the Alphacleaner downloaded automatically. i uninstalled it immediately. then the desktop had this ad on it. i viewed its properties and then deleted the warnhp file associated with it. i then scanned with McAfee and it found the exploit-byteverify virus. i quarrantined and deleted it. now the desktop is pure white…and i thought i found the file for it (warnhp) in doc. and settings and deleted it, but the problem persists. PLEASE help!!!! i will promptly donate $$ after all is remedied because you folks all rule.
sorry i didn't include the scans. below is the result of my panda scan…the hijackthis log isn't here because McAfee virusAlert pops up when i try to open the file…says its a worm virus. ??? Any clue on what I do next???? I love whomever will help me!
Please download HijackThis v1.99.1 from the following link:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

Then, create a folder like: C:\Program Files\HijackThis, or, if you want to keep it on the Desktop, right click an empty area, select New > Folder, name the folder HijackThis, and place the program in it. This program must have a folder of its own!!

Run HijackThis, and click on the Scan button

When the Scan finishes the scan button turns into: Save Log
Click: Save Log
The log opens in Notepad
Click on: Edit > Select All, then click on: Edit > Copy, and Paste the log in your reply

Please do not engage in fixing anything showing up on the log. Just have the program create it, and copy/paste it to this thread.

I will be notified if you post a new log, and will be glad to assist you.

Your dialogue sounds as if you got hit by the SmitFraud malware and its variants.

Please do the following, but you may want to copy of these instructions to NotePad and save the on the Desktop, or print them, since you will not be able to connect to the Internet during most of this procedure.

Please download SmitRem.exe and save the file to the Desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the Desktop.
Do not do anything else for now.

Download AdAware SE from the following link:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
Use Check for Updates Now' option and download the latest reference files
Do not scan yet.

Download Ewido Anti-Malware:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Press: Download Now
In the folder where EWIDO is located, double click the EWIDO Setup file
When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
Follow the prompts and reboot when done.

Now, go to Start > All Programs > Ewido
Select: Security Suite

When the program starts, do an online update for the latest signature files
An Update Successful prompt appears when done
Do not use the scanner yet.

Now, reboot to Safe Mode:
-Restart your computer
-When the machine first starts again, tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with
a Windows XP Advanced Options menu
-Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys
-Press Enter to boot into Safe Mode

Next, open the SmitRem folder
-Double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool.
-Follow the prompts on screen.
The Desktop and icons disappear and then reappear again — this is normal.
Wait for the tool to complete and Disk Cleanup to finish — this may take a while.
When done, the log created by the smitRem tool is located at C:\smitfiles.txt

Run AdAware
-Use the Start button, and on the next window, select: Perform Full System Scan
-Press Next, and let Ad-aware scan the hard drive
-When finished, right-click the window with the entries, choose: Select All from the menu, and click Next.
-Once AdAware has removed the entries, close the program

Run Ewido.
-Click on the Scanner button in the left menu
-Next, click on: Complete System Scan

The scan may find malware entries and request action to clean up. Agree.
However, if Ewido finds something that you know is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged), do not check: Perform action with all infections. If you are unsure of an entry, select None as the action for the time being.

Once the scan has completed, click: Save Report
Save the report to the Ewido folder

Restart the computer normally.

Once again, run a Panda online ActiveScan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

Finally, provide the following in your reply:
The log from the smitRem tool (located at C:\smitfiles.txt)
The Ewido report
The ActiveScan report
A new HijackThis log

Also, go to Start > Control Panel > Display
Go to the Desktop tab,
Click: Customize Desktop
Go to the Web tab
In the Web Pages area, what do you have there?
just so you know…when i ran NoAdaware from your link, it wouldn't remove the items it detected without registering, which wasn't possible since I was in safe mode. So, I ran my AdAware by Lavasoft instead. Let me know if this is an issue or not.
"My Current Home Page" is what i found in the web pages area…it's URL is About:Home
Looking forward to your feedback!!
A thousand thank you's!!

Next, download Killbox:
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip
Place the program in a folder on the Desktop.
Extract Pocket KillBox from the zip file
Run the program

At the main screen of KillBox, select the option: Delete on Reboot
Open the Notepad file saved earlier and copy the files to the clipboard
(Highlight all (Ctrl+A) and Copy (Ctrl + C).

In Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose: Paste from Clipboard
Then select: All Files (button)
Now, press the button with a red circle and a white X (Delete File button)
KillBox will alert you the files will be deleted on next reboot, click Yes
When asked to Reboot, select Yes

Run HijackThis, Scan
Check box for:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…rch/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm

Select: Fix Checked

On the following entry:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = wmplayer.exe

R1 entries relate to for Internet Explorer’s Search functions and other characteristics.
It seems rather odd for wmplayer.exe (Windows Media Player) to be there. There is malware (W32/Agobot-BM) with the same file name.

