Hi Susan!
well..*scratches head*..i did delete MS antispyware & update & install Defender.
also have java 1.5-06 downloaded, 2 diff. size downloads, cant find java installer!
1.5-04 was deleted.
also...02-BHO:nothing came back & also 016-DPF: cafeefac.
so...disabled tea timer....re-deleted items again,along with MS anti spy & old version of java.
did reboot & scan.

Hello Susan!
did some fine tuning & cleaning. after couple re-boots...spyfalcon 3.1 & online security guide & security troubleshooting adware/virus came back. used windows search assistant to find them. all were shortcuts, & deleted using same ~sheeww~
uninstalled whatever Java apps i had...reboot..installed fresh download...reboot...ran "java check" & came out ok.
then...ran new HJT test.....

But you deleted short-cuts thank goodness!

Your last hijackthis log appears to be clean. I do not know what all Microsoft Works entails so I would hesitate to tell you to delete/uninstall it.

It sounds like you are getting into this cleaning up! Maybe you would like to join our classroom?

Please do the following though.

STEP 1.
======
Cleanmgr
To clean temporary files:

• Go > start > run and type cleanmgr and click OK
• Scan your system for files to remove.
• Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
• Click OK to remove those files.
• Click Yes to confirm deletion.

STEP 2.( Windows XP only)
======
Prefetch Folder
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\
Delete All files in this folder but not the Prefetch folder

STEP 3.
======
System Restore for Windows XP
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

• Turn off System Restore.
• On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
• Click Properties.
• Click the System Restore tab.
• Check Turn off System Restore.
• Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore.

• On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
• Click Properties.
• Click the System Restore tab.
• UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
• Click Apply, and then click OK.

STEP 4.
======
DON’T BECOME OVERCONFIDENT WITH ANTIVIRUS APPLICATIONS INSTALLED!!!

Stay up to date on security patches and be extremely wary of clicking on links and attachments that arrive unbidden in instant messages and e-mail.

• Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Hey Susan! *waves* no...I'm the one that thanks you! Very,Very Much! *bends on knee & (smooch) hand* couldnt have..wouldnt have..known where or what to start with! yeah *tilts head* I do get into tech stuff! classroom sounds really good but..not sure if i have the time for that, or to help others. would be nice to know tho! already have done everything you just suggested. except download spyware blaster. I keep alll apps updated weekly. AVG daily. even clean prefetch folder monthly! *sticks thumbs undr arm pits & chest out* luckily *knock on wood* thats 3rd virus in over 4 yrs. not bad, I think. again....Thanks ever so much for being patient & helping me This site is very excellent! I would like to double-check something please. That infection changed and I want to make sure that we fixed everything.

Please do the following:

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter



This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.


IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this:

Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

Please run Option 1 again and post (reply) with the results in next reply.

Disable Microsoft Windows Defender:
We need to disable your Microsoft Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

• Open Microsoft Windows Defender. Click Start, Programs, Windows Defender
• Click on Tools, General Settings.
• Under Real-time protection options, unselect the Turn on real-time protection check box
• Click Save

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {f79fd28e-36ee-4989-aa61-9dd8e30a82fa} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gcasServ] "C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasServ.exe"

Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

You have Windows Defender so you don't need anything related to Microsoft AntiSpyware
Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them if it exists:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\<==folder
Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Post back (reply) with Option 1 results, and a fresh HijackThis log

Good Work! You got rid of those lingering SpyFalcon registry entries.

I still see one entry referring to old java version.

Maybe this with will help. Link has been updated from what I previously had.

Updating Java:

• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
• Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
  It should have next icon next to it:
  Select it and click Remove.
• Then Download and install the newest version from here:http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Please post a fresh hijackthis and let's see if that java entry is gone.

not sure why java keeps showing up as old app. have deleted "04" install twice now &
installed "05" update same. *shrugs* seems to be gone now tho.

Good work! Let's just clear those restore points so that you will not restore to an earlier point and get those registry entries back. Just follow those recommendations that I gave you earlier to help keep you from becoming infected.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

• Turn off System Restore.
• On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
• Click Properties.
• Click the System Restore tab.
• Check Turn off System Restore.
• Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore.

• On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
• Click Properties.
• Click the System Restore tab.
• UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
• Click Apply, and then click OK.

I have copies of program files, docs & settings, (mainly the i386 file for windows re-install), & My docs folder. Was burned once & didnt have any back-ups. that wont happen again! learned my lesson the hard way! *grins* for a few $$, bought external drive for back- ups. again....Thanks for all your help! will pass this site along to others.
