Good morning ladies and gentlemen,

I need so much help it borders on funny.
Let's see…….

It all started with a little delay in the time that it took Firefox to open up my homepage (only time I use IE is to update) it has now progressed to not being able to run any program longer than 3-4 minutes, and 90% of them won't open at all. Most programs (even System Restore) just open for about 1/2 second then close. I have scanned with Trend Micro and I have Kaspersky, alas they find nothing. AdAware, S&D, SPySweeper now all come up empty and the problem persists. Please help as it is quite embarrassing to have to use husband's computer everyday.

Don't know if you need it, but if it helps

I have alsp posted this over at SWI as I am told these are the 2 forums to go to.
Welcome to the forum :wavey:

I have alsp posted this over at SWI as I am told these are the 2 forums to go to.

I sincerely do not mean this to be rude, or blunt, or inconsiderate, but you need to decide which forum you will be assisted at, and ask the other forum to close your thread.

The supply of "malware fighters" is limited, and if you have two working on the same problem, someone is wasting their time.

If you decide to use the forums here, I will gladly assist you.
:)
I am so very sorry for my oversight, and will close the other thread at SWI immediately. I wasn't aware I was doing something wrong but it makes sense now that I think about it. Thank you in advance.
CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\System32\Userinit.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [p2pnetworking] p2pnetworking.exe

O16 - DPF: {74CD40EA-EF77-4BAD-808A-B5982DA73F20} - http://yax-download.yazzle.net/YazzleActiveX.cab?refid=1123

O20 - Winlogon Notify: efcaxyw - efcaxyw.dll (file missing)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: wingsa32 - wingsa32.dll (file missing)

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This!.

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Delete all of the following noted (in red) file(s)/FOLDER(s) you can find:

c:\windows\system32\p2pnetworking.exe <— file

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis! log file into this thread. :)
ok, after boot into safe mode the p2pnetworking.exe couldn't be found.
The only p2p files in the system32 folder are:

p2p.dll
p2pgasvc.dll
p2pgraph.dll
p2pnetsh.dll
p2psvc.dll

I can't search for p2pnetworking b/c when I open up search when I click on "All files and folders" the search prgoram closes. (Same problem I am having with most other progs.) Here is the new HJT anyway.

The log looks good.

If your problem persists, I suggest this:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

Don't run it yet.

Please download, install, and update the NEW free version of Ewido trojan scanner:
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Close Ewido.
  • Boot in "safe" mode
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program. Under Main choose: Select All. Click the Empty Selected button.
  • Under Firefox choose: Firefox cache and Firefox cookies. Click the Empty Selected button. Close the program.
  • Run Ewido. Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. Select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  • When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.
Boot in normal mode.

Please post the results from ewido and a new hijackthis log, and describe how the PC is behaving.
:)
ok, sorry it took so long.

Ad-Aware and SpySweeper also found *purity* but it said they were gone….guess not.

PC Behavior….Well I still can't use search function, IE closes immediately after opened, Can't view any pages online that have any kind of media on them I.E. Windows Media Clips b/c it closes browser (firefox),
System Restore closes immediately after being opened.

**EDIT** I should clarify IE problems. If I set the IE homepage to windowsupdate.microsoft.com it auto closes. If I set it to google.com it will open, but when you try to search from the page it then closes….either way it closes.

After talking to the husband, he said I should tell you that I just recently purchased Window Washer from WebRoot software to clean up the HDD.

Hope thats all you need……I will be keeping a close watch for your reply.
The Ewido log looks pretty benign.

The HijackThis! log is still free of "malware".

A couple of items……..

This:

O23 - Service: WAN Miniport (ATW) Service (WANMiniportService) - America Online, Inc. - C:\WINDOWS\wanmpsvc.exe

Looks like a "leftover" from an AOL uninstall.

If you don't use AOL, let me know, and I'll tell you how to remove it.

And it appears you have 2 antivirus programs active: Kaspersky, and Norton.

This is not recommended.

I suggest you choose ONE, and disable or uninstall the other.

When it comes to AV programs, "more" is not "better".

While this may, or may not "solve" your problem, it should definitely improve system performance.

Do you have Windows installation CD's available?
I have never had AOL on this comp (glad to say so) and Have tried at least 435 times to uninstall that to no avail. I only use Kaspersky so Norton will go. This is an OEM so no install cd, but I know where the i386 folder is if thats any help? Also…..1 more thing on the Windows Media crash. It appears that only embedded Windows Media crashes the browser so I tried to open Media Player and all I got was "An Internal error has occured"…… 2 questions before I proceed. After I uninstall Nortaon and you show me how to squash AOL should I A) Download IE 7 and install it to see if it helps w/IE prob B) Download Media Player 11 and see if same? thank you so very much.
Let's do "baby steps" here….

Looks like you have a "leftover" from an AVG uninstall as well.

We'll get rid of it, too.

Copy the text in the following quote box into Notepad:

sc stop Avg7Alrt
sc delete Avg7Alrt
sc stop WANMiniportService
sc delete WANMiniportService

Save it to your desktop as ff.bat

Fix these items with HijackThis!

O23 - Service: AVG7 Alert Manager Server (Avg7Alrt) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgamsvr.exe (file missing)

O23 - Service: WAN Miniport (ATW) Service (WANMiniportService) - America Online, Inc. - C:\WINDOWS\wanmpsvc.exe

Close HijackThis!

Now, the ff.bat file on the desktop. A DOS window will briefly open, then close.

Then if your going to uninstall Norton, do that next, then reboot.

Post a new HijackThis! log, and see if your system is any "better".
:)
Well everything that I have tested so far (windows update, system restore, IE) works just fine now. You should see the smile on my face. Media Player still won't open.

If everything works by the time husband gets home then he has to take me out. If you lived here we'd be taking you along. :)

Hmmmm….

If Media Player won't even open, you may want to uninstall it, reboot, and re-install it.

That may be faster than trying to troubleshoot it.

Version 11 is still "Beta", so I'd stay away from it (my own personal opinion).

To uninstall Mediaplayer 10 (since you have SP2):

Go to:

Start –> Control Panel –> Add/Remove Programs

At the top of that panel, check the "Show updates" box.

Scroll down to "Windows XP - Software Updates"

Under it you'll find "Windows Media Player 10".

Remove it, then reboot.

Then install it again:

Windows Media Download Center

:)
Media Player reinstalled and now works great. I am quite sure that is everything working again….unless you can think of anything else? I appreciate your help so much with this.
