Firefox homepage hijack

Hi,
I use Firefox to browse the web (under Windows XP). I've probably stupidly installed something I shouldn't have done and now I'm being hijacked. My company intranet was my homepage. Beginning this week instead of going to the intranet, it goes to a site called information.com (although the address still has the intranet address). I changed my homepage to somthing else. This new homepage is OK, but I still cannot access the intranet as I keep being redirected to information.com. I've cleared the cache, cookies, temporary internet files and run two different spyware programs (Spy Sweeper and Spybot). No spyware was found and the problem persists. Can anyone help?

I'm pretty sure that my company uses it as they sometimes remotely take over this machine to install stuff etc. Also my laptop has Dameware Mini Remote in it's HijackThis log too and Firefox has not been hijacked on that. I'll try and confirm it later on. Thanks

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.



Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.


Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED PROFILE USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.


Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot Normal Mode and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Hi, thanks for the help again. I followed the instructions and deleted everything from the various Temp directories and the temporary internet files.

However, the problem remains. I have no trouble accessing any webpage with Firefox apart from my company's intranet page. When I do try and access it, there is a long pause (maybe 30 seconds) before the website information.com appears.

If I make something else my homepage (e.g. www.bbc.co.uk) and then go to my homepage, the correct website appears. This may mean it is not a homepage hijack, just the intranet page. I thought it was a homepage problem because the intranet used to be the homepage.

Apart from the hijacking of the intranet page, the computer appears to be behaving normally. No slower than normal anyway. Here is the latest HijackThis log.

I have an IT department but they refuse to help as it is Firefox and therefore not Microsoft… Do you think it could be anything to do with the Dameware Mini Remote? I ran HijackThis on my laptop and it wasn't listed there. It's also not listed under the Add / Remove Programs menu on the desktop (the one with the problem). Thanks

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"



Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

I carried out your instructions but the problem remains.

I notice that the line "R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://intranet/" is still in the log file despite checking it and clicking Fix Checked. Is this right (I definately checked it)?

The computer behaves normally apart from accessing the intranet site.

You need To disable SpySweeper:it can stop our fix.

Open it click >Options over to the left then >program options >Uncheck "load at windows startup".
Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
Uncheck "home page shield".
Uncheck 'automaticly restore default without notifiction".




Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Hi,
Maybe we have different versions of SpySweeper but I couldn't find the "load at windows startup" or "automatically restore default without notification" options. It could be our IT department's way of stopping people from intefering with the set up.
I did uncheck the "home page shield" option and checked / fixed the relevant bits in HijackThis. After rebooting the problem persists. The computer behaves normally apart from the usual hijacking of the intranet site when using Firefox.
