I have this pesky virus back. Can someone please help me remove it. My computer acts like it is moving through molasses! Thanks!

Please download HiJackThis into its own permanent folder,
example: C:\MyHJT\HJT.exe, C:\Program Files\MYHJT\HJT.exe or C:\MyDocuments\MyHJT\HJT.exe


Double click on it to open it up, hit the Do a system scan and save log button, WordPad or NotePad will open and it will be saved in the folder, copy and paste the entire log into your reply. (use edit > select all > copy > paste it into your reply). MrC

I don't see any evidence of that in your log but did find Zango Toolbar.

Go to your control panels add/remove programs and uninstall Zango Programs if listed.

Close ALL programs down, leaving ONLY HijackThis running - Click Scan and.....
Place a check against the following items:

O3 - Toolbar: Zango Toolbar - {EA0D26BD-9029-431A-86E0-83152D67828A} - C:\Program Files\Zango Programs\Zango Toolbar\ZangoTB.dll

Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Delete these files/folders if found:

C:\Program Files\Zango Programs\Zango Toolbar\ZangoTB.dll<---file

C:\Program Files\Zango Programs<---folder.

Here's the fix for Vundo:

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop from the link below:
http://www.atribune..../click.php?id=4
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
  • You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
  • When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a fresh HJT log, MrC

I followed your directions. However, I couldn't get the fix vundo to run. It would advance to where I clicked OK for it to run, but it never open to run the scan.

I also have a pesky security alert that keeps popping up and won't go away. I have Norton but did not renew. Now the symantec message pops up every 5 seconds to tell me my computer is at risk...virus protection is turned off...open norton product to resolve...then there is a check in a box that states: to prevent duplicate security status alers, use my existing Norton product alerts and turn off redundan Windows Security Center alers. (Recommended) I uncheck the box and click ok but it returns with the same maddening message. I have DSL with MSN/Qwest. How can I remove this pesky and maddening box for good? Thank you.

Try to run it again, but this time don't check the "Run Vundo Fix as a task"

Click scan first and if it finds anything click Remove

I don't mean to intrude, but this page may help:

Symantec Security Alert states that "Your computer is at risk . . ."

It doesn't have a way to "turn it off", unless you renew and update the definitions (if I'm reading it right).

It seems you may be skirting the issue.

I have Norton but did not renew.

It appears the issue is your virus defintions are "out of date". An "out of date" antivirus is a liability (giving you a false sense of security), and not an asset.

You should strongly consider renewing it, or finding a replacement, IMHO.

In today's Cyberworld a good, updated, working antivirus and firewall are "a must".

Heavens! I would never think you have intruded. Thanks so much for your advice. I thought that MSN had it's own firewall protection. I love Norton but thought I didn't need to renew because of the shields MSN provides and I run Webroot every night. Thanks for those links! :D Cindy

I ran the VundoFix and nothing looked like the Virus was there. I cannot copy and past the results but the first one looked like this: C://WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/hhkmp.bak1, then a bak2, then a tmp and next an ini, so it doesn't look like the virus is there. The reason I thought I had it again was the Norton security quaratine threw up a box that said my system was infected with the virus again. My computer was running like sludge and programs took forever to run. I still have Norton running (it is the whole system package) just not an updated version. However, when it was update was when I got the virus the first time. Brother! :blink: My programs are running smoothly again. Can the Zangotoolbar do that to my system? Sorry I've taken so long between emails. I've had my darling grandkids off and on during the time we've emailed. I've got 9 of them! :o Thanks, Cindy

I take it that the computers running OK now?

I would like you to do this for me though.....

Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Reboot and post a fresh HJT log so we can take another look, MrC

anti virus program, even after doing that I would be very careful. Don't click on any executables in e-mails or any other links that you're not sure of.
Watch your surfing habits, don't click on or download anything you're not sure of. Don't install a program that hasn't been recommended by a reputable organization.
