Just formatted my laptop and used a legit copy of XP. Have downloaded all the updates and security patches. My home page is currently set to msn.com. No matter how many attempts I make, changing never works. I read about Hijack This and ran the program. Here is my logfile:

Hello Slabjacker and Welcome to TomCoyote,

You have something disabled in MSconfig, please go to Start>Run>type 'msconfig' (no quotes) and select the "Startup tab" and “Enable all” and run Hijackthis. Then post a new HijackThis log. After you run the hijackthis, then run msconfig again and disable the items BEFORE you reboot.

I noticed that you are using Zone Alarm for your firewall.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Zone Labs Client] "C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe

Please tell me what version you have installed of Zone Alarm. Is it the Pro version or the free version. I have read some complaints about not being able to change the home page with the Zone Alarm.
Thanks for the speedy reply, Susan.

My only concern with disabling all the items in the startup tab is that it will cancel out my anti-virus program and firewall (Zone Alarm). Should they not be running all the time for protection sake?

I'm responding on my home PC at the moment. I'll follow your instructions and re-post the HJ log soon. FYI: I'm using the free version of Zone Alarm. Is the Windows firewall better (ie. should I dump Zone Alarm)?

SJ
As promised, here is the updated HJ log with all items enabled. The Zone Alarm is the free program, not the Pro version.

Thanks in advance.

You had something disabled for a reason? If you enable it and run hijackthis then you disable it again before you post your hijackthis log, your system will be like it was and I will also have the benefit of seeing your hijackthis log without things being disabled.
==============================

Thanks for the hijackthis log. Your log appears to be clean. What I have read is that with the Zone Alarm free version, there have been complaints about not being able to change home page.

I would prefer an application firewall over the XP firewall.

You might try to uninstall the free Zone Alarm, change your homepage to what you want and then reinstall Zone Alarm. Or maybe you would like to try some other firewalls, but I would prefer one over the XP firewall.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Understanding and Using Firewalls
That was it!! It was Zone Alarm. I uninstalled and it has set the home page properly now. Thanks so much for the advice. Regarding Firewalls; can you recommend one? LM
Actually I use the ZA free one too. If you use the link I provided and scroll down, you will see information on the different firewalls.
