OK……….
windows 2000
have zone alarm,
AVG (runs for several hours & finds nothing)
spybot (ran for 3 days)
ad-aware (keeps locking up)
downloaded hijack this - read that I must download ewido
download it & got a message that "a bad thing has happened"

I also noticed a lot of "coolweb search.zip", etc files while unzipping hijack this - but when I attempted a file search - it erred out & would not finish. - please help

AVG runs, now - found & healed several "generic trojan horse downloaders"
SpyBot still runs really really slow
ad-aware locks up
file search d/n work
programs start slow but run ok
internet noticably slower when using more than 1 screen

I started looking thru files & doing a search to see what they were & deleted them if the search said they were bad. things seemed to get better but still have problems as mentioned above. I really do appreciate your time & effort. most of the time spybot, ad-aware, or AVG do not fix a problem I can do a search & find a remover on line, or find out how to remove it manually. But I just can't figure out what is wrong & have become pretty frustrated.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log in the forum please.

I suggest you do this:


You need To disable TeaTimer, it can stop our fix.

1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts


Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.


Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.




Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.


Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

ok………..did as told to
went to spybot S&D -unchecked "resident tea timer" did not get any prompts
ran it - said no threats

ran hijack this & put a check in box for each item as instructed.

cn find runload32.exe or dvldr32.exe - but did delete cssgn.exe & {dcf42e6e……….}.exe

downloaded & ran ATF

computer sems to be running much better now - except for internet. everything is really, really slow to load.
I expected slow but I have cable & it's slower than dial-up………but worse yet - c/n get my "excite" homepage to stay as homepage. I go to "excite" then go to tools, then choose "use current" click ok…..click on tools again & it's on MSN. every time I start the net it goes to MSN. went to tools then deleted temp internet files (= about 5mb - ATF d/n delete them) did not help.

otherwise everthing seems fine - see that a lot of progress was made. it feels like I am a lot better off than I was before.

There's a setting in Zone Alarm. Program control > Main > Program control > custom > OS firewall > Change internet explorer homepage. If this is set to block (big red 'X'), then it's impossible to change the homepage. to fix, click the 'X' and change it to '?' (ask).

OK………………removing zone alarm, choosing the hompage & then reinstalling zone alarm has become little low on my list of priorities. a couple of RPh's left a couple of the other phy's, so the company borrowed my relief RPh's to help keep the others open. that leaves me working 6 ten hr shifts - so I designated one of the "quick" buttons on my track ball to go to the home page that i want. everything else (computer) is working great. frustration level has decreased much. want to express extreme grattitude for your help. i am using 120gb hd for programs & 300gb hd for data (excel, word, quicken, tv shows, etc). i'm thinking about adding another 15gb hd just for windows. once every year (or so) & whenever a problem arises, i could just reformat & reinstall windows without disturbing the rest of my data. don't know how valid this would be - but it sounds good……… thanks again carlo

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.





If you dont have these programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.
