Crush,

First I want to be sure that you understand that I am not being petty

Of course not, dont even give it a second thought, you reply to me with any questions at anytime and I will do my best to answer then for you. :D

My bad :( I gave you the wrong path to the folders, the ones you stated are correct.

The Administrator Folder has a Local Settings Folder in it that has a Temp folder in it.
The Default User Folder has a Local Settings Folder in it that has a Temp folder in it.
The Local Service Folder has a Local Settings Folder in it that has a Temp folder in it.
The Network Service Folder has a Local Settings Folder in it that has a Temp folder in it.
The Owen Folder has a Local Settings Folder in it that has a Temp folder in it.

It looks like CCleaner cleaned them all out anyway, I just like to go a step further and get them all clean.

Since those folders are in good shape, then just clean out the Prefetch folder, your Temporary Internet Files ( this will slow you down when it gets real full ) and do the System Restore thing to flush out any bad things that we removed. Then defrag your drive and you should be all set to give SP2 a shot.

Ken :D

Ken: With the CC Cleaner issue, when I go to My Computer/ C:Drive/Owen/ Local Settings/ Temp. This Temp folder has about 20 files in it. Should I delete these Temp files? 2-10-06 Crush

Crush, No, you can leave them alone, CCleaner does a good job on getting rid of them, but everytime you start your computer and run a few applications or whatnot, you temp folder will start to build up again. I am just concerned cleaning it out after we fix an infection to make sure that there arent bits and pieces of the infection left hiding somewhere. Although it is a good idea to run CCleaner every week or so to stay on top of the build up. Ken :D

Ken:

I tried installing SP2 two times after my system was cleaned, and it still does the same thing it down loads for about 15 minutes and then an access error pops up and sez SP2 can’t complete installation then it reinstalls SP1 back on the computer. I thought I didn’t have enough hard drive space but I have 36.8mb free space, but SP2 won’t install on my computer.

What software or websites do you recommend to research lists to determine if files or software is good or bad (i.e. malware, or virus)?

The same question for Startup programs and programs running in the background . what websites or software do you use to tell us what to remove from our computers?

Crush,

Somewhere along the line you got reinfected with a Trojan, before we remove it I need you to move HJT to its own folder , we are going to make changes to your system and I want to make sure we have backups of those changes.

DO THIS FIRST
Your HIJACKTHIS program is current, but it is very important that it resides in its own folder.
We will use Hijackthis (HJT) to make changes to your system and HJT will make backups of those changes,
If HJT is not in its own folder, those backups could be lost.

Easy to fix,
* just go to MY COMPUTER > YOUR C:\ DRIVE and create a new folder and name it HIJACKTHIS .
* Now scroll to where you have HJT currently, right click on the HJT icon and select CUT .
* Now open the new folder you just created and right click within that folder and select PASTE .
* Now HJT should reside in C:\HIJACKTHIS\HIJACKTHIS.EXE

I would suggest that you stay off the internet except for posting in this forum until we get you all clean as you seem to be attracting other infections.

Do you use AOL 7 at all, either the service or the messenger???

Ken

I have Hjt in its own folder on C drive now.
I probably got infected because I was on a web site that would not work unless I turned off Zone Alarm. I know I should not have turned it off but I did. before I turned it off I was getting this Erroer message from the website:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your browser did not send the HTTP_REFERER string. Please review your firewall settings. This is important to work for viewing our sites.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I had ZA off for about 1 hr so that is probably how I got zapped.

Below is a new Hjt Log.

Crush,

This service needs to be removed as it is a worm, it could be listed as either Super AOL instant messenger or supermsg

* Go to Start> Run and type in services.msc then press Enter
* Scroll down to Super AOL instant messenger
* Double Click that service to open it.
* Click on Stop Service.
* Then change the Startup Type to Disabled.
* OK your way out of the program.

Open HJT > Misc Tools > Delete an NT Service
* Type in supermsg
* Then click on OK, it will ask you to reboot, do so.

Boot back into Safemode and make sure that windows is still enabled to show all files and folders.

