Hello:

This computer runs slow after the screen saver (original XP screensaver - nothing downloaded) comes on (I have it set to start after 20 minutes of not using the computer) and I try to get back to work on the computer.

I just scanned my computer with the free online spyware scanner thru pcpitstop and it found 5 medium to high risk problems.
I have pasted the results below:

Adware "Odysseusmarketing" found in:
• key "hkey_classes_root \appid\actsetup.dll" value "appid"

Adware "SavingsHound" found in:
• key "hkey_classes_root \s"

Adware "Network1.Popups" found in:
• key "hkey_current_user \software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\internet settings\zonemap\domains\media-motor.net"

P2P "MediaPipe" found in:
• key "hkey_local_machine \software\mediapipe"

Hijacker "WebSearch Toolbar" found in:
• key "hkey_local_machine \software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\moduleusage\c:/windows/downloaded program files/qdow_as2.dll"
• key "hkey_local_machine \software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\shareddlls" value "c:\windows\downloaded program files\qdow_as2.dll"

Below is my HijackThis log:

Should I be concerned? What should I do to take care of the things that PCPitStop found?

Thank you.

Download the trial version of Spy Sweeper from Here

Install it using the Standard Install option. (You will be asked for your e-mail address, it is safe to give it. If you receive alerts from your firewall, allow all activities for Spy Sweeper)

You will be prompted to check for updated definitions, please do so.
(This may take several minutes)

Click on Options > Sweep Options and check Sweep all Folders on Selected drives. Check Local Disc C. Under What to Sweep, check every box.

Click on Sweep and allow it to fully scan your system. If you are prompted to restart the computer, do so immediately. This is a necessary step to kill the infection!

When the sweep has finished, click Remove. Click Select All and then Next

From 'Results', select the Session Log tab. Click Save to File and save the log somewhere convenient.

Exit Spy Sweeper.

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HJT log as well as the Resullts from Spy Sweeper file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
LDTATE:

Thank you for the assistance. I did what you requested and following are the HJT and Spy Sweeper readouts.

I haven't had the screensaver come up to see if the original issue is still infecting the computer. So the computer appears to be running about the same.
Please download the trial version of ewido anti-malware 3.5 here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Note: This can take several minutes to load Sfae Mode.

Then please run Ewido, click on the Scanner run a full scan and let it clean everything it finds. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

Again, thank you for your assistance.
Good Job

use Add/Remove Programs and remove Ewido and Spy Sweeper unless you want to keep them. They're only a 14 day trial version.

Log looks good :D  How is it running any issues?

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you dont have these programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
LDTate: Your time and knowledge are greatly appreciated. So far so good. Some day I think I would like to help pay back this website by doing what you do. Learning how to help others, I believe, would be both interesting and emotionally satisfying. Again thank you.
LDTate: Well I spoke to soon. I did remove the Spy Sweeper. I also ran PCPitStop and did a disk scan. It found the following (these two were a couple of the original reasons for my initial message): SavingsHound Adware Adware "SavingsHound" found in: key "hkey_classes_root \s" Network1.Popups Adware Adware "Network1.Popups" found in: key "hkey_current_user \software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\internet settings\zonemap\domains\media-motor.net" I also ran Ewido again and it found and quarantined the following: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{B37680B2-BA0A-4E5D-BF30-83E44C588624}\RP48\A0005479.exe I can get into the internet using the SBC Yahoo! DSL link, but when my son tries to access the internet using the Internet Explorer Browser in the Quick Launch it states that "Cannot find server". He has always been accessing the internet using that Quick Launch shortcut without any problems. (My son likes to use the quick launch shortcut because it doesn't automatically go into my SBC Yahoo! account.) Can you help me understand what I might have done that has caused this problem?
LDTate: My son can now access the internet thru Quick Launch, but I still wonder about those 2 issues that PCPitStop is still finding. Thank you for the help.

C:\System Volume Information\_restore{B37680B2-BA0A-4E5D-BF30-83E44C588624}\RP48\A0005479.exe

Did you follow the post I made about Removing old restore points and Creating a New restore point?

Backup your Registry…
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run…)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

Click "Start"> "Run"> type in Regedit tap Enter Key

Make sure "My Computer" is highlighted

Click "Edit"> "Find"
Type in SavingsHound tap Enter Key.
Right Click on the file if found and select "Delete"

Tap the "F3" Key to find the next entry of the file. Continue using the "F3" Key until it's finished searching.

Do the same for this one:
media-motor.net

Close Regedit.

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
LDTate:

I did as you requested.

Was able to find and delete the media-pipe.net which was found in the registry. Unfortunately when I did the "find" for savingshound, nothing was found.

So I ran the PCPitStop disk scan again, and all that is left is:

Adware "SavingsHound" found in:
key "hkey_classes_root \s"

Also in the listing in the Registry, I found while getting rid of the media-pipe.net entry, there were a number of "Mature" listings. Can anything be done to clean the system of these entries?

lets see if this will help

Backup your Registry…
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run…)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

NOTE: To be extra safe you can choose to only remove the items in RED.
