Thanks for sending your information. We are sorry for the delay in responding. The volunteers here are swamped and unfortunately not all logs get answered as quickly as we'd like.

If you still need help with your problem, please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log, then post it here, in this topic . We do need to see a current logfile.

To post, please use the Add Reply feature, so I will be notified.

Please provide a description of the problem.

Please do not edit your Hijack This log. We need to see the entire logfile, with no revisions.

The help you receive here is free. If you wish to show your appreciation, then you may donate to help keep us online.

Want to help others? Join the ClassRoom and learn how.

Hi michakeynan:

You do not mention the nature of your problem, so we are sort of working blind.

You are running HijackThis from its zipped archive; please create a new folder for it and unzip the program into it. It is very important you do this before anything else!

[*]Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Disable Microsoft AntiSpyware:
We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft AntiSpyware
  • Click on Tools, Settings.
  • In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection
  • Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents
  • Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Disable Ewido:
Please disable Ewido, as it may interfere with the fix.[br]To disable Ewido:
From the system tray:
  • Right-click the system tray icon and uncheck real time protection.
    or From within Ewido -
  • Under 'Your security status', if the real time protection is active, deactivate it by clicking 'real time protection' until the status says 'inactive'.
Once your log is clean you can re-enable Ewido.
[*]Close all Windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check against each of the following.

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm

If this is not the latest Version of AdwareAlert, it should be Uninstalled in Control Panel-->Add/Remove Programs, fixed with HJT and the file deleted farther below. If this is the latest version, then leave it.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdwareAlert] C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert\AdwareAlert.Exe -boot

If you have the latest Microsoft updates this hotfix should be removed in Add/Remove programs, fixed here with Hijack This and the file deleted farther below.
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\wmfhotfix.dll

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

[*]Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them:

C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert\AdwareAlert.Exe -boot
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wmfhotfix.dll

Exit Explorer, enable hidden files and reboot as normal.

Then, please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log and post it into this topic.

Please advise if any problems remain.

To post, please use the Add Reply feature, so I will be notified.

Hi michakeynan:

You are running HijackThis from its zipped archive; please create a new folder for it and unzip the program into it. It is very important you do this before anything else!

Please print, or copy and paste this text into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to review as you work. Please read this text carefully, before beginning.

Next:
I see you have a copy of Ewido, so lets run it and see what it finds.
Please set it up according to the following directions and be sure to update, before running.

Please download, install, update and scan your system with the free version of Ewido trojan scanner:
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK.
  • From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"), click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so time to go get a drink and a snack....
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  • When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file.
Please save the Ewido report, to be posted here later.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
    Ewido manual updates

The trial version of Ewido works like a full featured version for 14 days, after that the only features that will not work are, autoupdate and realtime protection. It will still be able to be updated with the link above and be used to scan and remove undesirables.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

    Disable Microsoft AntiSpyware:
We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.[list]

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Start Uppings] svcchosts.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

[*]Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them:
You may have to do an All Files search, to find it.

svcchosts.exe(Please Note the additional "c" and be sure to delete this one.)

Exit Explorer, enable hidden files and reboot as normal.

Then, please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log and post it into this topic, along with the Ewido report.

Please advise if any problems remain.

To post, please use the Add Reply feature, so I will be notified.

Hi michakeynan: Help me to understand why you could not delete svcchosts.exe, in safe mode. Did it say it was being used by another program, or could you not find it ? Did you do an All Files Search for it ? The reason I ask is, that file does need to be found and deleted. If you are having problems doing that please advise, so I can assist. Also, are saying you are having problems with SBC Yahoo! ? Your latest Hijack This logfile looks to be clean. If there are any additional problems, please advise.

Hi michakeynan:

Directions for finding a file, with an All Files Search.

Be sure to first close all open Windows and browsers.
Next, make sure you have Set Windows to show Hidden Files & Folders, then reboot into safe mode

Click on "Start".
Then move to "Search" and click on "Files and folders". Click on "All Files" Then enter the following into the search box. You can copy and paste this, if you like.

svcchosts

Sure, you have a Windows Explorer.
The following probably will not help find this particular file, but these are directions for using Windows Explorer.

Windows Explorer- How to Use, to delete files/folders.
TO USE WINDOWS EXPLORER

General:

. Right Click on the START button
. Left Click on "explore"
. Find "Local Disc C" near the top and scroll down the list of folders under Local Disc C until you find the first folder that you are looking for.
------------------------------

Specific: This is for finding files in the System32 folder.

. Scroll down to the folder called "WINDOWS"
. Left click on the little cross to the left of the Windows Folder
. Scroll down the list to the System32 Folder
. Left click on the system 32 folder and a slew of programs, etc.. appear in the right hand pane.
. Look for the file you need.
. Right click on FILE
. Choose DELETE
. Proceed the same way for every file that you need to delete.

It is very strange that SBC Yahoo could not assist you with a mail problem. You probably interrupted someones siesta. Try again and you will probably get someone more interested in assisting you. After all, it is their problem too.

Hope that helps.

Let me know how things turn out.:D

Hi michakeynan:

Re: your Moms laptop. Probably all that Heavy Metal Rock music she downloaded is slowing things down. :D

Your HJT log does look to be clean.

If there are no continuing problems, I suggest the following.

System Restore--WXP

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if Malware infects a computer with this operating system the Malware can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywar...showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice

So how did I get infected in the first place?

Safe surfing. :wavey:
