Tony,

Go to Start> Search> All Files and Folders and do a search for 1.exe and let me know where it is. Is it in C:\ , C:\windows or C:\windows\system32 ??

Hi Ken Thanks for the instructions. I'm currently at work at present but should be able to get on to my home PC in about 6 hours. I will run the search as soon as I get home and post a response. Best wishes Tony

Tony,

Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop:
F-Secure Blacklight

Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement, click > scan then > next

You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).

Copy and paste this log in your next reply. Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

Tony,

Make sure you still have all files and folders enanbled and boot into Safemode, that bad file is in your prefetch folder.

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Prefetch and remove all the contents of the Prefetch Folder.
But not the Prefetch folder itself.

Open HJT Scan Only and remove this entry
O4 - Startup: WindowsUpdate38505[1].exe

Reboot and post a new HJT log

Hi Ken

Apologies for posting later than promised last night. The site was very busy. Anyway, good morning!

As instructed I enabled all files and folders and removed the contents only of the Prefetch folder in Safe Mode. Then removed WindowsUpdate38505[1].exe by checking /fix.

Please see new HJT log following reboot.

Hello Tony,

This is what we are up against

O4 - Startup: WindowsUpdate38505[1].exe

This is what it is

Trojan.Esteems is a Trojan horse that steals confidential information from a compromised computer by logging keystrokes and sending them to a remote server.

Lets go here and follow the removal instructions , take your time and do it step by step. Part of the instructions are having you disable System Restore, besure to turn it back on and create a new restore point when your done.
http://www.symantec....an.esteems.html

Turn off System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* ClickProperties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember, You will have to be in Catagory View to see this

Then run both these free online virus scanners, housecall will clean up but Panda wont but it will show me bad files that I need to see.

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.pandasoft...com/activescan/

Post new HJT log when done, along with the reports from Housecall and Panda.

Ken :D

Hi Ken

Thanks. Following the link I have downloaded instructions and I'll follow them carefully as soon as I get home tonight.

Once again thank you very much for giving your time and expertise.

Cheers

Hi Ken

Still trying to complete instructions. The NAV and Panda Scans took ages.

Turned off System Restore and then ran NAV as instructed - nothing detected. Rebooted and turned on System Restore. Created and renamed new restore point.

Ran PandaSoft which highlighted 3 items - log below. Tried to run TrendMicro but for some reason I get as far as a new window with a grey bar on the left hand side headed status and about halfway on the green status bar in IE.

It's 2.30am this side of the pond so I need to catch some zzzzz's. Just in case it is any use at this stage I ran HJT and have posted a log below. I will let Housecall run - hopefully it will have finished by the time I get up!!
If it has I will run a new HJT log and post again.

Cheers

Tony

Good morning Ken (at least it's morning here 07:21) I left the PC running last night in a vain attempt to run Housecall. Nohing. Just in case I also tried to run from the European site but encountered the same problem. I'll keep trying persist with it if that's the solution. Once again many thanks Cheers Tony

Tony,

Look in this folder For that file.

C:\Documents and Settings\<user profile>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup <------

You will have to be in Safemode to delete it, then run HJT and remove that bad entry.
O4 - Startup: WindowsUpdate38505[1].exe

Post a new log please.

Ken :D

Hi Ken (Good morning) Thanks for the new instructions - as usual I'll implement them when I get back home this evening around 6 hours time. Would it be of any use if I tried to run HouseCall again before implementing latest instructions. Cheers Tony

Hi Ken

Sorry I should have asked for clarification regarding:

Look in this folder For that file.

C:\Documents and Settings\<user profile>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup <------

I'm being dim and without access to my home PC (sorry) not sure what file and what I should be doing!! :unsure:

Thanks

Tony

Tony,

Right click on Start and then click on Explore and scroll following this path to the Startup Folder and then delete
WindowsUpdate38505[1].exe

C:\Documents and Settings\tony\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\ WindowsUpdate38505[1].exe

Like I said earlier, it most likely wont let you delete it in Normal mode, you will have to boot to Safemode and also make sure that you still have windows enabled to show all files and folders.