Now Open HJT Scan Only and remove the following entries.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto
O23 - Service: Super AOL instant messenger (supermsg) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\lsass2.exe (file missing)

While in Safemode, look for and delete the following files and folders in Red

C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth
C:\WINDOWS\lsass2.exe

Reboot normally and post a new HJT log please.

Ken:
I had some problems with the last set of instructions.

When I scrolled down and opened "Super AOL instant messenger, it's service status was ... "stopped".
(So I could not click on stop service.
I then changed the Startup Type from Automatic to Disabled.

Next problem was when removing entries from HJT, I did not find,
"023 - Service: Super AOL instant messenger (supermsg) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\lsass2.exe (file missing)"

Next problem was when I tried to delete the PC Health folder I got the following Error.

"Cannot delete pchsvc.dll Acess is denied. make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not in use."

Then the computer froze up when I tried to click OK for this error.

I had to shut down the computer by pushing the button.
I rebooted in safe mode again and I got the same error but I was able to click "OK" but the folder and remaining files in C:\WINDOWS\ PC Health are still on my computer.

I also didn't find a file called " C:\WINDOWS\lsass2.exe.

The computer froze up again.. I did another cold start and a normal reboot, and produced the HJT log below.

I noticed the HJT Line
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto
was still there, but I did delete it with HJT.. I can do it again if you want me to, just let me know and what mode to do it in.

Crush,

The worm is gone :thumbup: , dont worry about the PCHealth entry, it was a glitch in the system, but you still need to fix these 2 items with HJT in Normal mode.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

The rest of your log looks clean, I am wondering if your able to do the windows updates now. If not it may be a windows issue and If so I can direct you to some excellent windows tech support sites that deal with that type of problem.

Ken
I tried to install SP2 Windows update just before making this post, and it failed as usual.
I would be grateful if you could direct me to tech support sites that deal with Windows problems.

Also could you direct me to web sites that I asked you about in previous posts.

I will post those questions again below

What software or websites do you recommend to research lists to determine if files or software is good or bad (i.e. malware, or virus)?

The same question for Startup programs and programs running in the background what websites or software do you use to tell us what to remove from our computers?

Crush,

The tools we use are not for the general public, if you look on your HJT log in the 04 entries, they are starting up when you start your computer, but please dont remove anything on your own, removing the wrong entry can make your computer inoperable. The way to keep a handle on it is to go to each program you have installed on your computer and usually they will have a preference tab and you can change a program to start up or not.

Here is a list of a few malware removal sites, you cant access the tools and tutorials unless you are a staff member but they do have some good reading. Crush, the list of security sites for Networking, Malware, Windows Security and so on is mind boggling, there isnt enough time in the day to list them all.

Bleeping Computer
CastleCops
Pc PitStop <-- Take your computer in for a free checkup
Symantec Security Response <-- Lists the latest viruses and the tools to remove them.

You can go into any major antivirus vendors website and they will have a ton of info.

Here is a site that lists all the Rogue Malware Removal programs, check this site before you are prompted to download a free program.
Rogue Anti Spyware Programs

The best thing to do is to read all the pc magazines, my favorite is pcworld. If anything comes up that you want to know about, just Google it.

Here are some tech support sites to try for the service pack issue, it is real important that you get it resolved.

Tom Coyote
Windows Helpnet
Hardwareguys

You can order the Service Pack 2 CD free from Microsoft.
SP2 CD

Download and install via the link in my signature at the bottom of the page both Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4 and Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06. Here are the setup instructions for both programs. Dont be afraid to install and run these progams, these are all highly recommended by the people in the Malware Removal Comunity.

The one thing that will cause you problems is if you have more than one Anti-Virus program running, all you need is one.

Please use the links in my signature to download and install both of the following free programs.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4

* If you have the older version 1.3, remove it via ADD-REMOVE PROGRAMS in the Control Panel.

Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Add-Remove Programs scroll to that program and click on Remove.

