I need help. I can't figure out why I'm having memory problems when I don't have very much running. All I can figure is there is something out there I didn't invite. Will someone help me?

Hello Kathi,

I see only one infected file detected by Kapersky.
C:\Documents and Settings\Mark\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\J2L3HX82\zp[2].cgi Infected: Exploit.HTML.UrlSpoof.a skipped

Let's do this to delete it.
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose:Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click
  • No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE:If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Please tell me what problems you are experiencing.

Also please go Start =>Run and type ms32info

In the right pane you should see information similar to the following near the bottom:
Total Physical Memory 512.00 MB
Available Physical Memory 198.07 MB
Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB

Please tell me what values you see for the above.

If you open the Windows Task Manager (Ctrl + Alt + Del keys pressed at same time)
Click on the Processes tab and then click on the column heading Mem Usage so that the items are sorted in descending order by Mem Usage.

Please tell me the Image Name and Mem Usage for the first ones so we can see what the Mem Usage hogs are.
My symptom is that when I've been working on the computer, it says my working memory is low (can't remember the exact wording) and that it is going to increase it. My system has also been taking longer to draw, and last week my husband tried to show me how to use a multi-media package to view a humorous clip and a porno movie started playing. Neither one of us claimed it, so I ran Spydoctor and several things were found. Since those got through, I think something else did too. I also have some unwanted stuff loading up at start-up that I could eliminate, but I can't figure out how. I can't uncheck them in MSCONFIG without it telling me I'm in diagnostic mode. Maybe getting rid of ezprint, aol IM, messenger, and some others would free up memory, but how? Anyway… I ran ATF-Cleaner.exe and it freed up a bunch of memory! I use IE for a browser, so I didn't do anything under your browser steps. I went to Start ->Run but there was no ms32info (I even did a search), but I went to System Info and got this: Total Physical Memory 1,024.00 MB Available Physical Memory 482.71 MB Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB I went to Task Mgr and these are the big users: CCAPP.EXE 44,760 K explorer.exe 29,804 K svchost.exe 29,200 K swdoctor.exe 20,136 K CCPROXY.EXE 9,524 K IEXPLORE.EXE 9,196 K (so what is explorer.exe?) ezprint.exe 7,960 K (CCEVTMGR.EXE, CCSETMGR.EXE, spoolsv.exe, sdhelp.exe and others were using 5,000-6,900 K) I don't see anything that shouldn't be there. Does that mean I have a memory leak somewhere or that you got rid of it for me?
Let's get a listing of what is running at Start-up please.

Hello Kathy,

There are some applications you can remove from start-up.

If you don\'t use Windows Messenger, Go to Windows Messenger > Tools > Options > Preferences and uncheck "Run this program when Windows starts"
You can always start it by going to start> programs > Windows Messenger

Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall AOL if you have not done so.

STEP 1.
======
Open HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mmtask] "C:\Program Files\Musicmatch\Musicmatch Jukebox\mmtask.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" –atboottime

If not using AOL anymore check this but it should not be removed if you use AOL.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HostManager] C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\1147405826\ee\AOLSoftware.exe-

After you check these items, close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis, then click on the Fix Checked button on HijackThis.

Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.

Here is an article about memory issues
http://www.microsoft.com/atwork/getstarted/pcproblems.mspx

CCAPP.EXE 44,760 K Norton Antivirus
swdoctor.exe 20,136 K
CCPROXY.EXE 9,524 K Symantec Internet Security Suite

You can see from above that much memory is used from anti-spyware and anti-virus applications.

I did google Norton Antivirus + resource hog and found complaints.
Thanks, Susan528. I learned a lot from you. I hadn't deleted AOL before because it appeared as "AOL UNINSTALLER" and I thought I would be deleting the only chance of uninstalling it. I also realize how much of a memory hog the antivirus software is, but the lesser of two evils… I'm starting to suspect a memory leak with Spyware Doctor. My memory dives after it prompts me to update and then it reopens it. Anyway, thanks for all your work. I really appreciate getting this under control.
Well, yes and no. I'm not getting the message as frequently now (in fact only a couple of times since you walked me through removing some things. I think a lot of my problem must be the amount of memory that SpyDoctor uses. Since I'm not willing to give up this protection, I'm just accepting it. As for the virus that was flagged earlier… I'm starting to question whether there was one at all. My Norton had been up-to-date and after it popped up, I went to other online scans to detect it. Nothing. I had a case like this a few years ago where a free trial checker flagged all kinds of viruses and trojans, but I couldn't validate them. In the earlier case, I formatted the hard drive and started over, then went back to the free trial and ran it again. Guess what… it said I had all kinds. This may sound paranoid, but I think some of the freebies flag non-existent trouble to encourage purchasing it as "better" I think my problem is as resolved as it is going to be. Thank you for all your help with interpretting hijackthis. That is a wonderful tool, if you know how to use it. Thanks again.
Hi KathiMI1,

I am glad things are better. Yes, there are programs that give false positives to goad you into buying them. I do not think Kapersky is one of them. Problem with scans is that results may vary even with reputable ones–some detect different things.
