Baseline: Home page hijacked by google/dell

I purchased a PC from Dell Outlet a week ago.
Apparently my home page is locked onto this URL
http://www.google.com/ig/dell?hl=en&client…-inc&channel=us
The simple manual changing doesn't do anything. It comes back to this address setting not matter what.

I downloaded and ran the HijackThis program with the box on line 64 (log) checked.
The line R0 does not get removed. Am I doing something wrong or am I supposed to do something additional?

The line actually shows the Start Page as www.dell.com not the URL above.
There are no other entries related to google or dell that I could see.
Also checked my Registry and don't see any HKey LM run setting related to above.

PS- I hope I did this correctly. Wasn't sure if I was supposed to attach the log file contents this way or as a file someplace else.

I may be able to help…

I checked your log for malware, and none was found. :thumbup:

I see you have Norton Internet Security 2006 / Antivirus 2006.

So do I.

It comes with "Homepage protection". I think that may be what is happeneing to you. It's protecting changes to your homepage and not telling you.

Let's check that angle out.

on the Norton Internet Security Icon in the system tray (looks like a cookie with a black grid in it), and choose "Open Norton Internet Security"

At the top of the Norton Internet Security window, choose "Options" then "Norton Antivirus".

In the middle/left of the page that pops up choose "Home page protection"

In the next window that pops up is how Norton handles your Home page protection.

I have mine set on:

check next to "Turn home page protection on"

check next to "Block all attempts to change my home page"

check next to "Alert me when my home page loads"

Is the dot next to "Never alert me" checked on that page?

If so, change it to "Alert me when my home page loads"

I remember that I tried to change my homepage, and Norton popped up and alerted me. I had to "Okay" the change before it would let me.

If nothing else works, you should be able to go to that page, turn home page protection off. Then go change your home page to what you want. Then, I'd go back and turn the home page protection back on.

Micah, THANKS! That was it! I guess I should always look for the obvious first. Here I was looking in and risking editing my registry. I actually ran a registry cleaner program recommended on the site and it took out a file that was needed. Luckly I new where to find it to put it back. Thanks a million for you help. David