* During Installation, just follow all the defaults.
* Go to Mode and click on Advanced Mode
* Then to Updates Search for Updates
* If you get a Bad Checksum Error, just choose a different download location.
* Then to Settings/ File Sets and take the checkmark out of Usage Tracks
* Then to Tools/ Hosts Files click on Add Spybot S&D Hosts Files.
* Then to Tools/ IE Tweeks and put a checkmark in Lock the Hosts Files
* Then to Immunize. Up at the top by the GREEN SIGN, click on Immunize.
* Then to Search and Destroy/ Check for Problems
* Let it scan your system
* Then to Fix Problems and fix all it finds.

RE-BOOT your computer.

AD-AWARE SE PERSONAL 1.06

If you have an older version of Ad-Aware, no need to uninstall it, it will prompt you to uninstall it during
the set up process

* During installation, follow all the defaults.
* Start the program and Check for Updates
* Choose Perform a Full System Scan
* Take the checkmark out of Search for Negligable Files
* Run the scan
* When it is done, Right Click on One of the Entries/ Select All/ Next and let it remove all that if finds.

Here are some tips and free progams to install that will help keep you more secure.

* Download and Install CCleaner,
* Click on RUN TOOL
* This program is safe to run, but it will delete your cookies, so if there are any you want to keep,
* Go to Options> Cookies and move any you want to keep from the left window to the right window.

* When you run the Issues Scan before you click on Remove Selected Issues, it will ask you to backup the registry, Say Yes.

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Prefetch and remove all the contents of the Prefetch Folder.
But not the Prefetch folder itself.

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
* When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now Empty your Recycle Bin

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* ClickProperties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember

* Make sure that your ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE is up to date and run a full scan at least once aweek.

* Here are Free Anti-Virus Programs if you need one

AVG Free Edition
AntVir Personal Edition

* Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.

* Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

* Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and
give you the option to deny the change.

* IE- Spyad IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains
in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed,
although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

* Firefox Browser
It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use
them both. When it asks you if you want it to be your default browser, say NO and take the checkmark out of the box to ask you again. After you use this
for awhile, you will want to make it your default.

* Thunderbird Mail There companion mail program was highly favored in PCWorld Magazine,
this has a good spam filter and is more secure than Outlook Express.

* Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't
access the internet without it.

* WINDOWS UPDATES - Enable Automatic Updates
Right click on MY COMPUTER/Click on PROPERTIES/ AUTOMATIC UPDATES and put a mark in the radio button
DOWNLOAD UPDATES FOR ME BUT LET ME CHOOSE WHEN TO INSTALL THEM.

* Go to START/ CONTROL PANEL> PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE> REARRANGE ITEMS ON YOUR HARD DISK TO MAKE PROGRAMS RUN FASTER
This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to keep your system running good. The first time you run it, it may take awhile.

Thanks for using Tom Coyote, I wll keep this thread open for a few days in case you have any other questions.

