Hi Janeece:

A note for future reference. It is always best to advise the nature of the problem, so we will have some clue as to what the problem may be.
Some Malware is visable only to your computer, or by using specialized programs that will reveal its presence. Besides, I'm nosey. :P

You are running HijackThis from its zipped archive; please create a new folder for it and unzip the program into it. It is very important you do this before anything else!

You are using a Program called SpywareDetector. If it is not the most recent version it should be removed. Please advise if this is the latest version, or not, since there are special removal instructions that need to be followed.

Next:
Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

[*]Press Control-Alt-Del to enter the Task Manager.
Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes:
ALCMTR

Exit the Task Manager when finished.

Then, go to Control Panel-->Add/Remove Programs and Uninstall/Remove....
mywebsearch, mywebsearch Toolbar, or any variant of mywebsearch.

Next:
Close all Windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check against each of the following.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsear...?p=ZNxmk164DHCA

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them:

C:\WINDOWS\ALCMTR.EXE

Exit Explorer, enable hidden files and reboot as normal.

Then, please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log and post it into this topic.

Please advise if any problems remain.

To post, please use the Add Reply feature, so I will be notified.

Hello Piatan:
Thank-you for your directions on scanning my computer. I hope I'm in the right area for posting
(I had some problems.)

I unzipped the program again and put into the shared documents file on my computer.
The SpywareDetector was rather an afterthought between my husband and myself to see whether
it would help get rid of the looming infections that seem to be plagueing my computer.

When I was in the Task Manager I could not find the ALCMTR processes to end, and also in the
Control Panel-->Add/Remove I didn't find mysearchweb I only found Google Toolbar so I left it alone.

I checkmarked the items in the scan results and clicked the fix. But in safe mode I couldn't find any DARK folders to delete. I'm not too sure what you meant!

So this is the second scan results I hope all has been cleansed

Thank-you
Janeece

Hi Janeece:

Sorry for the delay responding. When you posted your latest HJT log, you started a new topic, so I was not notified of your posting. Your post was found by an associate, who merged your posts into a single topic.

We need to Uninstall/remove StopSign, it is not recommended software and
you are already running Nortons Anti-Virus and Firewall Programs. Having two Anti-Viruses/or Firewalls running at the same time can cause conflicts between them, which makes both less effective, rather than more effective.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please go to Control Panel-->Add/Remove Programs and Uninstall/Remove......
Acceleration Software (StopSign)

Close all Windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check against each of the following.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [StopSignSsTsMon] Rundll32.exe "C:\Program Files\Acceleration Software\Anti-Virus\sstsmon.dll",VerifyStatus
O16 - DPF: {5ED80217-570B-4DA9-BF44-BE107C0EC166} (Windows Live Safety Center Base Module) - https://scan.safety....lscbase7617.cab

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

[*]Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown RED and delete them:

C:\Program Files\ Acceleration Software

Exit Explorer, enable hidden files and reboot as normal.

Then, please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log and post it into this topic.

Please advise if any problems remain.

Please use the Posted Image button to reply.

Couldn't find any sign of Acceleration Software in Add/Remove Programs but caught up with it in SAFE Mode
Ran scan as requested with these results hope this works

We have a second computer that my husband uses, and I wanted to run this same program on his Dell as is is slower that Molasses literally. Will that cause any problems with my name being associated with this machine (I spend more computer time than John and he admits that he's still computer illiterate.)

Hi Janeece:

You are using an expired version of Hijack This. First, please delete the version you are using, then download the new version from here:

http://radiosplace.com

Or from here:

http://www.spywarein.../hijackthis.zip

View Post

That version is so old it has grey whiskers. :D

Then, run HJT. Scan and copy the log, then post the new log into this topic.

Let me know if there are any problems.

Please use the Posted Image button to reply.

About your questions for the other machine.
You can run Hijack This on any PC. It won't know the difference.

But before you run Hijack This on the other machine, there are some programs you should run on it, to clear out some of the mess.

Please use the following links to run two, or more of these online Virus Scanners and let them fix whatever they find.

If you are using any of the browsers listed just below, the following online Virus scanning site is compatable.
http://be.trendmicro...call_launch.php
If you are using any of these browsers:
Microsoft Internet Explorer
Netscape (6+)
Mozilla (1+)
Firefox (all)
Opera (7.5+)

Internet Explorer users can also use the following links.

When using Trend Micro, be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location, so you can delete it yourself.
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
http://www.kaspersky...ml?id=146100010
Bitdefender and let it delete everything it finds.
TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan

Note any thing that can't be fixed and Reboot when done.

