Hi. Today i noticed this "Virus Alert!" system tray icon with flashing pictures of a green handicap sign and a red circle and a cross sign (like a no smoking sign). It says "Your computer is infected! Critical system error! system detected virus activities. They may cause......." I KNOW this is not supposed to be there and i dont know how to delete it. I went around the web searching for solutions and i ran into this site, one of the only ones that helped. I need help with deleting this please!! I am in fear of something bad happening like losing all my stuff again (i lost my computer info TWICE with my past computers and i dont want it to happen to my new one). If you can find a solution, that would be GREAT

I was also wondering if my homepage re-directing to a site saying something like "Your private info is being collected by Win32.sinnaka.A@mm" is related to this problem

More info on my changed homepage with a supposed remote tracking thing
This site is called http://www.securitybulletin.net/
It also states "Attention! Your system is under control of remote computer with IP address 227.4.167.118. The remote computer has access to the following folders on your PC:
- \WINDOWS\System32
- \Program Files\Internet Explorer
- \My Documents
- Drive C:\ files
Click here to download official anti-spyware software"
Is this in ANY way related to this icon in the tray?!?!

In fear and gratitude, requesting assistance

here is my hijackit log

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Running the Clean

Warning: running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.

Posted Image

The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

After these instructions, everything seems to be working great, if not better than before.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

There is just one more problem.

in the Other computer problems section of this forum, Dough told me to follow up on all your instructions and to discuss this same problem with you, meaning this might be related to the malware fix.
Here is my problem:
""I am currently using Norton Antivirus 2005. After i received the "Virus Alert!" tray icon virus and deleted it with the steps in other topics, a windows installer comes up every time. When i log in to any of my computer accounts, a "Please wait while windows configures Norton Antivirus 2005" pops up as if i am just installing the program. This is followed by a pop-up message (click ok): "Norton Antivirus 2005 does not support the Repair feature, please uninstall and reinstall. Is the section i underlined a concern? Should i "uninstall and reinstall" norton? If so, will this message go away?""

That darn bad guy just doesn't want to die.

Download Avenger by Swandog, and unzip it to your desktop or somewhere you can find it. (Do not run it yet).
http://swandog46.gee...com/avenger.zip

Note: This program is for use on Windows XP 32 bit systems only, and must be run from an account with Administor priviledges. If yours is a 64 bit version, do not use it, let me know.

Open a Notepad file by clicking Start > Run and typing Notepad.exe in the box, click OK.

Click Format, and ensure Word Wrap is unchecked.

Copy and Paste all the text inside the box below into Notepad.

Now save the file as RemoveFiles.txt in a location where you can find it.

Files to delete:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winzlo32.dll

Registry values to delete:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify | winzlo32.dll

Start Avenger by double clicking on Avenger.exe.

Check Load script from file:

Click on the folder symbol below and to the right, and browse to RemoveFiles.txt.

Double click it to enter it into Avenger.

Click the green traffic light symbol.

You will be asked if you want to execute the script, answer Yes.

At this point you may get prompts from your protection systems, allow them please.

Avenger will set itself up to run the next time you re-boot, and will prompt you to re-start immediately.

Answer Yes, and allow your computer to re-boot.

Upon re-boot a command window will briefly appear on screen (this is normal).

A Notepad text file will be created C:\avenger.txt.

Copy and Paste it into your next post please, along with a new HJT log.

The forum is run by volunteers who donate their time and expertise.
