hi, im having trouble with my pc, all my folders automatically go to read only so i cant move or delete them. i right click on it, get rid of read only then it just goes back straight away. iv done a virus scan and found nothing, can anyone help me? -Nic731
Are you using Win XP (home) or Win XP (Pro)? If you are using one of these systems, and you do not have administrative privileges you may not be able to make changes to the "read-only" attribute of files. Please tell us more about this machine/system, especially about the system it is networked into, if it is. Best Regards
please will someone help me? Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 18:59:38, on 02/03/2006 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) thats the info it tells me to post on the sticky
i dont think it worked, on the site it says "Unlike the Read-only attribute for a file, the Read-only attribute for a folder is typically ignored by Windows, Windows components and accessories, and other programs. For example, you can delete, rename, and change a folder with the Read-only attribute by using Windows Explorer." but i cant delete my read only folders i tried the way around it it said but it didnt work for me it said "parameter formant not correct"
To remove both the Read-only and System attributes from the C:\[folders with your files of interest] For example, the files you are interested in may be in C:\documents and settings\YourUsername\My Documents use (type in) the following from a command prompt: attrib -r -s C:\documents and settings\YourUsername\My Documents (Note be sure to use the spaces between characters) You've been concerned with this problem for a while now, and it must be annoying as well as creating problems for your productivity. I will monitor for any new posts from you and try to assist as much as I am able. Best Regards
In your command prompt, use the script cd/ to get to a clean C:\
example:
C:\Documents and Settings\Nic\>cd/
will take you to …
C:\
now type in the command and address, as follows:
C:\attrib -r -s C:\Documents and Settings\Nic\My Documents

Note: (please observe all the spaces in the command and in the address portion)

Note: (when using command prompt commands, it is important to start clean from the root directory…C:\)
the cd/ thing didnt work do i did cd\ and it worked, but then i got the same message again, screen shot below

oh yeah, i just found something useful by accident which will help me delete the files, it doesnt work 100% of the time but seems to be better than usual. i can delete the files by doing the shift+delete thing (skips the recycle bin and deletes the thing straingt away)
With difficulty deleting files and/or folders, there may be additional problems with your operating system. Will you please run System File Checker Start - Run - sfc /scannow have your XP installation CD handy, since SFC will call for the installation CD if it finds any missing or corrupt files. Let us know how you are progressing.
same thing happened again :( i have to go to sleep now, ill come back tomorrow and see if there is anythign else i can try thanks very much for trying so hard to help, hopefully we will fix it eventually :) EDIT: didnt see your last post, that sfc thing isnt working it goes to the black thing then dissapears
