I have and old window 98 system in Thailand. Last year one son loaded a lot of games. Other son uses it to chat and share files, mainly in Thai language. It has a history of having hot keys mixed around, but solved after ZA download including malware scan. I am now using the basic free protection and it registers attackes every few seconds.

Currently, explorer windows frequently hang and won't close even on shutdown. ending the task will often hang the computer. (frequently on boardgamegeek)

Using MS system information tools, I noticed in the startup "mswspl" loading Temp/run.exe and searched the net, ending up in your site. I would much appreciate your advice (but understand you will be away for a week soon.)

I downloaded and ran the spybot you recommended with updates, and the new adaware with updates. I just subscribed to gmail, and hope that these programs have not invalidated their use agreement, however I still can get mail on my old address, which seems to be a requirement of this site.

Here is the log after all the fixes, the run.exe still shows in the system info, I have not checked the other problems:

Well while the avg downloads, I'll update on the system. I was browsing a lot of windows on MS update to check out what is new I might need. When I finished browsing and closed the windows, the last(first) 2 stuck. I tried log-off user, and end task came up without a program title I clicked end task and a second one appeared for the other window. then the screen returned to normal with the hung windows. I broke my internet connection, and the disconnect window hung (cursor showed as vertical double ended arrow over this. with a couple more clicks on the hung windows, they also behaved the same, then a blue screen.) I hit the on button instead of reset and got a small preparing to hibernate window come up with the blue screen gone, which I have never seen on this computer before.) then I reset and waited for the checkdisk to clear. ran another adaware scan which was clean. and found you message. BTW the update site says THAI enabled W98 is no longer supported, but has a download site with individual updates available, but no info on download sequence, whether they are already installed, and no cumulative updates. I may need your advice on how to update. Well the avg has downloaded now. More later.

Ok. about 10000 files scanned and one trojan downloader deleted. (Downlaoder.Swizzor.AF - C2Media/setup.exe)

System info - IE - cache objects shows:
{DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} Damaged 1,0,0,5 http://download.game...aploader_v5.cab

ppctlcab Not Available 5,6,3,7 http://ppupdates.ca....er/ppctlcab.cab

... IE - File versions
wsock32n.dll File not present Not Available Not Available Not Available

mswspl is still there.

I forgot to mention that when I downloaded the adaware today the checksum for the update refused to pass, so I had to download the updates from the web site, but that went smoothly.

Also, I forgot to try to empty the recycle bin before rebooting, but it looks empty now.
Another point is I am getting random clicks from my speakers ever minute or so.

Well, what happened is that after the ATF download and clicking to empty all (with this window open this time), I noticed a lot of modem activity on the taskbar. I opened the connection window and saw there was incoming data. Opened ZA and saw that rundll32.exe is cleared for trusted and internet access (maybe used by one of the new programs?) Then I disconnected. I got a small window stating Tapisrv had performed an illegal operation. That window hung, as well as my connection window, and I did an edn task which did correctly identify the task, but had to do a system reset any way plus the checkdisk screen. The above is taken after tose events....

I will now have to remember all my old passwords.....

What's next?

Its probably what's good thats missing (that is, some program updates?). Any way, what would be causing the modem activity? Am I visible, or are some programs just checking for updates? Why the hanging?

Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org , click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

C:\WINDOWS\system\rmrecon.exe

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.

I'm not sure Microsoft is supporting W98 for updates any longer. You can try Scandisk and defrag and see if that will help. Other then that, I don't have any other suggestions.

Not for 98 Thai enabled. However it may be the IE 6.0 needs moving up to 6.1 plus latest patch. My older Explorer/Outlook 5 was much more stable but it reached a point of forced upgrade. If I am clean, I may try. Is there a forum for w98 support that could guide me? From MS it sounds like 6.1 is different in access method and maybe the websites have been changing because of it? I have really appreciated your help, even if the job can't quite be completed here.
