Before posting a reply,

Please go to Start - Run… and type
notepad.exe

Hit OK.

Now go to Format and uncheck WordWrap.

Close Notepad.

That will make your HJT log much easier to read. Thanks.

If you still need help with your problem, please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log, then post it here, in this topic . We do need to see a current logfile.

If you are having a specific problem, please advise.


I see neither a firewall, nor an Anti-Virus running. Having one of each is crutial, for every PC operating on the Internet.

Below you will find a link to Zone Alarm, which has a good free firewall for personal use, another for kerio and a link to sygate. Note that it is not recommended to run two firewalls simultaneously, not even along with the new Microsoft firewall.

Thank you very much for your help. I hve installed the AVG and ZoneAlarm and removed the recommended files. I no longer have a specific problem. The computer was running slowly and over the past week I've been running various programs to try to correct the problem. That's how I found HijackThis. Seem to be much better now.

I would suggest to regulary run an Anti-Virus and Trojan Scanner.
If you have none downloaded to your PC, online scanners do a good job.

Next:
Use Cleanmgr to clean temporary files:

1. Click > start > run and type cleanmgr and click OK
2. Scan your system for files to remove.
3. Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
4. Click OK to remove those files.
5. Click Yes to confirm deletion.

If your PC is now operating normally, I recommend the following.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if Malware infects a computer with this operating system the Malware can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

    Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=11150
    -reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

Hello Piatan-
I did not think I would be asking for help again so soon! Everthing seemed to be runnng smoothly. Then I got an error message in Eudora that I couldn't delete an email because the file was locked. I closed and reopened Eudora and got an error message that my spam filter could not load. I decided to reboot and when I did I got the error message- "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: C:\windows\system32\config\system" I used the Restore Console to revert to an earlier restore point.
Now the computer boots up and the desktop appears normally except that the taskbar takes forever to load. I removed Zone Alert and AVG since those were the newest things on there and I thought they might be causing the problem, but it didn't help.

Hi Isaiah:

It is essential for the well being of your PC that it is protected by a firewall and a full time Anti-Virus, with both running at all times.
Any firewall and any Anti-Virus is better than nothing. So please, download and install one of each without delay. Both Zone Alarm and AVG are well respected programs. I have been using both free editions myself for years, with no problems and that's why I do not hesitate to suggest using them.

If you reset System Restore at the time I advised, you could not have gone back very far by using it and the SR point should have been good.

Please protect your PC by downloading and installing the additional protection programs suggested in my last post to you. They do not require any noticable use of system resources and are some of the best protection available. In addition, they are all free, with no strings attached.

Is a slow loading taskbar the only problem you are having, at this time ?
If so, the advice in the following links should not be followed.

Have a look at the two following links, only if you are still getting this alert.
