hello i'm new and was wondering if anyone is able to help me with this crazy problem. a couple of months ago my dad's pc started redirecting his browser to a porn site everytime we logged off/shutdown. a friend told me about hijackthis and i installed and ran it, painstakingly going through the log myself (i'm not that familiar with computers so i was really careful not to delete anything that i shouldn't have). thankfully i got it right and got rid of the problem. dad has norton anti-virus on his pc. i told him to change to NOD32 as a friend told me this was better than norton. unfortunately dad never did this and the problem has come back and is even WORSE. - same redirection to porn site when logging off/shutting down - i can't open the original hijackthis program. when i double click on it, it is empty. it is saved as a zip file? so i have tried to extract it and save it in another part of the computer in another folder. doesn't save and the new folder i created to save it in isn't even there. - i have tried to download hijackthis from several other safe sites. it downloads to be saved. and i make sure it is being saved into a folder on the c drive. but when the run button comes up nothing happens. i go to open it where it should have been saved and nothing is there. the folder it was saved to isn't even there. it's completely dissapeared. - if i try to download hijackthis from the same site again, it gets blocked completely. the save/install window doesn't even come up. - if i try to download ANY spyware removal/virus protection the same thing happens. the folder dissappears after the first attempt, then any further attempts to download just get blocked. - now norton isn't even working. when i log on a window comes up saying norton isn't working and needs to download something, but i get blocked trying to download anything. - if i make more than about 5 attempts to download any safe anti-spyware/spyware removal software the browser stops working and i get the "page cannot be displayed" screen. it's like whatever spyware/problem thats got into the pc is now blocking me from being able to do anything to try and fix it. i've tried system restore, safe mode, attempting to download all the safe spyware removal software. won't let me do it. nothing seems to make the problem go away. i have a ton of stuff on dad's pc and really don't want to have to wipe everything and re-install everything. can anyone help? much appreciated if you can! kind regards, erin.
Welcome to the forum, Erin :wavey:

Try this:

on one of the links below:

Hijack This! (© Merijn) at tools.radiosplace.com

Hijack This! (© Merijn) at spywarewarrior.com

Choose "Save target as", then give it a bogus name (such as "friday.exe").

Some malware recognizes the threat that HijackThis! poses, and block it's usage.

By giving it a "new name", you should be able to bypass that.

If it works, do this:

Run it.

Click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

DO NOT "FIX" ANYTHING WITH IT YET!!!
FIXING THE WRONG THING COULD RENDER YOUR SYSTEM INOPERABLE!!!

Reply to this thread, and "copy/paste" the ENTIRE CONTENTS of the log file into this thread.

:)
yay!! it worked!! it still wouldn't save in folders with bogus names, but for some reason hijackthis would only download as a temporary file, and it was hidden, but i managed to find it and save it in a folder with a bogus name and it has saved and i've backed it up too. thank you!! here is the log: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 9:25:55 PM, on 19/05/2006 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MsMpEng.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton Utilities\NPROTECT.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\SPEEDD~1\nopdb.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\Logitech\MOUSEW~1\SYSTEM\EM_EXEC.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\sistray.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\khooker.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTHELPER.EXE C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Share-to-Web\hpgs2wnd.exe C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\PROGRA~1\HEWLET~1\HPSHAR~1\hpgs2wnf.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\Program Files\E-nrgyPlus\E-nrgyPlus.exe C:\WINDOWS\SOUNDMAN.EXE C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe E:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Nero\data\xtras\mssysmgr.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\AiO\hp psc 700 series\Bin\hpobrt07.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton CleanSweep\csinsmnt.exe C:\PROGRA~1\HEWLET~1\AiO\Shared\Bin\hpoevm07.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpoipm07.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktopIndex.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktopCrawl.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktopOE.exe C:\DO NOT DELETE!!!!\HijackThis.exe O2 -

I expected to see a log riddled with malware….

However, yours is surprisingly clean.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!
Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [E-nrgyPlus] C:\Program Files\E-nrgyPlus\E-nrgyPlus.exe

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Find and delete:

C:\Program Files\E-nrgyPlus <— FOLDER

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode.