Ken I forgot to tell you about the results I got from Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4 before I ever contacted you. It has references to SP2 in the first line about do not allow, plus a lot of other stuff I don’t understand. When you put a check in the boxes and try to remove this stuff it does not remove it. I thought that after I got cleaned by you guys that this problem would go away but it didn’t Crush Here is the Spybot results Log: --- Report generated: 2006-02-12 22:52 --- Windows Security Center.SP2Update: Settings (Registry change, nothing done) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\DoNotAllowXPSP2!=dword:0 Windows Security Center.AntiVirusOverride: Settings (Registry change, nothing done) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\AntiVirusOverride!=dword:0 Windows Security Center.FirewallOverride: Settings (Registry change, nothing done) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\FirewallOverride!=dword:0 Windows Security Center.FirewallDisableNotify: Settings (Registry change, nothing done) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\FirewallDisableNotify!=dword:0 Windows Security Center.AntiVirusDisableNotify: Settings (Registry change, nothing done) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\AntiVirusDisableNotify!=dword:0 Windows Security Center.UpdateDisableNotify: Settings (Registry change, nothing done) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\UpdatesDisableNotify!=dword:0 --- Spybot - Search & Destroy version: 1.4 (build: 20050523) --- 2005-05-31 blindman.exe (1.0.0.1) 2005-05-31 SpybotSD.exe (1.4.0.3) 2005-05-31 TeaTimer.exe (1.4.0.2) 2005-08-05 unins000.exe (51.41.0.0) 2005-05-31 Update.exe (1.4.0.0) 2005-05-31 advcheck.dll (1.0.2.0) 2005-05-31 aports.dll (2.1.0.0) 2005-05-31 borlndmm.dll (7.0.4.453) 2005-05-31 delphimm.dll (7.0.4.453) 2005-05-31 SDHelper.dll (1.4.0.0) 2005-05-31 Tools.dll (2.0.0.2) 2005-05-31 UnzDll.dll (1.73.1.1) 2005-05-31 ZipDll.dll (1.73.2.0) 2006-02-10 Includes\Cookies.sbi (*) 2006-02-10 Includes\Dialer.sbi (*) 2006-02-10 Includes\Hijackers.sbi (*) 2006-02-10 Includes\Keyloggers.sbi (*) 2004-11-29 Includes\LSP.sbi (*) 2006-02-10 Includes\Malware.sbi (*) 2003-03-16 Includes\plugin-ignore.ini 2006-02-10 Includes\PUPS.sbi (*) 2006-02-10 Includes\Revision.sbi (*) 2006-02-10 Includes\Security.sbi (*) 2006-02-10 Includes\Spybots.sbi (*) 2003-10-29 Includes\Temporary.sbi (*) 2005-02-17 Includes\Tracks.uti 2006-02-10 Includes\Trojans.sbi (*)

Crush,

I checked with the people at Safer Networking , the makers of Spybot and they said that the entry in Spybot is ignored by windows since April 2005 so should have no bearing on the install.

You can read this
http://www.microsoft...whattoknow.mspx

You can order the free CD
http://www.microsoft...us/default.mspx

Do you know if any of your friends have ordered the CD that you can borrow? It says on the website that it takes 4 to 6 weeks but I got mine in 4 or 5 days.

You can call them here for help.
The number in US/Canada is 888-SP2-HELP

Or you can post to the tech support boards that I posted in my last post.

I think what I would do is order the CD, its free and see how it goes, if still no luck than call that number and post to the tech support forums.

Hope this information helps you out.

Ken :D

Ken: You won't believe this one .. you got my computer all clean and nice and then you mentioned an SP2 CD. All of a sudden I remembered that someone gave me a copy of one. I found it, and tried to see if it would work or uninstall like the online Updates were doing, while it was installing I walked away from the computer, and when I came back, the error was there asusual but I was not surprised I had to click ok so SP1 would reinstall, but I wasn't paying attenion enough and I click on the x while SP1 was reloading and that 1 little click in that one little second wiped out my Windows OS and the computer now boots to the bios screen and then shuts off .. so all of the work we did went out the window.. I found a floppy startup disk that was for a Windows 98 computer I used to have and it brought uo the A prompt but I could not get the D prompt to come up to put in the Windows XP disk, and it doesnn't recognize my hard drive. I went on a friends computer and I found a program called BartPE / PE Builder which is supposed to make a boot disk and install your Registered copy of Windows XP SP1 on your computer ... I thought my life was saved but when I tried it an error came up and it said it was missing a file and it warns you that OEM XP software does not work well with this system. O yea I also forgot to tell you during the snow storm on Sunday we had about 20 blackouts and a Thunder storm and my flat panel monitor blew out (yes I have a surge protector) This was just a weird storm .. I just wanted to say that since our last post I lost my whole computer .. I guess I can't win but I want to say thank you very much for all of the time and help you passed my way and I am greatful. My DSL stopped working on this borrowed computer but I got it working at half speed yesterday I haven't been asleep in about 30 hours, but I am not gonna give up. I wanted to know is there a way to e-mail you. I want to say hi to you when I get this debacle rectified.. If not please say a prayer for me.. Crush
