I am using HP Compaq nx 6120 notebook with Win XP Pro SP2. I’m using AVG free 7.1.385 antivirus which I update regularly. Of late I’m getting the following error when I do a full system scan ‘Partition Table(MBR) – Reading error’. The boot sector of the disk is ok on the scan. I don’t have any partitions on my hard drive. It’s only C drive that is present. I contacted AVG & was advised to delete all temporary files, run the scan disk utility & scan again. I followed the instructions but the same error appears again. AVG says that it’s a system error & not a problem with their antivirus. Please advise.
I found an article at the AVG forum……
Open up your My Computer then right click on the Local Disk C: drive and select Properties. Next select the Tools tab and click the button in the Error Checking area labeled Check Now. Select the option "Automatically fix file system error…" and click the Start button. It will advise you that it can't check it now but do you want to check on the next system startup and select Yes. Restart the computer so it can test the drive.

Now open the AVG Test Center and press the F3 key to have it check if that resolved the error or not.

Thnx Juliet… :)

I'll bet "Romeo" feels blessed to have you around… ;)

Unfortunately, drameet, I have little expertise in this area.

I "Googled" this:

MBR error

Other than that, I'm afraid I won't be much help…
:(
I can't promise anything other than I'll give it my best…

Run Hijack This!.

Click on Open Misc Tools section

To the right of Generate Startuplist log, there are two boxes.

Check them both, then click Generate Startuplist log.

"Copy/paste" the startuplist log into this thread.

Anytime you start getting disk read errors, it can be a sign of impending disk failure. I would start keeping backups (on CD, thumbdrive, whatever) of anything on the machine you feel is important. Other than that, I'm at a loss. Repairing the MBR (Master Boot Record) is not anything I would attempt. I wish I could offer a better solution - Unfortunately, I haven't found one. :(
if i may: you might try running checkdisk. start>run> type in chkdsk /f at the prompt select Y to run at next reboot will attempt to fix disk errors
Thanks dear shelf life. I already did Disk scan but it reports no errors. Something strange. With whatever little knowledge i have i feel there is a MBR encrypting virus which obviously can't be detected after windows boots. Can anybody help me on this. Micah did u find anything abnormal in the start up scan log?
I wish I could say I found something in the log for you to "fix" to eliminate your problem, but I see nothing amiss.
:(

I have links to some free online virus scans if you want a "second opinion" about the possibility of a virus:

Trend-Micro Housecall
Put on 'Autoclean' and delete what it can't clean.

Panda Activescan
Accept default settings.

Etrust Security Advisor
Choose 'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful.

Just a side note:

If you do the Panda Activescan you're supposed to "register" and give an email address before you run the scan. My daughter did that when she ran the scan on a friends PC, and they sent her "junk" email (I considered it SPAM myself) for several weeks AFTER we "unsubscribed".

If it was me, I'd give a bogus email addy (I used [removed] )
