Hello Al_graze, :D

Welcome to the Tom Coyote Forum, sorry about the delay but we are overwhelmed with logs and sometimes cant get to them as fast as we would like to.

Your log looks clean, but sometimes there could be entries that are hidden on your HJT log, lets run the trial of Ewido, it will scout out bad things and also may show me if you have an infection that is hidden.

Download and install Ewido Anti-Malware
Ewido Anti-Malware
* Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop for it to double-click.
o Click on update
o You should see Update Complete when done.
o Now close out the program <– Dont run it yet

Now reboot into Safemode
To Enter SAFEMODE

* Go to START/ SHUT OF YOUR COMPUTER/ RESTART
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu.
* Use the UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the ENTER KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD

Now open Ewido
o Click on scanner.
o Run a full system scan
o Let the program scan the machine.
o While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK.
o Select Perform action on all infections
o Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report.
o Click Save report.
o Save the report to your desktop.

Post back with the Ewido report and a new HJT log.

Ken :D
Have run updated versions of Ccleaner, Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, Ad-Aware SE, Spybot Search & Destroy, Microsoft Windows Defender and CWShredder. Went online and ran a Bitdefender full system scan followed by a Panda ActiveScan.

Hi Al,

HijackThis Log (PS - What to do with the "file missing" entries?)

Most times this is the way HJT picks up the entry, the file usually is still present.

Your log looks very clean, :thumbup: Ewido picked up nothing :thumbup:

Maybe we need to just run some maintenance on your system to spruce it up.

Make sure windows is still enabled to show all files and folders and this will work better in Safemode.
SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS

* Click on MY COMPUTER
* Then on your C: Drive
* Then to TOOLS/ FOLDER OPTIONS/ VIEW
* Choose the radio button to SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS
* Take the checkmark out of HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES
* Then APPLY/ OK

* Don't forget to reverse this once your computer is clean

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Prefetch and remove all the contents of the Prefetch Folder.
But not the Prefetch folder itself.

Go to C:\windows\temp and delete all the contents of the temp folder but not the temp folder itself.

Go to C:\Documents and setting> do this for each user on your computer
then to Local Setting and empty the Temp and Temporary Internet Files, but not the folder itself.

Reboot normally

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
* When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now Empty your Recycle Bin

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your
system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* ClickProperties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember

* Go to START/ CONTROL PANEL> PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE> REARRANGE ITEMS ON YOUR HARD DISK TO MAKE PROGRAMS RUN FASTER
This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to keep your system running good. The first time you run it, it may take awhile.

Post back and let me know how your doing, I have some free tools for you to install to help keep your system more secure.

Post back and let me know how your doing, I have some free tools for you to install to help keep your system more secure.

Hey Ken,

Thanks for all your help, really appreciate you taking your time to help a fellow out, really cool!

I followed your advice (eliminated temp files, system restore, etc…) although I had already ran the defragmenter a day ago (after analizing, the tool said that the disk didnt need to defragment)

The computer is slightly faster, but internet is somewhat sluggish (I have Cable, I have used Internet tools saying it goes up to 512kbps) many times, pages time out when I open a new window and type in a new url

Here is what I run on my PC: (If you have any suggestions or improvements I can download, I would appreciate the help)

Antivirus: AVG free (I COMPLETELY uninstalled Norton Internet Security 2006… not that good and too much of a resource hog)
Firewall: ZoneAlarmPro
Spyware Tools: Spybot S&D / AdAware SE / Spyware Blaster / CWShredder
Registry Cleaner: Ccleaner / Registrar Lite
Other useful tools: TuneXP 1.5 / Explorer XP / Tcpview / WinOptimizer Platinum 3

Here are my system specs:

Processor: Pentium III B (A80530,Tualatin)
Clock frequency: 1200 Mhz
RAM type: DRAM Synchronous
Total: 510 MB ( Used: 262 MB (52 %) / Free: 247 MB (48 %) )
Swap File (virtual memory): 1.248 MB ( Used: 212 MB (18 %) / Free: 1.036 MB (82%) )
Windows XP Professional ; Service Pack 2