See if you can do this:

Please download and run Spybot-Search&Destroy and Ad-Aware; they are the standard programs for finding and cleaning malware off your system. Here are links to both programs, and instructions for their use.

Get Spybot - Search & Destroy from Spybot Search and Destroy
(This is the NEW Version 1.4)
Get AdAware SE Personal from Lavasoft
(This is the NEW Build 1.6)

Download and install these programs if you don't already have them. If you do have them, make sure they are UPDATED AND CONFIGURED AS DESCRIBED here:

Configure Adaware

Configure Spybot

Reboot after running each program.

Please try at least one of these free online virus scans of your system:

Trend-Micro Housecall
Put on 'Autoclean' and delete what it can't clean.

Panda Activescan
Accept default settings.

Etrust Security Advisor
Choose 'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful.

Reboot after each scan.

Then "copy/paste" a new HijackThis! log file into this thread.

Then give me a "progress report" (how the system is acting).
:)
ok i followed your directions carefully step by step.

spybot and adaware picked up a few things but the problem seems to be with trying to install/run/save them in the first place. this was happening before. to get spybot and adaware i had to open it so it would save to a temporary file, then retrieve the temp file and save it in a proper folder myself. wouldn't let me do it any other way. if i hit the install/run button nothing happens.

when i reboot these windows come up:

E-nrgyPlus is back. as with the redirection to the porn-site.

oops sorry  it says "missing or incorrect command line parameters" i deleted e-nrgyplus folder before i rebooted and did the hijack log which maybe why it's not showing up. i've run search and destroy and adaware again which picked up some more files. porn site thing seems to be fixed ok now. so it may have done the trick. i'm just wondering about the problem with installing new programs. i tried to download trend-microhousecall and panda activescan. both wouldn't run or install or save in a folder. any thoughts?
Do you get that error at every boot now? Your active-x controls may not be configured correctly to let the online scans install/run. I'll have to check that out and get back to you later ("later" would have to be late this evening, or early tomorrow).
no. i've been trying to fix this all last night and all day today. porn sites keep coming back. i can't seem to install anything. i can run spyblocks and hijackthis, which removes the porn thing. but i can't download a firewall. tried and tried and tried. and i think that maybe why the spyware keeps coming back.

Let's dig a little deeper.

Run Hijack This!.

Click on Open Misc Tools section

To the right of Generate Startuplist log, there are two boxes.

Check them both, then click Generate Startuplist log.

i think i have had a bit of a breakthrough. i was able to download AVG by clicking on run, rather than save. this saves it into a temporary folder that i can retrieve in a search and copy and save into my own folder. i ran hijackthis again and took out the e-nryPlus.exe, then i rebooted. did a scan with avg, which picked up a virus as well as some infected files and trojans. rebooted and ran hijackthis again. and it's all going well!! :) for some reason it just refused to do anything with trend-micro housecall, panda or etrust security advisor. regardless of making the adjustments to the activex controls. for some reason avg was retrievable. so i've got the avg virus protection/firewall free trial protecting very well. norton seems to have been uninstalled. but an error screen comes up when i reboot from symantec telling me to uninstall norton completely, but when i try to locate norton to do this it's just vanished somewhere else where i can't find it. anyway, here's the latest hijackthis log: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 10:59:52 PM, on 20/05/2006 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MsMpEng.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgamsvr.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgupsvc.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgemc.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton Utilities\NPROTECT.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\SPEEDD~1\nopdb.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Logitech\MOUSEW~1\SYSTEM\EM_EXEC.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SOUNDMAN.EXE C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Share-to-Web\hpgs2wnd.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTHELPER.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\HEWLET~1\HPSHAR~1\hpgs2wnf.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\khooker.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\sistray.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgcc.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Nero\data\xtras\mssysmgr.exe E:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\AiO\hp psc 700 series\Bin\hpobrt07.exe C:\PROGRA~1\HEWLET~1\AiO\Shared\Bin\hpoevm07.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpoipm07.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktopIndex.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktopCrawl.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktopOE.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Erin Carnachan\My Documents\HijackThis.exe O2 - "Fix" this line with HijackThis!:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DevconDefaultDB] C:\WINDOWS\READREG

Reboot to see if that error disappears.

Then please follow my previous instructions about making/posting a STARTUP LIST LOG.
