Like many others, I have been infected by this iworm_attck_v122.02a and OHPE ver4.12_23 thing. Since I am a complete computer novice, I went searching for help on the internet and found this site. If I'm right, I'm supposed to post to post this HijackThisLog here now…

Thanks for sending your information. We are sorry for the delay in responding. The volunteers here are swamped and unfortunately not all logs get answered as quickly as we'd like.

If you still need help with your problem, please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log, then post it here, in this topic . We do need to see a current logfile.

Please provide a description of the problem.

Please do not edit your Hijack This log. We need to see the entire logfile, with no revisions. If anything is disabled using MSCONFIG, please enable all, before scanning with Hijack This.

Initially, I had a lot of popups, all kind of internet sites that opened without me asking for them and my computer warned me that I was infected with iworm_attck_v122.02a and OHPE ver4.12_23. Also, when I opened my browser, it allways opened this www.safetydefender.com site, allthough it wasn't set to be my homepage. In the mean time, since my previous message, I allready ran several scanners on my computer, and one by one, all these problems seemed to disappear again. And just now, as I started up my computer about 15 minutes ago, I don't experience any of these problems anymore. The only thing that still bothers me now is that my computer works slower than it is supposed to be. I hope this problem can be solved aswell…

Here is my HighjackThis Log:

Hi outoftheordinary:

Looks like some of the problem is still present and is likely the reason for the slowness. Please run the complete fix, since we cannot know for certain which parts of the infestation are still present.

You look to be running two full time Anti-Virus programs (etrust and AVG).
It is not recommended to do so, as they can conflict with each other and result in less protection, rather than more. The recommendation is to UNINSTALL one AV program in Add/Remove Programs and use only one full time AV.

Next:

If the following is your Internet Service Provider, please do not fix the 017 Hijack This entry.
However if it is not your ISP, then it should be fixed with HJT.

017 Removal and Internet Connection is lost.

To restore Internet.
This is the most important reason for having HJT in its own folder.
Since you haveHijackThis in its own folder, any entry fixed with Hijack This can be restored from the HJT backups folder. It is as simple as doing the following.

Open HijackThis |Click Config |Click Backups | click on those 017 entries | click Restore.

Please print, or copy and paste this text into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to review as you work. Please review this text carefully, before beginning.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Please do not run it yet.

Download roguescanfix.exe, and save it to your desktop.
Double click roguescanfix.exe to install it.

Please do not run it yet.

Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido Anti - Malware:
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • From the main Ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes, the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"
  • Exit Ewido. DO NOT run a scan yet.
If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 installed, follow these download and setup instructions. Also check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup

Again, do NOT run a scan yet.

Open the roguescanfix folder, and doubleclick run.bat.
Your desktop and icons will disappear and then reappear again, this is normal.
Wait till te message "Completed script execution" appear, then click OK.
Click "Exit" to close BFU.
Click "OK" to start the SpywareQuake/Spyfalcon uninstaller, after that click "uninstall".

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

O2 - BHO: Nothing - {b0398eca-0bcd-4645-8261-5e9dc70248d0} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp7C01.tmp (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Companion\Installs\cpn\yt.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

The following are optional fixes:

If you do not know and trust the following, it can be fixed with HJT.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.2link.be/

Then, click on FIX CHECKED.

While remaining in SAFE MODE:

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them, if found:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp7C01.tmp

For the following, do an ALL FILES SEARCH and delete it.
ALCMTR.EXE

Exit Explorer, but DO NOT REBOOT.

While remaining in SAFE MODE:

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Your desktop and icons will disappear and then reappear again — this is normal.
Wait for the tool to complete and Disk Cleanup to finish — this may take a while; please be patient.

Next, run Ad-aware and perform a full scan. Remove everything found.

Now open Ewido Anti - Malware
  • Click on Scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives. You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one. If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
  • Close Ewido
Next go to Start -> Control Panel, click Display -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop -> Web -> Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Restart your computer in normal mode.

Run the Panda online virus scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open…click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Finally, restart your computer once more, and please post a new HijackThis log as well as the log from the Ewido scan and the log from the smitRem tool, which will be located at C:\smitfiles.txt.

Let us know if any problems persist.

I was able to follow your instructions untill the step in witch I'm supposed to reboot my computer in safe mode. This doesn't seem to work. Pushing F8 during startup makes no difference in the startup process.
Don't know if you need it at this stage, but I'll add it anyway, my HJT Log:

No, if you were not able to go any farther, after not being able to boot into safe mode, the fix has not proceeded nearly far enough and the Malware is still on your PC. We will have to try another method for getting into safe mode.

After you have found a method that will allow you into safe mode, re-boot and then begin the fix again, from the beginning.

The following link will provide you with an optional method for booting into Safe Mode.
Please use the method described for your particular Operating System.

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…src=sec_doc_nam

If you have problems doing anything after getting into SAFE MODE, do the following.

After booting in "safe mode", push these three keys at the same time:

The task manager appears on the screen.

Click on the Applications tab, then click New task.

Then click on Browse. You can then go to the Program needed.

Good luck. :D
Hi there, I did as you instructed. After I found a way to reboot in safe mode, I encountered no more problems to do this. Only remark I have: after having done the roguescanfix, I should have pushed the "OK" button to start the SpywareQuake/Spyfalcon uninstaller. But the computer wanted to run another uninstaller, theMedia-Codec 4.0 uninstaller. Because I wasn't sure I should uninstall this program, I pushed "cancel" instead of "ok".

At this time, I can't tell if any problems persist, since I didn't encounter any problems anymore the last few days. I will now give my new HJT log, my Ewidoscan log and the smitRem tool log. Allthough you didn't ask it, I will also give my Panda scan Report.

Hi outoftheordinary:

Your Hijack This log looks to be clean.

If there are no continuing problems, I suggest the following.

If you are not using a Firewall, it is essential that you do so.
Note that it is not recommended to run two firewalls simultaneously, not even along with the new Microsoft firewall.

Below you will find a link to Zone Alarm, which has a good free firewall for personal use, another for kerio and a link to sygate (which are not free).

http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/cata…sku_list_za.jsp
http://www.kerio.com/us/kpf_home.html
http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_pro.htm

Then, please boot into Safe Mode.

1) Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder and delete all the files that you find there.
Do this for all Usernames.

2) Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temp and delete all the files that you find there.
Do this for all Usernames.

3) Go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options and under Temporary Internet files, click on Delete Files…
Check the box to the left of 'Delete all offline content' and then click on OK. Also, delete "COOKIES".

4) Boot into Normal Mode.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if Malware infects a computer with this operating system the Malware can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
http://castlecops.com/postlite7736-.html
So how did I get infected in the first place?