Logical Drives:
c: [] 55.92 GB (60044509184 Bytes) (Total capacity:)
27.17 GB (29171871744 Bytes) (Bytes used:)
28.75 GB (30872637440 Bytes) (Bytes free:)

d: [] 37.26 GB (40007729152 Bytes) (Total capacity:)
21.93 GB (23544315904 Bytes) (Bytes used:)
15.33 GB (16463413248 Bytes) (Bytes free:)
Al,

The tools you have are fine, your system is pretty lean, meaning you dont have a lot of startup entries. Norton AV is a good program but where people get in trouble is when they install the whole security suite, thats a real resouce hog. A stand alone AV and Firewall are great.

Your should never have more than one AV program running this is a case of MORE IS NOT BETTER
Malware is a little different, you can install a few programs to help block the bad guys from installing.

Here is a list of things to do and install, some you have done already so just skip those, but you can do them every now and then to keep your system smooth running.

Here is a good website to go to , you can run some speed tests and it will give you tips on settings that may speed up your connection.
http://www.dslreports.com/

* Download and Install CCleaner,
* Click on RUN TOOL
* This program is safe to run, but it will delete your cookies, so if there are any you want to keep,
* Go to Options> Cookies and move any you want to keep from the left window to the right window.

* When you run the Issues Scan before you click on Remove Selected Issues, it will ask you to backup the registry, Say Yes.

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Prefetch and remove all the contents of the Prefetch Folder.
But not the Prefetch folder itself.

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

* ClickProperties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You need to be in Category View to access this feature.
You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember

* Make sure that your ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE is up to date and run a full scan at least once aweek.

* Here are Free Anti-Virus Programs if you need one

AVG Free Edition
AntVir Personal Edition

* Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.

* Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

* Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and
give you the option to deny the change.

* IE- Spyad IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains
in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed,
although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

* Firefox Browser
It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use
them both. When it asks you if you want it to be your default browser, say NO and take the checkmark out of the box to ask you again. After you use this
for awhile, you will want to make it your default.

* Thunderbird Mail There companion mail program was highly favored in PCWorld Magazine,
this has a good spam filter and is more secure than Outlook Express.

* Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't
access the internet without it.

* WINDOWS UPDATES - Enable Automatic Updates
Right click on MY COMPUTER/Click on PROPERTIES/ AUTOMATIC UPDATES and put a mark in the radio button
DOWNLOAD UPDATES FOR ME BUT LET ME CHOOSE WHEN TO INSTALL THEM.

Al, thanks for using Tom Coyote, I will leave this thread open for a few days in case you have any other questions.

Safe Surfin
Ken :D
I followed all of your suggestions, thank you so much! :lol:

Last quick question: I noticed that my biggest problem with internet is that pages timeout… I type a url and 3/5 times ill have to hit the refresh button because the page supposedly started to load but didnt do so fast enough

I noticed that when I used the windows task manager (ctrl+alt+del) in the processes tab to set the priority for firefox.exe to "AboveNormal" pages loaded perfectly.. and didnt have this timeout problem, actually it seemd that pages loaded faster and all… it was great… however, everytime I closed firefox, the priority set back to "Normal"

Is there anyway to set firefox's priority to "AboveNormal" permanently???
Good Morning Al,

Try cleaning out your cache in both IE and Firefox.

Firefox . Go to Tools> Options> Privacy> Cache and clean it out.

IE Go to Tools > Internet Options > General Tab > Temporary Internet Files and delete the files and the cookies.

You will need your windows XP disk for this –> Scannow

OK… try this. Click Start>Run, type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things. You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.
Let me know if that helps.

Here are some sites to help you speed up windows.

Al, if all else fails, you can post in these sites, these people are more knowledgeble with windows problems than I.

All these forums are free but like Tom Coyote, you have to sign up in order to post.
