I need some help. I recently downloaded a zip file which I thought I could trust. I scanned the zip file with Norton and it was clean. After unzipping, I scanned it again and it was clean. After installing the program Norton said it was clean still. Shortly thereafter, my firewall showed popup messages saying “AN APPLICATION NAMED WINDOWS NT LOG APPLICATION (FILE NAME WINLOGON.EXE) HAS BEEN BLOCKED FROM ACCESSING THE NETWORK”. I’m also getting firewall messages that say “UNIVERSA APPLICATION WIN2A2.TMP.EXE IS TRYING TO ACCESS META-PORN.COM…” Not Universal, but Universa.

I get the same messages with dozens of other files, such as WINHLD32 and others like WIN2A2, WINA8, WIN8FF. All with .TMP.EXE extenstion. Many, MANY with the TMP.EXE extensions. I can see those files running in Task Manager and can manually close them. After manually deleting them, they seem to return with a new name, although WIN2A2.TMP.EXE keeps coming back with the same name. They all seem to reside in the C:\windows\temp today. Yesterday, they were in Documents and Settings\ User Name\Local Settings\TEMP . Most can be deleted but they always come back with new names. And there are also a bunch of these same files in the PREFETCH folder too, but with .PF extensions.

I ran a bunch of scanner programs like Spybot, AdAware, BitDefender, CWShredder, Kaspersky, Norton, Trend Micro and Prevx. Either they found nothing, or removed some, but didn’t really fix anything. Some of the files they found are:

I also ran Ewido Malware removal in Safe Mode and it crashed after almost 90 minutes of scanning, so I have no log, but it found and removed two items: WINHLD32, and WIN2A2.TMP.EXE and described the latter as Downloader.Small.CKR. I still see the WINHLD32 is still running at startup in HJT even though it was deleted.

I’ve been looking around for info on the net and read where I should look in the registry for a folder called “DOMAINS” which I did, and found hundreds of listings for shopping and porn sites. I cleaned that out with DELDOMAINS.INF.

I tried two system restores on XP to a date prior to the download, but it says Windows can’t do it and I just ended up with triple copies of virtually every shortcut on my computer. Now I have thousands of prgrams and files names COPY(2) and COPY (3). Thus, the duplicates in HJT log. I’ll deal with that later.

Other people have had similar problems with .TMP.EXE files but there isn’t anything in my HJT startup like theirs. The enclosed log is after removing “Selective Startup” with MSCONFIG. Everything is on auto start.

Strangely, I would never know there is a problem unless my firewall told me. The computer isn’t running slow. Those .TMP.EXE files I see in Task Manager are about 10 MB each and there are currenly three of them running. Their current name is WIN137D.TMP.EXE. No strange emails are in my outbox and my internet connection works.

Hello proton777, welcome to the TC Forums.

This is what I suggest you do:

Next, launch Notepad (Start>All Programs>Accessories), and copy/paste all the blue REGEDIT below to it. Don't forget to add the REGEDIT4
Save in: Desktop
File Name: fixme.reg
Save as Type: All files
Click: Save

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\winhld32.dll]

Back on the desktop, doubleclick fix.reg and allow it to run. Let it merge.

Click the Empty Selected button.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Thanks for your reply and suggestions. Here's where things stand.

As I was reading your post, Kaspersky was scanning again with latest updates. It kept finding that DFRGSRV.EXE was infected but could not delete it. This happened over and over. It also showed several messages about a Trojan downloader W32.ZLOB.HD and that WINLOGON.EXE\ldAD08.TMP was infected. And SYSTEM32.EXE\ldA08.TMP. When I clicked to delete, I got the blue screen of death. I rebooted and not much happened. Only the Volume icon in the SYSTRAY loaded. I could open folders but not run anything, including Explorer. TASK MANAGER showed almost no activity.

Rebooted again, and things were better. I tried going online but connection kept hanging. Same thing on the next reboot.

Rebooted again and pretty much the same thing was happening. Looked in TASK MAN and didn't see the normal problems there, but I did notice 7 copies of LuCALLBACK PROXY running (or something like that) and WOWEXE.EXE or something like that. That seemed strange, so I rebooted and that's where I am now.

I don't see the above programs running in TASK MANAGER, nor do I see any of the TMP.EXE files either. I did get ONE Firewall popup saying WINLOGON.EXE is try to access the network, which was the original problem. That was the only time I've seen it. It should be happeing more often. Now I'm afraid to turn off my computer, not knowing what will happen next

Yes, sorry. So much happened that I forgot to write the obvious. I did add the new registry entry and also ran the cleaner program, and the last log reflects that.

That 020 is still there. Did you reboot?

Yes, I rebooted several times. It took about 4 or 5 reboots before I was able to get enough control of the machine to do anything with. But no changes were made after the first reboot. Everything is still working fine, with no firewall popups aside from the first one. Maybe one of the programs I was using to fix the problem is doing something in the background.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.


Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - Startup: desktop(2).ini
O4 - Startup: desktop(3).ini
O4 - Global Startup: desktop(2).ini
O4 - Global Startup: desktop(3).ini
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winhld32 - winhld32.dll (file missing)

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"


Delete this File if listed:
winhld32.dll


Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

I did as you said, but HJT won't let me delete the O4's. It says the file may be in use and use Task Manager to shut them down. But they are not listed there. It did let me remove the O2O and within a few seconds, I got a firewall popup saying WINLOGON.EXE is trying to access the network. Probably a coincidence. It's the same original problem only much less frequent. I did a search for WINDHLD32 and the machine is clean. Is it safe to remove the startup.ini by using START>FIND and deleting them there?

OK, here's the latest. As I said, I could not remove the desktop.ini files. And, after logging, I got the firewall popup again saying WINLOGON.EXE is trying to access the network. And much thanks for all the help you've given me so far!

Lets see if we can fix the desktop.ini issue.

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Display, click the Desktop tab, and then click Customize Desktop.
3. Select Restore Defaults

Can you do a search for WINLOGON.EXE and list all found?

C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe <--This one is OK. So don't delete any of them, unless we find a location where it shouldn't be.

I had a few firewall popups yesterday that said IEXPLORE.EXE is trying to access the network , so I searched for other copies and there a second one in C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 too.

Those are OK. When you install Windows, it creates C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386. That where all the backup windows files are.

How is your Desktop?

Desktop looks the same, both before and after reboot. O4's still appear in HJT startup. And WINLOGIN.EXE is still trying to access the network. As I said in my original post, I tried doing 2 Windows restrores and both failed. I have thousands of triplicate copies DLL, EXE, SYS, HLP, INI files. Even under control panel, there are 3 copies of almost every item there. I guess that's why there are 3 copies of the destop.ini too.
