Hi virus virgin:

Please print, or copy and paste this text into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to review as you work.

You are running HijackThis from its zipped archive; please create a new folder for it and unzip the program into it. It is very important you do this before anything else!

Close all Windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check against each of the following.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {77701e16-9bfe-4b63-a5b4-7bd156758a37} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {ACB1E670-3217-45C4-A021-6B829A8A27CB} - (no file)

Then, click on FIX CHECKED

Next:
Please use the following links to run two, or more of these online Virus Scanners and let them fix whatever they find.

If you are using any of the browsers listed just below, the following online Virus scanning site is compatable.
http://be.trendmicro-europe.com/consumer/h…call_launch.php
If you are using any of these browsers:
Microsoft Internet Explorer
Netscape (6+)
Mozilla (1+)
Firefox (all)
Opera (7.5+)

Internet Explorer users can also use the following links.

When using Trend Micro, be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location, so you can delete it yourself.
TrendMicro HouseCall
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/news.html?id=146100010
Bitdefender and let it delete everything it finds.
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan

Note any thing that can't be fixed. Reboot when done.

Next:
Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido Anti-Malware:
  • If you already have Ewido Anti-Malware, it is not necessary to download it, but please do update the program, before using.
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK.
  • From the main Ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes, the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"
  • Exit Ewido. DO NOT run a scan yet.
Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".

  • Then, return to Ewido.
  • Click on Scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
Save the report to your desktop, to be posted here later.

Close Ewido and reboot into Normal Mode.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
    Ewido manual updates

The trial version of Ewido works like a full featured version for 14 days, after that the only features that will not work are, autoupdate and realtime protection. It will still be able to be updated with the link above and be used to scan and remove undesirables.

Then, please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log and post it into this topic, along with the Ewido report.

Please advise if any problems remain.

Please use the [external image: Posted Image] button to reply.
hi thanks for your response,
Unfortunately things have not got any better.

Unzipped "hijackthis" and ran the scan. Deleted the items you suggested.
all went to plan.

Tried to scan with your recomentations, firstly with "Bitdefender" and secondly with"etrust antivirus".
On both occasions, during the scan, my computer shut down and it took a good 10 minutes before i was able to restart.
Then downloaded ewido, and ran in safe mode as you instructed. Manged to get to 98.5 % of scan before
computer shut down again. Therefore unable to get log. Only 1 virus had been picked up by this scan.

Anyway, this is my latest "hijackthis" log…..

I hope this might give you some ideas of the problems

Hi virus virgin:

The first thing that comes to mind is, this may be an overheating issue, not so much malware, Viruses, etc…

Unplug the PC from electricity. Remove the Internet connection, Cable lines, telephone lines etc.

Be sure you are well grounded, before removing the PCs outer case. Check the fans to be sure they are clear and working. Check for an accumulation of dust inside the case and especially inside and around the fans. Toothpicks and Q Tips can be used for cleaning purposes, along with a small vacume hose and some canned air. Clean the inside and outside of the case also.
Over heating will kill a system just as you describe, but will usually take even longer to get it going again. Had the same problem myself recently, with temperatures reaching the mid 90s and a clogged fan.

If over heating is the problem, I'm surprised that Ewido ran long enough to get 98.5 % of scan, since it takes so long to finish.

Lets get Hijack This into a folder of its own, before continuing.

When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it cannot be run from a Zip file or from Temporary folders because the backups will be deleted. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

Then, try those online scanners again and if there are no problems doing that, run Ewido again, to produce and save a log. If the online scanners give you a problem running them, forget about running Ewido, for now.

Then, run Hijack This. Scan and copy the log and post it here, in this topic, along with the Ewido report.

Please use the [external image: Posted Image] button to reply.
Hi Piatan,

Great advice, a good clean of the fans, and no more drop outs… so
ran Ewido and this is the report

what do you reckon from here
Hi virus virgin:

At least we got your PC going again, with a cleaning. Looks like Ewido dispatched a hijacker and a few cookies.

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own.

We are getting ready to delete your temp and Temporary Internet files, so having Hijack This in a Temp directory means that those files will be gone, with no chance of recovering them.

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.

Do not use it yet.

First, reboot into safe mode.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Then, please reboot into Normal Mode:

If everything seems to be back to normal, I suggest the following.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if Malware infects a computer with this operating system the Malware can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

Safe surfing. :wavey:
Hi Piatan…. Whoops made a bit of a major error here…. while trying to logon as the administrator have some how managed to delete my usual log on (can't find it anywhere). Obviously all my files etc are now missing too. my system never prompted me to this deletion, however i'm somewhat reluctant to re boot my computer as i don't want to loose all the files, data etc assosicated with my usual log on. I did try to make a new user account, with the same name but i was prompted that "the specified local group already exists" Is there anyway i can retrieve my usual log on????? Sorry for troubling you regards :dumb: Virus Virgin :
Hi virus virgin: Go to Start>Settings and click on Control Panel, then find and click on USER ACCOUNTS. Your logon name should be there, unless you have removed it.
Hi Piatan, That log-in problem just was not that easy, however have managed to get user name re-established and everything is just wonderful. Thank-you so much for all the help and advice…. all systems are now go keep up this great work thanks again Virus virgin :wavey: :wavey: :wavey:
