Hi larry maynard:

Please print, or copy and paste this text into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to review as you work. Please proceed with this fix in the order provided below.

Please download the inf Files by Winhelp from http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf
This will open a text document. Click on File –> Save as….Save it to a conveniently reachable place as My Documents. Right-click on it and and select Install. This will remove all the entries in Trusted Zone.

Please note that if you use Spybot S&D, it will need to be re-imunized
and IE-Spyad will need to be re-installed, after using the INF file.
Please, do not fail to do so, without delay.

Next:

I do not see a Firewall installed. If you are not using one, or if you are using Microsofts built in firewall, I suggest disabling it in Control panel and installing one of these. Do not use two firewalls.

Below you will find a link to Zone Alarm, which has a good free firewall for personal use, another for kerio and a link to sygate. Note that it is not recommended to run two firewalls simultaneously, not even along with the new Microsoft firewall.
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/cata…sku_list_za.jsp
http://www.kerio.com/us/kpf_home.html
http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_pro.htm

Next:
Please go to Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and Uninstall/Remove…..
SpyNoMore

Next:

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Disable SpySweeper:
You have SpySweeper installed. While this is a great program, we need to temporarily disable (not uninstall) the program because it might stop our fix.
  • Open it click >Options over to the left then >program options>Uncheck "load at windows startup"
  • Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
  • Uncheck" home page shield".
  • Uncheck ''automatically restore default without notification".
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable SpySweeper again.

Close all Windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check against each of the following.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&t…lion&pf=desktop
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&t…lion&pf=desktop
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&t…lion&pf=desktop

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SNM] C:\Program Files\SpyNoMore\SNM.exe /startup
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.trymedia.com (HKLM)

Then, click on FIX CHECKED

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them:

C:\Program Files\SpyNoMore\SNM.exe /startup

Exit Explorer, enable hidden files and reboot as normal.

If you were unable to find, or delete any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:
Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.
Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.
Let the system reboot.

Then, please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log and post it into this topic.

Please advise if any problems remain.

Open Control Panel. Click Start>Settings>Control Panel.
Double-click the Internet Options icon.
In the Internet Properties window, click the Programs tab.

Hi Piatan. I did the fix checked, closed all, clicked IE to go to my home page. Bell South.net came up, after a few seconds, changed to http://servedby.advertising.com. Closed out-control panel-Interet Options-properties-programs-reset web&homepage. scan/post log. I would like to have bell south home page. Thanks Piatan, larry g
Hi larry maynard:

Thought we had it that time.

If the problem is showing in Hijack This, I don't see it.

Lets run some online scanners and a Program or two, to see if the problem can be located and possibly dispatched.

Please use the following links to run two, or more of these online Virus Scanners and let them fix whatever they find.

If you are using any of the browsers listed just below, the following online Virus scanning site is compatable.
http://be.trendmicro-europe.com/consumer/h…call_launch.php
If you are using any of these browsers:
Microsoft Internet Explorer
Netscape (6+)
Mozilla (1+)
Firefox (all)
Opera (7.5+)

Internet Explorer users can also use the following links.

When using Trend Micro, be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location, so you can delete it yourself.
TrendMicro HouseCall
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/news.html?id=146100010
Bitdefender and let it delete everything it finds.
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed.

Reboot when done.

Hi larry maynard:

Your Hijack This log still looks to be clean.
Ewido found only tracking cookies, so no help there.

Please install, update, then configure Ad-Aware SE to the following directions. If you already have Ad-Aware SE, be sure to first update it , configure it to do a full systems scan, then run it and let it remove anything it asks about.
Install and how to use Ad-aware SE
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind…showtutorial=48

After using Ad-Aware SE, please reboot, to allow it to finish.

Please download the Spybot S&D program from here Spybot S&D and install it.
  • Select Search for updates.
  • Then select all available updates that are displayed in the white box.
  • Select a download mirror nearest your location.
  • Then select Download updates .
  • Shut down and restart Spybot.
  • Select the Search and destroy icon and click on Check for Problems.
  • Delete/fix anything that spybot lists In RED.

