Having read some other similar problems with system32 folders opening, I note that one of the reasons for this problem could be…….

"it will happen if you have a blank/invalid entry in the registry trying to open at startup"

To check this I believe a startlist log from HijackThis could be useful.

Accordingly I have attached startuplist log below:

******************************************************

Your problem is usually caused by an incomplete or corrupted registry entry.

The only one I can see is this one:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: winldg32 - C:\WINDOWS\

"Fix" the above item with HijackThis! and reboot.

Does that help?
Thankyou Micah_6:8. I have deleted line 020 using Hijackthis and rebooted. Unfortunately the system32 folder is still coming up. Any other thoughts? :(
Let's look a few other places.

Copy the text in the following quote box into Notepad:

regedit /e reg.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"
regedit /e reg1.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices"
regedit /e reg2.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"

Save it to your desktop as ff.bat

Now, the ff.bat file on the desktop.

It will create 3 files on the desktop:

reg.txt
reg1.txt
reg2.txt

Open them up with Notepad, and "copy/paste" them into your next post.

Then you may remove the files from the desktop (ff.bat, reg.txt, reg1.txt, reg2.txt)

:)

P.S. - Please include a new HijackThis! log, as well.
Ok ran the ff.bat file but only got 2 files created on desktop. Reg and Reg2.

Reg is as follows:

Close all browser windows, and fix these:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - - (no file)

O2 - BHO: Nothing - {5f4c3d09-b3b9-4f88-aa82-31332fee1c08} - blank (file missing)

Reboot and post a new log file….

Does the system32 folder still open up?

That last "O2" is a sign of a very serious infection….

How did you remove it?
Hi again.

Have removed the 2 lines you identified and rebooted, however still no joy.

Very frustrating.

:(

Yes, It was a stubborn infection. Kept popping up fake security windows all over the place and changing my default home internet site all the time.

I downloaded and ran a few things mostly shareware or trial versions such as:

Windows Defender from MS site.
Spybot seach & destroy

These two seemed to fix up the infection. Then tried the following to try and fix the system32 folder.

PC Tools Registry Mechanic
CCleaner
Wintuneup
Registry Fix
Registry Repair
Prevx1

No joy so far though. Although I do like the prevx1 software. Makes its very obvious if you are trying to download something which is new and unknown and therefore more risky.

Revised logfile attached, hope you can see something else.

Let's see what this tells us:

Only for Windows XP and Windows 2000

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

[external image: Posted Image]

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter

[external image: Posted Image]

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. It will create a file named:
c:\rapport.txt

Open that file with Notepad, and "copy/paste" the ENTIRE CONTENTS of it into this thread.
:)
Ok, ran smithfraudfix. Copy and paste the contents of the quote box below into Notepad.

Save it as file name: "fixme.reg" (not including the quotes). Save as file type: *All files* and save it where you can find it.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\SharedTaskScheduler]

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Then, locate fixme.reg and it.

You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?".

Answer 'Yes' and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

Reboot in normal mode.

Problem solved?
No joy I am afraid. Very Frustrating. When I ran the fixme.reg file the prompt I received was "Do you wish to add….." rather than Do you wish to merge….." as your script suggested. Not sure if that is significant ?? Any other ideas?
