theres my log, can anybody help? i cant seem to find the thing in my task manager. its a little red circle near the time in the bottom right corner, with a white cross in it. every minute or so it comes up with a message bubble (im on windows xp), saying something along the lines of "windows has detected spyware infection! windows suggests you update to the latest antispyware tools to prevent data loss. windows will now download and install the most up-to-date antispyware for you. click this balloon to update.

when right clicking on the cross, it comes up with a shorter bubble saying "windows has detected spyware infection! click here to protect against spyware".

i am no expert when it comes to spyware removal, normally adaware sorts me out. also when this first came up i disconnected off the net but before that it had disabled my firewall, and it comes up with an error message whenever i try and view my firewall settings or enable it through windows security centre.

can anybody please help me with your expert knowledge? thanks!!
Hello Mike and welcome to TomCoyote forum. You do have some nasties, including this one: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/w….exe-10891.html which as the information says is usually associated with Smitfraud/SpySheriff. Please follow the instuctions in the posted order.

You are running HJT from a TEMP folder and this is not safe, we will have no backups if we should need them. Move HJT here: C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe. If you need more instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm

Thanks to noahdfear and any others who helped with this fix.

Enable hidden files and folders: http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html You may not see the bad stuff unless you do this.

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Please print out or copy these instructions\tutorials to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Download SmitRem.exe © noahdfear from one of these sites to your Desktop.
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/smitRem.exe
http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/click%20cou....php?id=1"

Double-click the smitRem.exe and it will extract the files to a smitRem folder on your Desktop.

Please download the trial version of ewido anti-malware 3.5. Install ewido anti-malware 3.5: http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and start the program from the icon on your desktop, then check for and download updates. Don't Run Yet.

Reboot to safe mode

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Tuturial if needed: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial61.html

logon to your user account.
Open the smitfraud folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. When the tool completes:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi…fo/bt_side.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi…arch.yahoo.com/
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows installer] C:\winstall.exe
O4 - Startup: LimeWire On Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire.exe
O16 - DPF: {D7BF3304-138B-4DD5-86EE-491BB6A2286C} - http://www.azebar.com/install/azesearch.cab

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Delete these folders if listed

C:\Program Files\LimeWire\ >>> folder
Delete these files if listed.

C:\winstall.exe >>> file

Open Ewido Security Suite
Then please run Ewido, click on the Scanner run a full scan and let
it clean everything it finds unless you know it is not bad.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom
of the screen named
Click Save report
Save the report to your desktop <<< I must see that report

In the Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Empty recycle bin.

Reboot

Download this file from the link to your desktop.
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select 'Install'

Once it is finished your Zones should be reset.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE/Spyads, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE/Spyads, run the batch file and reinstall the protection

"copy/paste" the contents of the log C:\smitfiles.txt a new HijackThis log and the Ewido scan report to this same thread.

Let me know how the computer is running now, we may have more to do.

Thanks…pskelley

thanks loads for that! the little red cross in the corner is now gone but it seems that i still cant turn my windows firewall on! the same messages as before.

i did exactly as instructed, as i remember, i did not delete limewire since i wanted that program…. is it bad? i deleted the autostart thing for limewire but didnt delete the actual folder. please tell me if i must but i use limewire fairly frequently.

a few of the things that you said might be present such as….

"Delete these files if listed.

C:\winstall.exe >>> file"

were not there.

anything else to do?

THANKS A MILLION. i appreciate the time you took to wrote that, and any more help would be really great! also, you mentioned "spyware blaster" and "IE/spyads" programs, should i install these, and are they free?

i just did an ad-aware scan and found 32 items, some MRU list or something, and some tracker cookies. these have just been deleted.

:D thanks!

thanks loads for that! the little red cross in the corner is now gone but it seems that i still cant turn my windows firewall on! the same messages as before.

Thanks for that information, let's make sure the malware is gone, then we will see what needs to be done. There is no doubt these infections mess with the system, in many cases the firewall has to be uninstalled and reinstalled. Since it is I assume the SP2 firewall, you may have to ask micorsoft to help?

i did exactly as instructed, as i remember, i did not delete limewire since i wanted that program…. is it bad? i deleted the autostart thing for limewire but didnt delete the actual folder. please tell me if i must but i use limewire fairly frequently.

It is your computer, I would not have it one any of mine. Here is some information: http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/pest/Pe…px?id=453088059
Here is what SpywareInfo has to say: http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/ You get to make the call. I just clean you up, make suggestions and move on.

Looks like ewido cleaned everything it four, here is some help with those cookies if you like:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/cookies.htm
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/…acy/config.mspx
and some information you need: ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

You HJT log looks free of malware so, here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

That information will be in the links I just posted. I personally run those freeware programs on all of my computers.
i just did an ad-aware scan and found 32 items, some MRU list or something, and some tracker cookies. these have just been deleted.
If you surf and don't block cookies you are going to get them. The MRU items are harmless and Ad-aware will delete them for you when you scan if you like. Here is some information: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=142298

You can start looking here for answers to the SP2 firewall issue:
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navc…re+SP2+firewall
Do you get a specific error message that can be googled about the Firewall? You may have to contact Microsoft about it?

some links that may help:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/s…2_wscintro.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/s…n_firewall.mspx

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…src=sec_doc_nam

Thanks…Phil
wow, thanks again! i have now uninstalled limewire and will try out a program from the "clean" list on spywareinfo. i will do the system restore clean thing too thanks. :D