  • Then, please REBOOT, to allow Spybot to finish working.

Please download the free MWAV antivirus tool from here:
    ftp://ftp.microworldsystems.com/download/tools/mwav.exe
Save it to the desktop and run it. Follow the prompts to scan your system for viruses.

Then please post for me the log of infected files from the BOTTOM panel of the scan window.

Please advise if the problem has been resolved.

Hi Piatan, here is the scan from mwave.exe. To remove these threats, a removal tool must be purchased. Do you advise this? My home page problem seems to be fixed, but will these threats not removed, maybe cause the problem again? I was unable to load Ad-aware-SE, blocked by KPF? Right now I'm running an AVG trial anti-virus program. I was given a brand new McAfee Int. Sec. Suite 2006. Which would you reccomend? Thanks very much for your help!!!! larry g
Hi larry maynard:

Well, if it isn't one thing it's another with these firewalls. Malware is bad enough without having to deal with multiple firewall problems.
I can't imagine why KPF would block the download of one of the best (Ad-Aware SE) programs available. Go figure ! I understand McAfee also has some issues with Ad-Aware SE and it is recommended not to use Ad-Aware SE on machines that have McAfee installed.

No, I wouldn't advise paying MWAV for a removal tool, especially since they did not advise what the "Critical Objects" are. I did not know that was an issue, or I would not have advised using MWAV. I do not use, or recommend anything, unless it is totally free.

About AVG Anti-Virus: I have been using AVG (free) for over two years and have no complaints. I would keep and use it, at least for the short term. You say yours is a trial ? Check back at AVG and see if the "free" version is available. I have nothing against McAfee, unless it would be the Ad-Aware issue, but McAfee is not normally free.

Curosity is getting the best of me. When did you notice your Home Page issue had been resolved ? Was it after using some scan, or Program ?

Lets run the following Program and see if it recognizes any "Critical Objects". If so, it should advise what they are and can be removed.

Please run the Panda scan here:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm
Choose to "Disinfect automatically," and follow the prompts. Delete any viruses found, and restart your computer. Please Click on, save report, to be posted into this topic.

If you do not see the "Disinfect automatically" option, disregard that part of the instruction.

Then, please post the Panda Active-Scan report, into this topic.

Please use the [external image: Posted Image] button to reply.
Hi Piatan! Tryed to run Panda scan, [ said: this version was not compatible with this version of Windows.] From post #12: Ad-aware Se blocked by KPF. I didn't know KPF is my firewall? So I clicked on icon to see settings. Un-checked AD block, re-booted, went to Ad-aware site, loaded program, went fine. The first try was my fault for not checking Sunbelt firewall settings! I just didn't think to do that? When I said in Post# 11 that the problem with Bell South as my home page[ might be fixed ] was because, after I loaded Spybot,re-boot to finish Spybot, I then went on line to go back to e-mail to post reply. My home page then was AOL. For some reason I decided to go to Bell South web page, typed it in, page came up, and didn't change now like it had before?? So, went to e-mail, posted reply. The reason I said I was not sure if the [problem] was fixed, was because I didn't [change] my home page to default setting, so, when I went to Bell South page, it was not set as home page, so I didn't know if that might be the reason it didn't change like before? I should have changed the default home page[ like I had done before]to Bell South, to see if problem was fixed?? Why I didn't, I don't know??? The problem is now fixed!!! I hope I didn't make it harder, or to take longer, to find and fix the problem, because I failed to check, or couldn't get all the downloads to work, because of lack of knowedge. I confess to being lost about all the threats and how to find them, in one's computer? So, I thank you very much for all your help!! larry g
Hi larry maynard, you're welcome.
No need to apologize. I would rather take a beating than try to configure some of these programs.

If everything is back to normal, I suggest the following.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if Malware infects a computer with this operating system the Malware can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
http://castlecops.com/postlite7736-.html
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Safe surfing. :wavey:
