Hi, I have a program in the startup list called dmamq.exe,it shows its command as being c:\windows\system32\damamq.exe,i'm not sure what this program does but i seem to remember a virus being called dmamq, however a search on google doesnt say what this program is or give any information about it..i'm hoping you guys can throw some light onto what it is..its location is software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run…i keep a close eye on my computer and usually anything i dont know i can find on google or some forum, but there is nothing about this.. i'm running xp pro with sp2 fully updated.. thanks for any help you may be able to give
Usuallly, (but NOT "always"!!!) when you Google something like that, and get ZERO hits, it's a bad sign… :(

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Download HijackThis into this folder.

If required a tutorial is here = Hijackthis Folder Tutorial

Links to Hijack This! v 1.99.1:

Hijack This! (© Merijn) at tools.radiosplace.com

Hijack This! (© Merijn) at spywarewarrior.com

Run it from that folder.

Click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

DO NOT "FIX" ANYTHING WITH IT YET!!!
FIXING THE WRONG THING COULD RENDER YOUR SYSTEM INOPERABLE!!!

Reply to this thread, and "copy/paste" the ENTIRE CONTENTS of the log file into this thread.

If it turns out that you have an "infection", I'll move this topic to the appropriate forum.
:)
i thought the same thing,i can usually find things on a quick google, thanks for your swift reply too:)

The "good news" is that on the surface there are no "infections" present. :)

Have you searched for that file to see if it actually is present on your machine?

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking.
Do you have it "disabled" via MSCONFIG?

This entry:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Spyware Cleaner] "C:\Program Files\Spyware Cleaner\SpywareCleaner.Exe" /boot

Is a program with a "dubious" reputation…

See here:

Spyware Cleaner

And your Java is "out of date":

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04\bin\jusched.exe

The "latest and greatest" is jre1.5.0_06
ok ive looked in local machine \software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run and cant see it in there. i belive there is a way to find files etc by typing the name into something and windows will locate it,(yes im still learning about computers) can you tell me what to do ? thanks again
i havent disabled it yet as i wasnt sure what it would do lol,and thanks for the other info re java and spyware cleaner..
spyware cleaner doesnt show as being on my system ,or at least not visable in the program files and i have it set to show all files and folders and it doesnt show on add/remove list,i would think i have removed at some time..so should i check the entry regarding that in the hjt log?
Go to:

Start –> Search

"All files and folders" "More advanced options"

Be sure the boxes next to:

Search system folders

and

Search hidden files and folders

are BOTH checked!

Then type damamq into the "All or part of file name" box, and click "Search"

If found, it will appear on the screen.

It may take a while, so be patient and wait for the search to finish.

If "Spyware Cleaner" isn't anywhere to be found, do this:

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Spyware Cleaner] "C:\Program Files\Spyware Cleaner\SpywareCleaner.Exe" /boot

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot, Make another log file to be certain that entry is gone.
thanks for all your help micah, i have removed the entry for spyware cleaner, and done a search for dmamq as well which came up empty,so i guess its safe to disable this entry in msconfig now,is there anyway to remove it from the startup list or should i just leave it as disabled? and i would just like to say,if you help people as well as you have helped me,then there should be a lot of happy people out there.. u rock!! keep up the good work,i know where to come if i ever get stuck again:)

It's just an "orphaned" entry from an uninstall, presuming "Winpatrol" isn't currently installed. Do you want to remove it, or ignore it?
winpatrol is installed at the moment,is this a program that is ok to use? i try to research any programs i use before putting them on my comp, but as you showed me with spyware cleaner im not always using the best programs..i would like your advice regarding this one..
"WinPatrol" is a good program.

Here's a forum dedicated to it:

WinPatrol

If you (or another user) disabled it via MSCONFIG, re-enable it, UNLESS you had a reason to disable it.

If not, I'd just "leave well enough alone". Maybe Winpatrol has done this itself.
