[Stosh]

My laptop is built like a gazelle but it's running like a penguin. It freezes up more and more, and it refuses to visit some of my Favorites..and there's no rhyme or reason to its bad manners. Here's my HJT log. I've scanned with NAV, AdAware, and Search and Destroy but the problems continue. HELP!!!

Hello and welcome to the forum. You do have problems, if you still need help and have not received it elsewhere, please do this.

1) I see ewido onboard, open the program and choose update, allow time for it to finish. Now click scanner then complete system scan. Allow ewido to remove anything it locates unless you know it is not bad. Save that scan report, I must see it.

2) Post the ewido scan results and this time post a complete HJT log. You cut off the first four lines and we need to see that information.

We have to Services to remove, one I am sure is bad, but the hacker has called it O23 - Service: Service which makes it a little tricky to disable and might even be harder to delete with HJT.

This one: Distributed Link Tracking Client Protocol Helper: do you have any idea what it is? If you know it, let me know and do not disable or delete it.

Let's give this a try like this:

I can find nothing about this service or the file, unless you know it:

1) Disable the Service
Click Start < Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to Distributed Link Tracking Client Protocol Helper and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

This is where it gets tricky, HJT needs the service typed in and these hackers are not playing by the rules. The name is usually like this (DLTCPH) <<< just an example, I have no way of knowing what it is. You can try to type the complete name, if it will not let you I am not sure how we will delete it yet. As long as it is disabled and we delete the file, that may be enough??

Delete the Service
Open HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service.
In the Delete window, type Distributed Link Tracking Client Protocol Helper and press OK.
OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer.

This one: O23 - Service: Service - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\Service.exe
will be tricky for the same reason. When you disable it you will be disabling a Service called: Service

when you try to delete it, all you will have to use is the word Service and I do not know how that will work. We may have to depend on leaving that one disabled and killing the file also. d****d hackers.


2) Disable the Service
Click Start < Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to Service and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

Delete the Service
Open HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service.
In the Delete window, type Service and press OK.
OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer.

Some items or files may be gone when you get to them, just make sure they are enabled so you can find them and that you do not miss any.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
