Sorry for the belated response, I really do appreciate the help. I am currently in the process of getting the XP CD from my grandpa, who gave me this laptop. Since he isn't the quickest person, would any XP CD work? My desktop is on XP, so would I be able to run that CD for the fix, or do I need the one that came with this computer? Thanks again...

Not sure on that, I've never tried it. I would think as long as it's the same version: XP Home or XP Pro: it should work

Ok, I guess I'll go ahead and try it, don't really have anything to lose. Unless the fix alters other files besides just the missing windows registries... Does this happen? As I understand it, this fix would just search my windows folder for the missing necessary files and replace them via the CD. Is this a correct assumption? Also, how do I see which verson of XP my computer is running? Thanks.

Right Click the the "My Computer" Icon> Properties

Agh, this is frustrating. The scan completed, and I thought it repaired some stuff, but I downloaded the trial of PC Tools' Registry Mechanic and it found over 80 problem. Unfortunately, I can't view a report or fi any of these problem without purchasing the full software. Do you know of any freeware alternatives? If not, it's only $30 so it wouldn't kill me or anything. Thanks again for the help

Backup your Registry...
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run...)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL



I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

NOTE: To be extra safe you can choose to only remove the items in RED.

It says that registry editting has been disabled by the administrator... how do i fix this?

1. Click Start, Run and type this command exactly as given below: (better - Copy and paste)

REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableRegistryTools /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f



If that didn't work:


Using the Group Policy Editor - For Windows XP Professional
DisableRegistryTools value corresponds to the Disable registry editing tools Group Policy

User Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ System

Click Start, Run and type GPEDIT.MSC to launch the Group Policy Editor, and set the policy to Not Configured

Ok, well I ran the RegSeeker and followed the instructions. It looked like it cleaned everything up. There doesn't seem to be any problems thus far. I'm still unnable to connect to my network to share files/printers but that may be a whole different issue. It's just that right after I cleaned out the previous bugs, I tried to run Windows Media Player and encountered a number of issues. I was able to fix it just looking around online and I think I had to download quartz.dll and put it in my system folder. This just got me wondering if I was missing any other important files. It seems like the RegSeeker cleaned out a bunch of stuff, but I'm not sure if it searched for missing files. For all I know, I may have all the necessary files, and my network problems are rooted somewhere else. Anyway, thanks for all the help, it was much appreciated
