[Cal3257]

Hello all. I currently have an infection that I think is probably a Vundo Trojan. I've had a similar occurence before, but I had removed it with VundoFix. This time, I am unable to fix it so far. Symptoms are the popups and occasionally my explorer.exe takes up 100% of the CPU. I have tried VundoFix with system restore off and in safe mode, I typed in the file locations: C:\Windows\system32\pmkjh.dll and C:\Windows\system32\hjkmp.* PandaScan says I have pmkhh.dll, tho Hijack This shows pmkjh.dll. O how i wish my laptop came with a Windows OS disk so I can reformat...

If you have System Restore turned off, please turn it on now and set a fresh restore point. I'd rather you have a restore point to go back to that is infected, than to have none at all.

Please print, or copy and paste this text into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to review as you work. This is a long fix, so you are going to need to review this.

Please delete and do not use any VundoFix programs other than the one I am providing below. Please delete them before downloading this Version, so there is no chance of mixing them and using the wrong version.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• Click the Scan for Vundo button.
• Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
• You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
• Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
• When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
• Turn your computer back on.

  Disable SpySweeper:
  You have SpySweeper installed. While this is a great program, we need to temporarily disable (not uninstall) the program because it might stop our fix.[LIST]
• Open it click >Options over to the left then >program options>Uncheck "load at windows startup"
• Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
• Uncheck" home page shield".
• Uncheck ''automatically restore default without notification".

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable SpySweeper again.

Disable SpywareGuard:
You have SpywareGuard installed. While this is a great program, we need to temporarily disable (not uninstall) the program because it might stop our fix.

• Right click the running icon ofSpywareGuard, it will open the program.
• Then go to Menu, file, exit.
• Then confirm the program is closed.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable SpywareGuard again.

Disable TeaTimer:
Please disable TeaTimer as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.To disable TeaTimer:

• Run Spybot-S&D
• Go to the Mode menu , and make sure "Advanced Mode " is selected
• On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
• Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer " and OK any prompts
• Restart your computer.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable TeaTimer again.

Close all Windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Thank you very much. I think it's kinda clean now. The only deviations from your instructions were that I could not find SpySweeper because I uninstalled it a while ago, but it still shows up in HijackThis. Also, after I ran your VundoFix, I did not find pmkjh.dll in the HijackThis scan. I did find the file in the System32 folder in safe mode and deleted that.

Very good work on that pmkjh.dll file. It was a stubborn one. Usually, it is removed by VundoFix, but not this time.

If you did not Uninstall Spysweeper in Control Panel-->Add/Remove Programs, please look for it there and do so, at this time. It looks to still be there.
We will remove it in the HJT log also.

Next:
Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.


Disable SpySweeper:
You have SpySweeper installed. While this is a great program, we need to temporarily disable (not uninstall) the program because it might stop our fix.

• Open it click >Options over to the left then >program options>Uncheck "load at windows startup"
• Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
• Uncheck" home page shield".
• Uncheck ''automatically restore default without notification".

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable SpySweeper again.

Disable SpywareGuard:
You have SpywareGuard installed. While this is a great program, we need to temporarily disable (not uninstall) the program because it might stop our fix.

• Right click the running icon ofSpywareGuard, it will open the program.
• Then go to Menu, file, exit.
• Then confirm the program is closed.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable SpywareGuard again.

Disable TeaTimer:
Please disable TeaTimer as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.To disable TeaTimer:

• Run Spybot-S&D
• Go to the Mode menu , and make sure "Advanced Mode " is selected
• On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
• Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer " and OK any prompts
• Restart your computer.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable TeaTimer again.
[*]Close all Windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check against each of the following.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SpySweeper] "C:\Program Files\Webroot\Spy Sweeper\SpySweeper.exe" /startintray

The following are recommended fixes:

If you did not place this restriction, or ask a program such as Spybot to do so, this can be fixed with Hijack This.

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them:

C:\Program Files\Webroot\Spy Sweeper\SpySweeper.exe

Exit Explorer, enable hidden files and reboot as normal.

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
Do not use it yet.

First, reboot into safe mode.

Then,Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Then, please reboot into Normal Mode:

Your Hijack This log looks to be clean.

If there are no unresolved issues, I recommend the following.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if Malware infects a computer with this operating system the Malware can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  
  Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywar...showtopic=11150
  -reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.
