Hi,

I had good success here yesterday on one of my sister's computers, I decided to have a go at another one.

A month ago I cleaned a load of junk off here with a combo of Adaware, Spybot, Windows Defender, Panda Activescan and Housecall. (CometCursor, Apropos, IBIS, TSPY___Small.sn, and a load more).

The 016 screensavers.com item looks like a pretty obvious fix. A Google search showed PWMediaSendControl Class as a probable fix too. I'm not sure about EPSImageControlClass.

Here's the log.

Thanks for taking a look, and any advice.

One other thing. The Norton AV Auto-protect won't enable. I visited the Symantec site and found an online fix for the problem, but it didn't work. Any advice on how to fix the problem is welcome.
I see you're back for more "punishment", eh?
;)

Disable Microsoft Windows Defender:
We need to disable your Microsoft Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft Windows Defender. Click Start, Programs, Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Under Real-time protection options, unselect the Turn on real-time protection check box
  • Click Save
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This!.

Reboot.

The "O16" entries are generally "safe" to fix.

They are active-x components loaded on your machine by web sites. If you "fix" them, then go back to that web site, they'll just get re-loaded.

If you don't recognize the "O16", fix it.

Which version of Norton do you have?
Punishment? It feels great cleaning off all this junk :) Alright, I exterminated those 016s (Thanks for the info on 016s in general). The AV is Norton 2003 Professional, vers. 9.05.15. Basically, this computer was so saddled with popups that it was shut down and gathered dust until a month ago, when I asked if I could try to clean it up. I considered just removing the Norton and adding AVG, but since the subscription is good through 12/06 it may be worth trying to repair. Thanks for your help!
Thanks. That fix was more in depth than what I'd found at Symantec, and looked promising. Unfortunately, no go. I can't get the two apps (ccApp and ccRegVfy) to run from Common Files/Symantec Shared, which means no apearance of the icon in the sys tray. ccApp does not appear in the Task List, although it (as well as ccRegVfy) are checked in MSCONFIG Startup - I tried the uncheck/recheck trick to no avail. Sounds like something is missing and/or corrupted. I'll dig around a bit more and see what I can come up with.
You've probably already seen this one:

click me

Notice what it says:

If any of the listed entries are missing, it indicates that Norton AntiVirus was not installed successfully. If you see this, go on to the section "To remove and reinstall Norton AntiVirus" and follow the instructions.

That can be a "tough row to hoe".

I did that with my Norton 2006.

Had to do some manual registry edits to get it to go the 2nd time aaround.
:wtf:
I dug around for disks in case I have to reinstall, but haven't fund anything. I'm also thinking of how Norton entirely missed infections found by Housecall and Panda. I uninstalled McAfee from my own system and replaced it with PCcillin for similar reasons. I just tried LiveUpdate and it entirely failed. A month ago when I ran it some files didn't install, but for the most prt it was a success. I'm on the Symantec site now, prepping to run a removal tool for damaged LiveUpdate files. We'll see what happens. The more I search there are loads of hits for this Auto-protect problem. I'll try a few more sites, but it's too sunny outside for me to get too obsessed right now :) Thanks again for the help, Micah. Tak care! :)
None of the auto-fix tools at Symantec's site work on this computer, though I believe it meets all the criteria for the fixes. I'll have to wait til my brother-in-law's return to find out if he knows where the Norton cds are for reinstallation, or if he wants to go with another AV program.

May as well move this thread to Resolved, since we took care of the HJT items.

Thanks again for the help!

Don't forget the SPF-(whatever)!!!

Kept myself mostly in the shade :)
