I am having difficulty removing the browsela.dll and alt.exe1 viruses from my system. I have the most recent symantec virus defs and have scanned in Safe mode but no luck. Could someone please view my HJT log and offer advice?

Thank you.

Hello and welcome to TomCoyote forum. You have some nasties and I will show you some information for your benefit:
http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyc…CKSKY.T&VSect=T
http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/trojvixupv.html
and >>> Winlogon Notify browsela X browsela.dll Trojan.Downloader.Delf variant

We must tackle that third one first: Thanks to Marckie for this fix.

this information applies to you:
If the notify key browsela is present, you'll have to reboot the pc manually using the ON/OFF button when the win32delfkil doswindow closes.

Download win32delfkil.exe.
Save it on your desktop.
Double click on win32delfkil.exe and install it. This creates a new folder on your desktop: win32delfkil.
Close all windows, open the win32delfkil folder and double click on fix.bat.
The computer will reboot automatically.
Post the contents of the logfile c\windelf.txt, along with a new HijackThis log.

We will of course have more to do.

Thanks…pskelley

This is not a problem Brian, just keep in mind these infections do seem to attract others, and my suggestion would be to stay offline as much as possible until you are clean and fortified.

This looks to be at least one worm: http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/trojlooskyr.html You need to review that information under all tabs to see how your system and security have been compromised.

1) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

2) Open ewido and choose updates, allow time for it to complete them. Now click on scanner then complete system scan. Allow ewido to delete anything it locates unless you know it is not bad. Save that scan report, I must see it.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\kernels64.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BatSrv] C:\WINDOWS\batserv2.exe
(you may remove that restriction if you wish)
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\batserv2.exe >>> file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\kernels64.exe >>> file

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete the contents (NOT THE FOLDER)
Prefetch info: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_…refetch-XP.html

If you don't have a good cleaner, use this one with these instuctions:
Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp
Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

Restart the computer and post the ewido scan results, a new HJT log and any comments you think I should have.

Thanks…Phil
Thank you so much for the time spent helping me with these issues. Here's my updated stuff. For the most part, everything went smooth other than I didn't see the "C:\Windows\batserv2.exe" and the "C:\Windows\system32\kernels64.exe" files when I went to delete them. I guess that's a good thing though?

Sometimes earlier programs get the stuff. I would rather kill it two or three times than miss it. Let's see what the logs look like:

ewido anti-malware - Scan report Created on: 2:30:38 PM, 2/22/2006
No surprises, really clean scan report, use this information to control those cookies if you wish:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/cookies.htm
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/…acy/config.mspx I'll give you this ewido information now.
ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

We still have issue to contend with here, it is probably TeaTimer blocking the fix, use the instructions in this link to diable TeaTimer and have another go at it, this stuff must be removed.
http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BatSrv] C:\WINDOWS\batserv2.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html
Use these instructions:
MANUAL INSTR FOR ENABLE HIDDEN FILES
* Double-click My Computer.
* Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.
* Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
* Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
* Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:
appears the other one was deleted, understand that HJT is a Process Manager. When you check and remove the item with HJT it stops the process from running and if you navigate to the item you can remove it with being told it is running by Widows. This item is on the computer somewhere, you need to make sure it is properly enabled or search will not find it. It may be in C:\Windows\ these hackers will run from a Temp, TIF or Prefetch folder to keep you from finding the junk. Locate it and delete it then post a new clean HJT log for me and let me know all is well.

C:\WINDOWS\batserv2.exe <<< file that must be deleted

Thanks…Phil
Okay, I followed all the instructions but could not find the file “batserv2.exe” anywhere. I looked in every folder but did not see it. I finally did a search within each file (wow that takes a long time) and found these entries:

And there ya have it. Any other ideas on where I might look? Here is my most recent HJT log. Again thanks so much for your patience.

Also I see a "peoplepc" entry in there…and I know longer use peoplepc. How do I remove this data. It's not listed in any of the remove program lists. Or does it really matter or hurt anything?
OK Brian that item is gone  I thought we were going to have to bring out a cannon. You can use HJT to remove these three lines:
O16 - DPF: {192F9A01-8030-48CE-9BC6-B03DE3E613C6} (PeoplePC Web Installer) - https://www.peoplepc.com/ppcos/ISP60/Download/ppcwebi.cab

That must be the PeoplePC line you see, and the other two will be downloaded fresh if you need them again. Along with a clean HJT log comes: Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

Do you own ewido, if not…ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

System Restore does not know good from bad, it backs up everything. In case some of the infection got into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, restart your computer and turn it back on.