And here are links to two online Trojan Scanners. Lets run one, or both of these too.

http://scan.sygatete...trojanscan.html

And here:
http://www.windowsec...com/trojanscan/

If you are unable to get or use either of the online Trojan Scanners above...........

Go here http://www.trojanhunter.com/ and download and run the free trial of Trojan Hunter.

Then, Please download and install Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D according to the following instructions. If you already have these programs, please make sure they are the latest version and have been updated today. Then run full systems scans as described below.

Install and how to use the NEW Ad-aware SE
http://www.bleepingc...showtutorial=48

Reboot after using Ad-Aware SE.
Download the VX cleaner plug in for Adaware. Install it, then open Adaware & go to *add-ons* & run the plug-in. If anything is found, select *clean system* & when done, reboot & run Adaware & let it finish the clean-up. Reboot again.

Would you please download the Spybot S&D program from here Spybot S&D and install it.
  • Select Search for updates.
  • Then select all available updates that are displayed in the white box.
  • Select a download mirror nearest your location.
  • Then select Download updates .
  • Shut down and restart Spybot.
  • Select the Search and destroy icon and click on Check for Problems.
  • Delete/fix anything that spybot lists In RED.
.

Then, please REBOOT, to allow Spybot to finish working.

Please download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • Click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution : It is not recommended to use the 'Issues' tab as it is known to find legitimate items.
  • After it has completed it's process, click Exit.

Then, please reboot and it should be ready to scan with Hijack This.

Hi Janeece:

Your Hijack This log looks to be free of Malware.
Are you having any problems ?

Have you ran an Anti-Virus Program ? Online AV scanners will often pick up Viruses that on board AV programs miss, so don't discount using them.

Have you ran a Trojan Killer ? There are a couple of free ones that I recommend, if you do not have one you like to use. There are also online Trojan Scanners that do a very good job.

Here is a relatively new Program from Microsoft.(Still in Beta)

Windows Defender (Microsoft)

Please use this link to learn more.

http://www.microsoft...re/default.mspx

If you are having no continuing problems, I suggest the following.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if Malware infects a computer with this operating system the Malware can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywar...showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
http://castlecops.co...tlite7736-.html
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Hi Piatan: Thank-you again for your patience with my stumbling around on this sight. I have been using "Windows Live OneCare Beta" it has Antivirus and Antispyware partnered with Windows Defender. It also has a feature for backing up the hard drive, but I wonder how ofter that should be done. Do you have any information on this it would be appreciated. The Norton SystemWorks Premier 2005 didn't seem to catch ANY issues dealing with Antiviral protection and with this OneCare it wasn't compatible, so I had to drop one to get the other. I have started working on the Dell, and will send a NEW Topic "HijackThis Dell Scan" when I'm finished with the pre scans before running HJT scan to send your way. You had mentioned a www.trojanhunter.com so I think I will try that later. The SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are installed and are running, but the HostsMan I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with it, or does it run all by itself in the background. I also was wondering about the CCleaner program, is it safe to run on this computer, now that it has been cleaned of Malware. Thank-you again Jan

Hi Janeece:

Don't worry about "stumbling around on this site". For most of us, every day is a learning day. That is certainly true for me.

CCleaner should be safe to run. I do not have any negative feedback on it.

"Hosts" does run in the background and needs little care to be effective.

Windows Live OneCare Beta should be a good one. It would probably be best to let it update automatically.

Give those online scanners a try. They sometimes find Viruses and Trojans that many of our onboard scanners miss. The truth is, nothing finds everything at any given time. It's a bother, but it is really best to use a shotgun approach when dealing with Malware and use several programs, to weed out what one misses and another finds. Online scanners give us another tool, to double check those that are onboard our PCs.

Trojan Hunter has a trial version. I suggest trying it before buying. Check the Tom Coyote site, to see if Trojan Hunter is still being offered here. You could save some cash, by buying here.

If you start a "New Topic" I will not be notified of your post. I'm notified (by email) only if I'm subscribed to a specific topic, so I could easily miss it. Not to worry, there are a good many fully qualified helpers here, that will be glad to assist you.

When you do post the HJT log, advise in the post what you have done to clean the machine and any problems that you are experiencing. That will ease the cleaning process more than you can imagine and it will prevent duplicating what you have already done.

I'm going to close this topic now, since your PC seems to be doing fine.

Safe surfing. :wavey:
