoying notifier window! (yet). Thanks a lot!

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.





If you dont have these programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Thanks so much for all of the help. I learned a lot, probably enough to be dangerous. My sister has 6 kids all downloading every program imaginable. It only takes a few weeks for them to ruin a new pc. That one would prob be a good log for teaching! My pc is running and booting up faster than it has in a long time–hopefully this won't happen again as I have read everything and installed and run every program recommended. I have new laptop that has media pipe intalled (from Son) and again, it doesn't show up on add/remove list. I would like to get it cleaned up and then install all the protections recommended. I will post it in a new topic and wait to hear. Thanks again
