Welcome to the forum :wavey:

Do you know what this file might be associated with?

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {de4c112b-7b69-4a00-a104-c7fb0287741a} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ASRe-1.dll

O20 - Winlogon Notify: ASRe-1 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ASRe-1.dll

I can find no info on it.

If you do not know what it is please do this:

Please go to these free online file checkers:

Kaspersky Online File Scanner

Jotti Online File Scanner

VirusTotal Online File Scanner

And submit this file for a virus scan:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ASRe-1.dll

Let me know the results.

You don't have to try all three. If it comes back as "infected", you can stop there.
:)
Thanks for your quick response! I checked the file and it is infected. Here are the results: Scanned file: ASRe-1.dll - Infected ASRe-1.dll - infected by Trojan-Downloader.Win32.ConHook.aa
That's what I thought, but I wanted to be sure.
:)

Download Killbox from here:

Killbox.zip © Option^Explicit

Unzip it, but don't run it yet.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {de4c112b-7b69-4a00-a104-c7fb0287741a} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ASRe-1.dll

O20 - Winlogon Notify: ASRe-1 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ASRe-1.dll

Then click "Fix checked" & close Hijack This!

Now, run Killbox.

In Killbox select "Delete on Reboot".

Paste the next line into the "Full Path of File to Delete" text box.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ASRe-1.dll

Click the red dot with the white X in it, in the upper right of Killbox, then click "Yes", and "Yes" again.

The machine will reboot.

After the machine reboots, "copy/paste" a new HijackThis! log file into this thread. :)
Thanks for your help. Here's the new HijackThis Log file:

Great.

Just a little "tidying up"….

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {de4c112b-7b69-4a00-a104-c7fb0287741a} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ASRe-1.dll (file missing)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: ASRe-1 - ASRe-1.dll (file missing)

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This!.

Reboot.

You can remove this folder now:

C:\!Killbox

Killbox makes copies of things it removes and places them there.

Your Java could use an update.

The latest version out is jre1.5.0_07

After updating you must remove previous versions via "Add/Remove Programs".

jre1.5.0_07 update link

Popups stopped now?

Securing Your PC After An Attack
Thanks!!! I ran a quick virus scan on the sys32 folder and came up with the following results: ——————————————————————————- KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER REPORT Wednesday, July 05, 2006 11:13:02 AM Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 2 (Build 2600) Kaspersky Online Scanner version: 5.0.83.0 Kaspersky Anti-Virus database last update: 5/07/2006 Kaspersky Anti-Virus database records: 192640 ——————————————————————————- Scan Settings: Scan using the following antivirus database: standard Scan Archives: true Scan Mail Bases: true Scan Target - Folders: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ Scan Statistics: Total number of scanned objects: 5545 Number of viruses found: 1 Number of infected objects: 2 / 0 Number of suspicious objects: 0 Duration of the scan process: 00:04:25 Infected Object Name / Virus Name / Last Action C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\AppEvent.Evt Object is locked skipped C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\DEFAULT Object is locked skipped C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\DEFAULT.LOG Object is locked skipped C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\Internet.evt Object is locked skipped C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SAM Object is locked skipped C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SAM.LOG Object is locked skipped C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SecEvent.Evt Object is locked skipped C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SECURITY Object is locked skipped C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SECURITY.LOG Object is locked skipped C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE Object is locked skipped C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE.LOG Object is locked skipped C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SysEvent.Evt Object is locked skipped C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM Object is locked skipped C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM.LOG Object is locked skipped C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\H323LOG.TXT Object is locked skipped C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\khfcy.exe Infected: Trojan-Downloader.Win32.ConHook.ab skipped C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MsDtc\MSDTC.LOG Object is locked skipped C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MsDtc\Trace\dtctrace.log Object is locked skipped C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msmq\storage\QMLog Object is locked skipped C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ursrrpn.dll Infected: Trojan-Downloader.Win32.ConHook.ab skipped C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WBEM\Repository\FS\INDEX.BTR Object is locked skipped C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WBEM\Repository\FS\INDEX.MAP Object is locked skipped C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WBEM\Repository\FS\MAPPING.VER Object is locked skipped C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WBEM\Repository\FS\MAPPING1.MAP Object is locked skipped C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WBEM\Repository\FS\MAPPING2.MAP Object is locked skipped C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WBEM\Repository\FS\OBJECTS.DATA Object is locked skipped C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WBEM\Repository\FS\OBJECTS.MAP Object is locked skipped Scan process completed. Should I just follow the same killbox technique to get rid of them?
Or do you have any suggestions for Antivirus software. I have Norton Corporate, but apparently it's not doing a good job. Thanks.
These are the only two you need to be concerned about:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\khfcy.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ursrrpn.dll

You could just find them with Windows explorer and delete them.

They may be "hidden". Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these files.

If you cannot find them to remove them, do this:

Copy the contents of the following quote box into Notepad:

attrib -r -s -h C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\khfcy.exe
attrib -r -s -h C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ursrrpn.dll
del C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\khfcy.exe
del C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ursrrpn.dll
pause

Save it to your desktop as kill.bat

Now the kill.bat file. A DOS window will open.

When these commands are complete, you'll get this message:

Press any key to continue . . .

If no errors show in the DOS window, the operation was a success.

Close the DOS window.

As far as AV products go, I'm a "Norton" man my self. Some say it's a "resource hog", but it's not let me down.

There are links to other free AV products here:

Securing Your PC After An Attack

The sad truth is that if you look thru the posts here, about 99% of the people have some sort of AV product active. So having one doesn't grant you immunity - even if it's "updated". Malware evolves so rapidly, it's hard for AV products to keep up.

I would suggest three items to aid in your defense:

Check your browser settings here: Jason's Toolbox

If your browser's security is lacking, you can get infected from just visiting a rogue web site.

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 5000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Switch to another browser, such as Firefox. Links to it are at the "Securing Your PC After an Attack" link above. Alternate browsers are ususally less prone to security breaches. I use Firefox. I only use IE when necessary. Besides, Firefox give's you "tabbed" browsing.

I hope this has been helpful.

Thank you for choosing TomCoyote for your malware removal solutions.