Use Windows Search (Start > Search > For Files or Folders), to search for each instance of wmplayer.exe in the computer, and submit each instance to one of the following links for a scan:

http://virusscan.jotti.org

If Jotti's Malware scan is busy, you can also use this one

Virus Total:
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

Please post the results so we can determine whether it needs to go. Ewido and Panda are not picking it up, but better be safe than sorry…

When done with all of the above, run another Panda ActiveScan, and post its results along with a new HijackThis log.
okay, i downloaded Adware SE, ran it in safe mode and followed your instructions from the previous post.
then rebooted.
Below are the results from the wmplayer.exe files scanned by jotti virusscan. nothing was detected.
the panda scan showed 9 malware and 2 Hacker/unwanted tools, as the scan below indicates.
also included is the hijackthis log after everything else. What next??
Thank you!!!!

In the next page, download the zip file
Unzip it to the folder created
Start: SilentRunners.vbs

If your antivirus program gives an alert, allow the script to run.
When the scan is done, Notepad opens with a log which is saved in the SilentRunners folder.

Please copy and paste the content of the SilentRunners log in your reply.
I'm actually not having a problem with my desktop any longer. However, I ran Silentrunners just to be on the safe side. the log is below.
I can't thank you enough for all of your help and support! I am so grateful for people like you and the service you provide.
One last question…since the basic antivirus software (ie, McAfee, Norton, etc.) seems almost completely useless…could you recommend a superior security program for me to have and run on my laptop on a regular basis? Are there any that don't cost huge sums of money?
Thanks again…

Nothing in your SilentRunners log looks like malware to me…

In your previous HijackThis log, unless you are responsible for the following entry, recommend its removal. R1 entries are normally not associated with that file:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = wmplayer.exe

Run HijackThis, check box for it, and select Fix Checked.

Also, search for and remove the following files (bold):
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\kyf.dat
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\xmltok.dll

On your question regarding programs to run, there are plenty of them for you to choose.
As far as an AntiVirus program, there are free programs you can download:

Grisoft’s AVG Anti-virus Free Edition: http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php

avast! 4 Home: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

AntiVir Personal Edition: http://www.free-av.com/

For a FireWall:
Zone Alarm has a free version:
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/cata….jsp?lid=nav_za

Here are some other suggestions to remain malware free:
Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=27971
Take a look at what the article has to offer and select the programs that suit your needs.

Also, these are excellent programs that you may want to run on a regular basis:

AdAware SE:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html

Spybot Search and Destroy:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

…and, if you are not having malware problems, you are good to go!

Thank you for your patience, and performing the procedures requested.
If you have any questions or comments, post back. Otherwise…

Good luck!!
i wish i didn't have to post this…but things seemed to be running fine last week. now today it's different. i've downloaded and am using Zone Alarm and Avant for virus protection. Things are so bogged down on my laptop today, that even running AdAwareSE is super slow compared to it's speedy scan. I can no longer print anything from any written program to my local are network printer, and i can't even get a webpage to load. this means i can't even send a new hijackthis log because i'm having to post this from a different computer. Any suggestions? because i can't even do my job here at work with these issues…
Hello, FZWG is not available at present and I will look at your problems to see if I can help. Since all was running OK Mar 1 2006, 09:22 AM, please post a new HJT log so I can see if there is a new problem. We will go from there.

Thanks…pskelley

We need to figure what may have caused this, if the only thing you have done since 3/1 is install those two programs, then uninstall Zone Alarm first and make sure the SP2 Firewall in the Security Center is activated. Post to let me know if that helps.

Look over the suggestions in this link to try. See if any of those help.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/commun…s/IEtopten.mspx

In the event we are deailing with a missing or corrupt system file, follow these instructions to run system file checker:
Click Start>Run, type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things. You will need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.
Let me know if that helps.

Since you have not posted a HJT log in two weeks, and this could surely be a case of an additional infection, I really need to look at a log. If you have to create the log then attach the notepad to an email and send it to the other computer you are using and then post it from there. You can also save the log to a floppy or CD and take that to the other computer to post it,

If you are receiving any error messages please also post them "word for word".

Let me know results of the suggestions

Thanks…Phil
Hi. I don't have my XP disc since it was already installed on my laptop when I bought it…so I'm not sure to follow your instructions yet without that minor detail.
Things are running a little smoother compared to the other day…so here's the latest HJT log file. Perhaps you can find something…
Are you able to determine if there are missing files with this log? otherwise, let me know how to find that out without my XP disc.
thank you!!
